President NEW PRESIDENT IS INAUGURATED On April 27, 1962, as visiting educators, University of Houston faculty members, students, friends and family watched. Philip Guthrie Hoffman was inaugurated as the sixth president of the University of Houston. Prior to coming to the University in 1957 as vice-president and dean of faculties, the new president was dean of the general extension division of the Oregon State System of Higher Education, and later dean of faculties and professor of history at Portland State College. Portland, Oregon. After receiving his bachelor's degree from Pacific Union College and his master's degree from the University of Southern California, Dr. Hoffman entered the navy at the beginning of World War II as a naval intelligence officer. Following the war he returned to Ohio State University, where he received his doctorate in history in 1918. DR. PHILIP G. HOFFMAN CONGRATULATIONS arc ex-tended to the new president by the University's chancellor emeritus, General A. D. Bruce. 10

Vice-Presidents TREASURER HAS IMPORTANT JOB As senior vice-president and treasurer of the University, C. F. McElhinney’s responsibilities are of great magnitude and importance, particularly in the transition of the University from a private institution to a part of the state system. Born in Nova Scotia, Mr. Mc-Elhinney received his B.A. degree from Arcadia University and his M.A. degree in education administration from Columbia University. Mr. McElhinney was appointed business manager in 1945. In 1950 he was named vice-president and was acting president during 1953-1954. C. F. McELHINNEY VP IS HEAD OF DEVELOPMENT Aside from his responsibilities as vice-president in charge of University Development. Dr. Patrick J. Nicholson also serves as chairman of the Student Publications Committee. Dr. Nicholson has previously acted in the capacities of lecturer in management. executive director of development and assistant to the president. A Ph.D. was conferred on Dr. Nicholson by the University of Houston in 1959. A native Houstonian, he also holds a B.A. degree from Rice and a M.B.A. degree from Harvard. He has served with the army and is currently a major assigned to the Office of Chief of Information. The Pentagon, as mobilization designee. 12 DR. PATRICK J. NICHOLSON
