special acknowledgment Recognition of a man behind the scenes is rare. N. 5. Patterson, retiring Director of the School of Journalism and Graphic Arts, deserves this distinction. The Houstonian Staff knows him best as sponsor of the Houstonian since the early 1940:: Under his direction, the yearbook has expanded rapidly to keep pace with the mushroom growth of the University. Since becoming Director of Public Relations in 1940, Mr. Patterson, unceremoniously, has played an important role in this growth. In 1948, while under the directorship of Mr. Patterson, the School of J ournalism and Graphic Arts received a complete printing plant. R. E. tBobi Smith, Houston oil man and civic leader, gave the equipment necessary to insure the steady growth of the School of Journalism. It was in the hope that progress in Houston area journalism could he furthered that Mr. Patterson worked so diligently on this philanthropic project. Mr. Patterson left the position of,Public Relations Director to become head of the School of Journalism and Graphic Arts in 1950. Scores of graduates from the school now employed by local and community publications is testimony to its success. Campus chapters of leading journalism and photojournalism fraternities are represent- ed nationally. Under Patterson,s guidance the school has one of the largest enrollments in the Southwest, and rates as one of the top journalism schools in the country. The Cougar, campus newspaper, has been nurtured by him into a major publication with high national prestige. This year Mr. Patterson was president of the Southwestern Journalism Congress and hosted representatives from journalism schools throughout the Southwest. In the summer of 1953, Mr. Patterson resigned his position at the University of Houston to enter private business as a public relations and publications counselor. Knowing him as we do, we have made no attempt to formulate an encomium. Therefore, recognizing his fourteen years of service to the University and his contributions to campus publications-the Houstonian Staff wishes him well in his new venture and records this special token of gratitude and sincere appreciation.
