We returned to school after a long bout of summer jobs, summer school or just plain summer. There were the regular yells or horror when we discovered that even more parking spaces had disappeared. There were the regular lines at fee payment and in the Bookstore. And there were the regular rank-and-file students rushing to classrooms they can't find. Of course, no one can find these ordinary. Average Students because, we believe they are a very extinct species in this campus. At the beginning of the Fall semester, the Houstonian staff decided to embark on a nine-month quest: in search of the average student. Typical, average pastime: eating. Another average pastime resting. VI Roasted garbage Stewrt Gurjmitj stiK doesn't look Jtafitn We took a sample of 1000 randomly selected students. Questionnaires were taken, then sent through a computer. After tedious scrutiny and endless hours of study, computations, and graph-making, we concluded that the average student at UH is currently Residing in Podunk Investigations by consulting psychiatrists informed us (in their clinical and professional opinion) that, Average students at the majority of American universities are usually found residing within a population of disturbed people, such as Podunk.” They then suggested that average students, when found, should be pelted with rocks and garbage. Of course, according to Dallas press, UH students live in roach motels, eat at 7-11s or rob them. But who likes Dallas and who caress Do� ig the Neutron Donee. Sloucher 1984-85 promised to be an exciting year with the success of the space shuttle Discovery”, the birth of the second royal baby, and of course, the upcoming presidential election. And we were ready to start another year at the University of Houston. We flocked to Hofheinz for drop and add as we searched for those old familiar faces we hadn't seen all summer. Then we all trudged over to the book store to fight for those all-important books for which we emptied our pockets. We greeted old friends as we walked to our new classes and bravely faced each new professor holding our breath as the teachers told us how many tests and papers were required. We were all trying to be The Average Student The Greeks were dressed to the hilt with the latest Jordache look, others were heavy into the punk movement with their spiked hair, and some of us just wore whatever felt good. Mr UH Beth Allen, Ms. UH We kicked-off homecoming bn a foggy Wednesday in a typically rainy Houston October, but we braved the rain and had a good time celebrating. Cougar Gold We gathered in the UC as the band played, the cheerleaders cheered, and the Cougar Dolls danced. And we all cheered as Beth Allen and Dan Carlisle were presented as Mr. and Ms. UH! Then, we all sprinted to the food fair to taste the delicious dishes before they were all gone. A College Bowl demonstration and a pizza eating contest were the highlights of Thursday's events, and Friday we watched the fabulous downtown parade. We also enjoyed the Sigma Chi chili cook-off and hog roast, and we cheered on our favorite fraternities and sororities as their members pulled each other into a five-foot mud hole. The UC held a crowd as never before to sample the dishes at the International Food Fair We gorged ourselves on everything from Arabian Lahm B'Ageem to fried bananas from El Salvador. The Greek Booth had a dish called Itaetiteio which they claim is The Greek answer to Italy's not-so-good pasta. The booths were even decorated according to the country represented. The Malaysian Students Organization won the first prize for their decorations. And when the bellydancer appeared for our entertainment, the male half of the crowd suddenly became much more enthusiastic. She signed up for Ms. UH because she wanted to feel like a part of the school. She's been a UH cheerleader for two years, and her sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority nominated her. She loves sports and considers cheerleading to be one. The best part of her reign, she said, was riding in the parade and going to the Cotton Bowl as queen. As much as I love UH, I felt like I could do a good job, said Mr. UH, a pre-med student. Carlisle is an SA member, is chairman of the Academic Affairs committee and has served as an officer in several organizations. He became a member of Tri Beta Biology Honor Society in the fall semester. But he said that he loves golf probably more than anything. ib Beth. dor g her 10b. Mr. and Ms. UH On I oat. too? By Friday, the rain cleared, and on a beautiful sunny day, UH had a fabulous Downtown Parade for the first time in thirty years. This year the bands and floats were led down Main St. instead of just riding through campus. And Carl Lewis was our Grand Marshal. It was a big success; even the businessmen took a break and watched our parade through the windows. 21 Ghanaian Dancers Zatar Tahir MCs Darshani Patel performs an Indian dance. lamaican dance by Felicia lake Dancing and splendor graced the Houston Room on Oct. 5 as Saidas Remade hosted International Variety Show Through an evening of dance and song from all over the world, the international students sought to show us that multiplicity is an illusion. This theme was wonderfully displayed with an entourage of dancers from Greece, Palestine, Jamaica and India. And fashions from Pakistan, the Caribbean and the United States were also featured. Renade said that the international students sought to prove with their program that there can be unity amidst adversity . I'd rather have the harmony of peace than the victory of war, he said. Singing with Santa The UH Drama Department began their season with the promiscuous musical comedy, I Love My Wife Set in Trenton, New Jersey, this 1977 play is about two couples who decide to try the latest craze, wife-swapping, only to find that they love their spouses. I In 1984-85 the University Park campus began a great transformation. Construction was begun on two sites and plans were made for even more. New Buildings The new Architecture Building took shape before our eyes next to the Fine Arts Building. One of our precious parking lots near the UC has been readied as a site for a new building for the College of Business and plans have been made for an addition to the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management for which construction should begin sometime in January 1986. Though some parking space was eliminated to make room for the new buildings, a new parking lot should be built in this summer on the corner of Elgin and Cullen. If not, there are going to be a lot of unhappy commuters. As usual. Chi Omega raised the most money, and Camp Cougar received approximately $2,100. The music varied from the 1940's hits to the 1980's top 40, and, of course, they played a full hour of the Jackson's Victory Tour. Let's Party Fall style Hoops are back We re so CQ Most college students share an interest in the latest fashions, so we were delighted when Chiaroscuro, a UH fashion club, performed a Fashion Show in the UC. The Chiaroscuro members donned chic fashions and modeled the clothes for those of us who watched in envy, wishing we could dress in the beautiful clothes ourselves. 1%8 Prewlonlidl Candidate, Eugene McCarthy McCarthy remembers the late '60s November 1984 marked the forthcoming Presidential Election and students needed to be informed; therefore, UPB sponsored a Political Lecture Series The series began Sept. 20 when John Anderson came to UH to warn us that personal image has begun to play a greater part in our political system than the issues. He said that the function of a third political party could bring the nation's attention back to the candidate's mind and away from the camera image. In October, Eugene McCarthy spoke about the history of foreign policy in America since World War II showing that the arms build-up has become an American tradition. He believes that the US should spend more money on defense rather than on weapons. And in November, Alexander Ginzberg, a Soviet dissident who has been exiled from the Soviet Union since 1979, described his struggles for freedom in the Soviet Union and advocated non-violence to achieve human rights. 40 POLITICS Anderson empasi es a pomt Anderson does the Funky Chicken Soviet dissident, Alexander Gmzberg McCarthy talks about his anti-war campaign .Ma. Kyndal May and Mkhai Foster in symbolic pose Stan e mourns Robert Strane as Salieri The Drama Department returned to the stage in November with Peter Shaffer's Amadeus The story of the alleged murderer of the brilliant composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The protaganist. Dr. Salieri, played by a guest artist, Robert Strane, tries his hardest to ruin his rival, but he never quite succeeds. Tor those of you who missed it, the play was just as good as the movie. mnz 0 SONG inverted dancers ooohhah! Isn't he cute. Watch out, Linda Konstadt Displaced in time The company of the musical, traveling show Up With People came to Houston, and while they were here, they stopped by the UH campus and performed a sample of their show. They entertained a large room full of people with lively singing and dancing, and everyone had a good time. 45 In a sea of apathy, a few students remain who Examine the Issues The India Students Organizations lamented the tragic assassination of Indira Ghandi and held a memorial service in her honor. The National Organization for women carried signs which spoke against abortion and took donations for Planned Parenthood. The CISPES, the Committee in Solidarity with People in El Salvador spoke against the United States' involvement in Central America. Or just sit around and talk? Such introspection occurs only when a yearbook editor discovers she forgot to send two pages to the publishing company. She discovers this in the middle of June. And she begins to wonder what she did the whole semester that made her forget to send these pages. Oops. Then she puts her questions down on paper and pretends they're really part of the yearbook after all. This page, therefore, is virtually meaningless. Administration snowed in Mother nature gave us all an unusual Christmas present. We actually had Snow in Houston! There was even enough of the fluffy, white flakes for a quick snowball fight or for the building of a midget snowman before it melted into dirty slush. They entertained Cougar fans during half-time with their basketball acrobatics and showed the Cougars how to really jump. 53 Upside down three. The tradition of academic excellence continued at UH with the third season of the Nobel Prize Winners Series. The first to speak was Nobelist Betty Williams,who won the peace prize for organizing the Community of Peace People, a campaign to end the violence between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. After witnessing the killing of three children in Belfast, she went door to door, gathering a growing group of women, who marched in protest of the killing of innocent people. Sir Arthur Lewis, co-winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in economics, was the second speaker in the series. As an early dissenter from the prevailing view of advancement of underdeveloped nations, Lewis said the key lies in the development of human capital and agriculture rather than dependence of Third World countries upon industrial powers. Paul Berg, father of genetic engineering, spoke on March 18. Berg was the first to construct a DNA molecule, combining parts of DNA from different species; the result was the development of genetic engineering. Are we having fun yet? We marked the beginning of spring with the event of the year as we celebrated Spring Fair. Festivities got off to a roaring start on Wednesday, March 27, with the International Food Fair. Then, we dunked the Greeks, watched fencing demonstrations and danced to the music of band after band in the muddied Lynn Eusan Park. And Thursday we plunged into Cullen Fountain for tube races, administration approved! 58 Put what? Where? While we enjoyed the great cuisine, provided by 27 different international groups, we were entertained with an Indian fashion show, followed by the Chiaroscuro models, who showed us the latest spring styles. And among the featured talents were Becca Dvoretzky, who played guitar and sang Yerushalayim Shel Zahav and Shir La Shalom, and Silaine Sausa, who performed a Brazilian dance. American cuisine. Place vour bets What, I'm supposed to use real money? Approximately 1200 people gather in the UC to gamble away play money, listen to new talent and dance the night away at the 1985 Casino Night. Showboat was its theme and the Magic on the Mississippi entertained the guest. We played the usual casino games: black jack, roulette, and the thrilling mouse races. First prize in the talent contest was won by singing group S-ville. Second prize winner was jazz dancer Kirk Kelly,and third prize went to pianist Adrienne Park. A new attraction was added this year: three magicians entertained. I didn’t take his money. Serious Shuffle (T u m rr r audiences,while others enjoyed the open game room. This time, the Wortham Theatre had full houses in April because the students were presenting three plays by the famous playwright, Edward Albee. If the paper is assigned at the beginning of the semester it's very difficult to wait until the last day before it's due to begin working on it, but that's the secret of success. The intensity may not have shown up at the beginning of the season, but it prevailed at the end. The Lady Coogs lost their own September Classic Tournament, but they won their longest stretch of wins afterwards from September 21, 6 straight wins. Their dedication was tested early in the season when a mild case of mono (mononucleosis) spread around campus. Starplayers had to sit out of a few important games. The team helped cure their ill teammates by playing their very best, against the tough opponents that came up, even though others didn't think that they had a chance without their senior mainstays; sometimes they did have difficulty executing their setting techniques as was the case with the Texas A M Aggies, but they persevered. 76 Women's Volleyball It's mine’ Do I hit it up? That in a word sums up how the University of Houston Bill Voeman and his Cougars felt after the incredible sequence of Flukies and Fluties The Cougars started out their season by pulling away Miami-Ohio 30-17 and winning their first home opener in three years. This was a great way to kick off the season. This great start got upset right away when the Cougars lost a road game against 9 ranked Washington and at-home game against Louisville. Well We could put that bone back in. wrap it up and you won't (eel a thing ... 79 When the Cougars should have been drowning in sorrow, they went to Waco and defied the monsoon conditions on the Big Green Slip 'n Slide and passed Baylor, 13-10 in the second quarter never allowing them to regain their lead. The score ending 27-17. We then stalked our way past Texas A M to the nationally ranked opponent, the SMU Mustangs, who we dropkicked from atop the SWC standings. Mike Clendenen's five fieldgoals and a time-consuming rushing game enabled the Cougars to score a 29-20 victory before a Texas Stadium audience of 28,361. DEFENSE DIG RIGHT IN' 81 Coog defense pms down the Aggies again After surprising Izod U's Polo Ponies We suffered our 1st loss in the Conference against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Four interceptions and three lost fumbles caused the Cougars to drop behind Texas into a 2nd place tie with TCU. Then after a loss to the Horned-frogs of Fort Worth, the Cougars were determined to make up for their mistakes and to even their score with the Longhorns. The Cougar secondary astonished the Longhorn Quarterback into a 5 interception performance without a completion until there were 9 minutes left to play. By then Gerald Landry had thrown scoring passes of 79 yards to Carl Hilton. And Dewayne Bowden raced 62 yards with an intercepted pass for the killing blow of the game. That windy day in Austin led the Cougars to pounce on 9 Horn turnovers. Raymond Tate Worn away the Rice defense (as usual). DECISIONS. DECISIONS Kevin Alexander pounces on a horny (rog Carl Hilton runs the bal lor extra yardage 83 After processing the cows, the Cougars started to gain control of their Bowl Destiny If they could win the rest of their games, they might be able to attend a minor bowl such as the Freedom Bowl. Then it happened, the so-called flukes started: the Cougars combined a 24-17 victory over Texas Tech with a wave of SWC upsets to move within reach of their first Cotton Bowl berth since 1979. The Cougar's win, combined with Baylor's win over Texas, Texas A M's win over the T.C.U. and S.M.U.'s win over Arkansas left the Cougars needing only a win over the Rice Owls to clinch a spot with Doug Flutie and the Eagles in the flutie Bowl. Greg Pur eN and Simon Fletcher tear apart a Miami receiver , . , . . _ Raymond Tate doesn t drag his heels, but he does drag defensive players Larry Shepherd gars good yardage m spite of Miami's attempt to intercept the Iwll The Cougars weren't wrinkle-free in their game against the Rice Owls, but afterwards they were 100% Cotton Raymond Tate's 205 yards and 3 TD's out lasted Rice's mile-a-minute offense 38-26 in the Astrodome as the Cougars clinched their 4th Cotton Bowl berth more than any other team in the Conference since they were admitted in 1976. We finished the season 6-2 in SWC standings and shared the Conference Championship with the S.M.U. Mustangs. 86 While the Mustangs were in Hawaii away, the Cougars went to Dallas to play. Our football players represented the SWC and hosted the Boston College Eagles in the Cotton Bowl They might not have won the bowl game, but they had that element of surprise which won the hearts and respect of Houston and the Southwest Conference! 87 If the UH basketball players are like nobility on campus, the golf team must be God. And his first name is Dave. Coach Dave Williams chalked up his 16th national championship at UH in 1985. So, Houston won, as usual, but this one was the sweetest according to Dave. It's the greatest one ever, Williams said after the tournament. I always wanted sweet 16. Now I've got it. Ining it up 68 looking desperate. 89 ■4 Carlos Espinosa concentrates 90 Golf does 1 again! Tray Tyner. Digging for buried treasure Steve Elkington took top individual honors for the Cougars, finishing 10th in the final ranking. But it was Billie Ray Brown's resurrection in the finals round that boosted Houston to Victory After shooting three sub-standard rounds, including a 77 in the second round, Brown found his game and shot a 70 on the final day. Williams also cited Mark Pendaries' final round performance as keying the win. Swing! It's al in the bag The Cougars, naturally, won the Southwest Conference Championship Elkington led the team all season long. But the SWC tournament, which was held in Austin, was probably his finest hour. He won the individual title with a five-under-par 67 on the final round of the tournament, and sparked the Cougars to a two-stroke victory over Arkansas. 92 Coach Dave Williams . . . displays his team Basketball '85 94 Phi Slama Jama III? This year's Phi Slamma Jamma turned out to be a slight disappointment after the last three years of basketball excitement. Many said that Akeem should not have left, that too much hot-dogging was going on, and that there were too many inexperienced players on the team. Of course, still others said that Houston's too humid, the lines for books are much too long, and that basketball tickets should have been free. Each to his own complaint. Unfortunately, those thousands of individuals cannot fit on this small amount of pages. Therefore, the Houstonian staff had to decide who to put in and who not to put in. It was a terrible decision. We decided against the Board of Regents because we could never get a picture of them. The Chancellors were merely lucky that Media Relations keeps their photos on file. The Deans were hard to track down, but every student should know the face of the man who controls the diplomas. After all, you never know if you might meet your dean in a dark alley or at a steamy night club some night. So the deans go in. As a matter of fact, we were able to con some of them into talking about themselves or their colleges. Really wonderful stuff in that. Also, we chose to put in the people who direct university operations. They, too, are people we need to know on sight. To those we left out, the Houstonian staff can only say this: get an endowed chair, tenure and life sentence with the University of Houston. The communications building finally got a coat of paint Def'nnety not an average student And so the year slowly came to a close. We were gearing up for finals and more school — lucky in the fall, unlucky in the summer. The campus was the same as when we arrived in August 1984. Or was it? A new deli in the U.C. Three new buildings going up. And tuition rising, too. As the year drew to a close, the Houstonian staff discovered that we were no closer to finding the average student than we were last August. We concluded that U of H is Not Average Our students are older than those at other big universities. Very few live on campus — it seems everyone commutes. We're better than other universities. At the University Park we have many trees and many working men. J41 If you find this yearbook on a bookshelf somewhere then the staff of the 1985 Houstonian paid someone to put it together in June after they'd been picking up their checks since October. On the other hand, if you're reading this off the wall of the number two outhouse in eastern Mongolia, then we blew it. Royally. That is what happens when a small amount of people attempt to put a large amount of people on a middling amount of pages. We found ourselves plagued with procrastination, freezing offices and nosy passersby who wanted to know where the hotel lobby was hidden. Indeed, if this book is really in print then start believing in acts of God, the tooth fairy and inexpensive tuition in Texas. • • Michelle Gardner Editor-in-Chief The most depressing day of her life was when Coca-Cola changed their formula. She can usually be found feeding the Daily Cougar staff or her friends the squirrels. When she's not getting a suntan she spends her time translating J.R.R. Tolkien into four different languages, none of which she speaks. She sharpens her fingernails to a point and stores partially eaten honeybuns in the floor of her soon-to-be-ill-fated beige-colored Datsun. When asked about her personality she comments that it has taken years to cultivate. Her goals for 1986 are to personally flip half the peace sign to each and every motorist on 610 South and to teach her pet spider to bark. Dale Hadley Photography and Management Dale was the only member of the staff to graduate. His favorite pastime was annoying Michelle. When he was not doing that he was irritating her. His favorite line was: Well, I guess I'll have to shoot it then. Dale went to Europe. At press time, he had not returned. He told us that he would take a boat instead of flying out of Greece. His favorite full-contact sport is the spelling bee. 344 Michael Douglass Greeks and Business Manager Though he tried, Mike will never be a jack Colter from Romancing the Stone. He hates spiders, believes in gun control, never hits a woman larger than himself, and paints his toenails. He's probably the worst procrastinator on campus, but we won't know for sure until he graduates. He likes to pull the wings off flies and scare small children. He's full of contradictions. He's an arrogant ass, and he admits it. 345 jill was a mysterious individual who always wrote grammar-perfect copy. She's an English major, of course. Whenever she was seen in the office, she would be speaking softly into the telephone. Some suggested she was giving Ronald Reagan pointers for his speeches. That theory was later thrown out when an eavesdropper said she might be talking to a boy friend. She never learned how to spell Tuesday. As far as we could tell she didn't have any vices. Her desk was always clean. Jill Peterson Campus Life Arthur Fields Organizations and Dorms Arthur really wanted to do the sports section. Unfortunately U of H does not offer his favorite sport: basket-weaving time trials. He was one of those people who came into the office only under the cover of darkness. No one ever found out the exact reason for this, but some speculated that he was truly a Planet P Project and could not stand sunlight. We don't even know what kind of car he drives. Or for that matter, if he really exists at all.
