Tradition in an urban environment The common complaint among University of Houston students is the lack of tradition on campus. It's hard to imagine ivory covered walls when Interstate 45 is down the street and the third ward, one of Houston's worst crime areas, is around the corner. What makes tradition at the University of Houston is the feeling of unity among students. The feeling of accomplishment after dancing 25 hours in a dance-a-thon to benefit Camp Cougar's enormous cause. The sense of pride when your basketball team is rated in the top 20 by both major wire service polls. The intensity that throbs in hearts as the track runner dressed in red and white stretches across the winner's ribbon. Tradition in an urban environment is an attitude. Photos: Lovell Banks

UH students growing with university University of Houston students numbered 30,454 strong for the fall semester of 1982 and slightly smaller for the spring semester. The dream of UH founder Hugh Roy Cullen in 1934 to establish a state university is more than just a reality today. Students at the university come from various backgrounds and countries. The present enrollment for international students reached an all time high of 3,777 this year with the majority of students being from South and Hast Asia. Although the majority of students commute to and from school, there are dormitories on campus with a 2,500 student population. Undergraduates at UH range in ages with the majority of students majoring in Mathematics, Natural Science and Business. To classify students as a mass is easy, but to do so individually would be impossible. The University of Houston student is as diversified as the university itself. Lovell Banks
