Growing The first building, the Roy Gustav Cullen building, opened in 1939. The Science Building opened later in the same year. The Graduate School also opened, and UH was soon offering over 334 courses to its 2737 fulltime students. With the United States’ entrance into World War I. UHers turned their attention to the war. Classes in mapmaking. trigonometry, radio communications and navigation were offered to the students who didn't answer the call to arms. The campus was growing rapidly. It soon engulfed over 260 acres. In 1945. the Texas State legislature created a Board of Regents for UH. with Dr. Edison Oberholtzer UH’s first president. UH began to develop a personality of its own. Frontier Fiesta, which had started in 1940 but ceased during the war, became an annual event, with UH students constructing an entire frontier town. In 1946. UH joined the Lone Star Athletic Conference, and won the basketball championship that same season. Oprains 9

The '50s found UH with more than 25 buildings. 500 faculty members, and 13,500 students. The first four dormitories were completed, along with the M. D. Anderson Memorial Library and the Ezekiel Cullen Building. KUHT. the country's first educational television station, went on the air in 1953. In 1955. UN was accredited by the Southern Association of College and Secondary Schools. Soon after. UH fraternities and sororities were affiliated with the national Greek organizations. Frontier Fiesta, after more than a decade, was terminated. After a two-year transition period. UH became the 20th member of the Texas System of Higher Education, and began receiving state support in September 1963. Thus began a period of growth that would remain unsurpassed in UH history. With the major construction campaigns of the ’60s. the number of buildings on campus doubled, and UH rose in dollar value from $30 million to almost $125 million. II
