Ul! was built on this foundation With only Rice Institute to offer. Houston couldn't provide ;i higher education for all the high school graduates and working persons who were unable or unwilling to leave the city. On June 6.1927, Houston Junior College began classes ■it San Jacinto High School with eight faculty members .mil 230 students. Ranging in age from 16 to 60. the students were offered introductory courses in the arts and sciences. After only three years. Houston Junior College had a 30-member faculty and 858 students. It was the largest junior college in Texas. But Houston still needed more. S on June 9.1934. Houston Junior College became the University of Houston — a four-year institution. The young university had three colleges — the General College, to hold classes at Houston's Second Baptist Church; the College of Arts and Sciences, to continue at San Jacinto High School: and the College of Community Service, to organize classes at any times and places convenient to the students. By 1936, UH was looking for a new home. After the first proposed sight in Memorial Park was rejected, the heirs of the J. J. Settegast Estate and Ben Taub donated 110 acres at the campus' present site. The University purchased two more acres and the new campus was on its way. Optulnt T
