It’s physical, the buildings and the campus. It’s classes, books and studying as well as partying and good times. Most importantly it’s people, with various backgrounds, interests and goals. The University of Houston — the individual's college. All photos by Mary McConnell 6 Houstonian Introduction 7 Camp Cougar Photos by: M. Elsa Soto Text by: Chris Amante Life at UH is not only classes, studying and test taking. Every summer for the past nine years the UH Residence Halls have sponsored Camp Cougar in association with the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County. Camp Cougar is a fully chaperoned residential summer camp for mentally retarded citizens which was conceived by the university. We try very hard to get the students involved and to involve as many campus people as we can. Bruce Gurd said. Gurd. director of housing at UHCC. said in the past several university organizations have contributed to Camp Cougar either in time, facilities or fund raising. We couldn't run a really good program if we didn't have everyone's help.” Sometimes it's really a shame,” Gurd said. So many of the students who work to raise money for Camp Cougar don’t really get to see it. They know about it. but they don't know. Not until you get within hugging distance do you know what it’s all about. 8 Houstonian o ALL PHOTOS M. ELSA SOTO Introduction ALL PHOTOS M ELSA SOTO O 12 Houstonian ALL PHOTOS M. ELSA SOTO The original idea for this photo essay was the trees on campus as art. but as I began putting the essay together, an unintended message emerged. Some will see art in the photos here, some will see moodiness and subdued emotion, while others will be bored by the emptiness of the photos. There are few or no people present and even less action. When you look at a photograph, you're seeing the world as a deaf person sees it. Where there is no visual communication, there is nothing. Photos and text by Roxanne Y. The offense was beginning a five-game string of better than 200-yard games. Sophomore quarterback Lionel Wilson and Junior left cornerback Butch LaCroix were spectacular. Wilson, in his first collegiate start became the second quarterback in UH history to rush for 100 yards and pass 114 in the same game. LaCroix picked off two passes, one that set up a touchdown. Two plays following the kickoff UH defensive left tackle DeWayne Calloway forced and recovered a TCU fumble. That led to a 19-yard field goal by Mike Clendenen and left Houston with a 10-3 lead at the half. The first UH drive in the third quarter ended with a Lionel Wilson 12-yard TD run. Houston scored 364 runs. 64 more than the old record, had 315 RBI’s 42 better than the old mark, and smashed 50 home runs, five better than the old record. Several individual records bit the dust as well. If we didn't meet your expectations, we're sorry. We'll try again next year. Dorms 405 Dedication This edition of the HOUSTONIAN is for the students who-attended the University during the 1981-82 school year. However, the book, like the University should be dedicated to the future, to the generations of students to come. May they arrive with high goals, school spirit and enthusiasm, and may they leave not too disillusioned. Shasta Harper (realty) daughter Ol UH student Terry Harper EDITOR'S NOTE: Putting together a yearbook of this size takes a lot of work. Sincere thanks to Jeanette Morgan and Julius Gordon for listening, and to Wayne Scott and Audree Kormorny for supporting me in the end. A personal note, thanks and love to my husband Alan for encouraging me to do this job and putting up with me while I did it. Mary McConnell Editor 406 Houstonian Student Index — A — Aaron.
