Since becoming Athletic Director in 1945, Mr. Fouke has pursued relentlessly one goal ea progressive athletic program for the University. Present national recognition in many fields testifies to the affable directofs success. Dur- ing eight years under Harry Fouke, University athletic teams have climbed from their first inter-collegiate competition to participation in widespread national meets. His department hears the scars of a Megiddo. Conscientious academicians who opposed general sports emphasis were convinced, that under Mr. Fouke, leadership would be sub- stituted for dominance. Foukeis eternal optimism seeped through the thick skin of alumni lethargy. Student apa- thy changed to progressive fervor as big 3an teams were scheduled. Coaches and universities across the nation heard about iiBig Red,i for the first time as Harry Fouke traveled, talked, explained, and in every way espoused the potential greatness of the Universityis athletic program. The competent coaching and administration staffs of the department under his guidance have realized this goal. Before coming to the University Mr. Fouke coached at San Antonio Tech and Thomas Jefferson high schools. He left coaching to become Athletic Director for the San Antonio public schools-Iater he assumed the same duties in Houston. From this position he joined the University of Houston. At Rice Institute he lettered in football and basketball, and won the coveted Bob Quin award for athletic and scholastic accomplishments. Thus, in realization of his past achievements and confident in his future contribution to University progress, the Houstonian staff dedicates this record of the past yearis activity to Harry H. Fouke, University of Houston Athletic Director.
