The ’70s came and the enrollment at UH neared 30.000. The campus was offering 17 undergraduate degrees in 78 different fields of study. 21 master's degrees in 46 fields, and 4 doctorates in 24 fields. But the educational needs of the Texas coastal region were still unsatiated, and soon branch campuses were being considered. The first, at Clear Lake City, was opened in 1971. A second campus, in Victoria, began offering classes in 1973. With the acquisition of the downtown property of South Texas Junior College in 1974, yet another campus was established. The combined enrollment of the three branches recently approached 10.000. Early in 1977. the Coordinating Board of the Texas College and University System denied a request for the establishment of a fifth branch campus, at the Woodlands, northwest of I louston. 12 ()|M'nui|i

The '50s found UH with more than 25 buildings. 500 faculty members, and 13,500 students. The first four dormitories were completed, along with the M. D. Anderson Memorial Library and the Ezekiel Cullen Building. KUHT. the country's first educational television station, went on the air in 1953. In 1955. UN was accredited by the Southern Association of College and Secondary Schools. Soon after. UH fraternities and sororities were affiliated with the national Greek organizations. Frontier Fiesta, after more than a decade, was terminated. After a two-year transition period. UH became the 20th member of the Texas System of Higher Education, and began receiving state support in September 1963. Thus began a period of growth that would remain unsurpassed in UH history. With the major construction campaigns of the ’60s. the number of buildings on campus doubled, and UH rose in dollar value from $30 million to almost $125 million. II

The tiny system once housed in San Jacinto High School is broadening not only its physical boundaries, but also its scope of influence. With the increased recognition of its academic programs and the extensive research activities. UH is attracting scores of out-of-state and international students. Approximately 25 per cent of the UH student body is drawn from outside of Texas. This university is making a place for itself amongst the highest institutions in the country. Opntin 13
