French during his long tenure at the U niversity, these ' words best describe the man whose death on January 18 brought . stillness to theecampus. ' To those who had known him well, the news at first seemed upbelievable. Few had known that the Marine veteran of two World Warshad for years carried on a fight against death that ewtbould have maintained.
