Tradition in an urban environment The common complaint among University of Houston students is the lack of tradition on campus. It's hard to imagine ivory covered walls when Interstate 45 is down the street and the third ward, one of Houston's worst crime areas, is around the corner. What makes tradition at the University of Houston is the feeling of unity among students. The feeling of accomplishment after dancing 25 hours in a dance-a-thon to benefit Camp Cougar's enormous cause. The sense of pride when your basketball team is rated in the top 20 by both major wire service polls. The intensity that throbs in hearts as the track runner dressed in red and white stretches across the winner's ribbon. Tradition in an urban environment is an attitude. Photos: Lovell Banks

College life is made within a world all its own. We are considered bright, ambitious by the outside world and within the grounds of a university we question why we ever begin such a task. We study, study, study and party, party, party and in between the two, we wonder when we will ever catch up on our sleep. There's something special about being young and in college. Everyone is struggling for the same cause — I've got a test next week over seven chapters, plus a project to turn in. I'll never make it! Everyone likes rock-n-roll — Man, this song is so fine! If it's not rock-n-roll, it's jazz or soul. As long as it's music and loud. Everyone carries around a copy of the Daily Cougar and reads the zany classifieds — ' Wanted one knight in shining armor to catch the heart of a fair maiden last seen on her sleeve. Everyone is ready to give advice on a teacher — He's so easy, I could take his tests blind folded! College life, all graduates say is the best time of your life, so enjoy. It's hard to imagine it but each day something happens that makes us remember it forever. We come in contact with people who will influence our lives, we fall in love with someone who will change our very way of thinking, we feel the joy of accomplishment after hours of studying. We grow to become someone quite different and new. We mature through personal grief and joy. For one brief, shining moment, we grasp life tightly in our closed fists. moment
