In 1950, the man who had founded the University of Houston and had played a large role in its progress through the years stepped down and turned the administration over to his successor. In the June 4- graduation exercises, of this year which marked the 25th anniversary of the institution, that successor, President W. W. Kemmerer, paid tribute to the University,s first president, a tribute whose sentiment will be expressed over and over as long as the University of Houston exists. Already a large and beautiful campus building, the central unit in the modern dormi- tory group, has been named to honor this man. It seemed appropriate to the staff of this Eighteenth Volume of the Houstonian that this 25th anniversary issue, stressing as it does the variety of educational offerings of the University should be dedicated to President Emeritus Edison Ellsworth Oberholtzer. For his influence has touched every phase of the University,s growth and progress through these 25 years. In 1927, Dr. Obcrholtzer persuaded the public school board to establish the Houston Junior College to serve Houston high school graduates who did not wish to leave Houston for an education. In 1934, he again led the way to establishment of the University of Houston, an institution dedicated to Houston and to Houstonians ambitious to get an education even while making all or part of their living expenses. Later, he led the way, joined by Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Cullen and others, in a drive which resulted in the move to a separate campus in 1939. In 1945, he came to the campus as first full-time presi- dent. To Dr. Oberholtzer's vision in seeing the need of an institution for Houstonians and in guiding its destiny through the difficult years of depression and the challenging ones of great expansion, the University of Houston and its friends, students, and ex-students owe an undying debt of gratitude. The Houstonian is proud to re-state and resaffirm that gratitude and love to the Universityis founder and first president.
