Cheerleaders are awarded Mr. and Miss UH in subdued Homecoming ceremonies Above Shasta leads Charles Beasley and the Cougar Guard across the field and on to the sidelines before the game Houston's steadily waning Homecoming spirit seemed to reach a new low in late September when the annual week-long festivities sprang upon a generally unsuspecting and uninterested student body. Involvement was crucial to only a few die-hards — the cheerleaders, alumni, and a handful of homecoming queen candidates who did their best to arouse dormant student interest. Cheerleaders Billy Bishop and Carolyn Redd were awarded watches and the titles of Mr. and Miss UH du'i halftime ceremonies at the UH-SK game, thus ending a tradition of p enting roses to the winning qu candidate. The contest then endel a disappointing 26-16 loss for UH. t second of the season and a sigr Houston football fans that the wo was yet to come. Lagging involvement dampens pre-Homecoming spirit Homecoming week It takes the unusual to lure students out of their routine disinterest for participation in Homecoming festivities. Planning committees tried to spur involvement in a banner making contest but nixed the traditional float decorating one. Turnout was heavy again for the Homecoming rope pull in Lynn Eusan Park and the Gamma Sigma Sigma-staged Frosting Frolics. KLOL disc jockeys held their own in a tug with a McDonald's team but Sigma Chi Fraternity came out of the mud as number one. At the Frolics. Marvin Zindler called the shots in the cake decorating battle between several Houston football greats. Winding up the week and leading into game day. cheerleaders organized a bonfire and follow-up street dance in front of the UC. UH exes sign in for a roster of alumni functions taking place Homecoming weekend
