Dedication Contents A well-known figure lo the people of Houston is the able representative of the University of Houston. General A. D. Bruce. A chancellor. General Bruce is the titular head of the University. Since Ik joined the University in 1951, he has served the institution well in many ways. Probably General Bruce’s greatest single recent contribution to the University, its students and its future is his labor on the proposal for making the University of Houston a full state tax-supported institution. In special appreciation of this outstanding work we feel it fitting to dedicate this I960 HOUSTONIAN to a man dedicated to the cause of furthering the University ... an able chancellor, a fine man and an ambassador extraordinary . . . THE 1960 HOUSTONIAN Foreword HOUSTON CITY LIMIT University °f Houston THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON . . . well into its twenty-sixth year as a full-fledged University, was founded for the purpose of giving citizens of the Houston area an opportunity to continue their education beyond the high school level. Like the city of Houston, the University is young in comparison to other institutions of its kind. But its dynamic, progressive attitude has commanded the respect of cognizant on-lookers. Since its beginning in 1929 as a junior college, 25,062 persons have received degrees and certificates from the University of Houston. The majority of these graduates have settled in the Houston area adding to the city's wealth physically, materially and culturally. Now, at the beginning of the Golden ’60's, the University reflects the spirit of Houston, its struggles for recognition in the past, its vitality and drive of today and its hopes for the future. Ponder, if you will, this thought as you scan the pages of this tribute to Houston: Is it any wonder that the University of Houston has been titled 3 HOUSTON’S OWN UNIVERSITY?
