Man of the year is J. E. XViniamson, student activities director. to whom the 1946 Houstonian is dedicated. By good will and hy practical example. Mr. VViHiamson has demonstrated that the manifold student activity program of the University can he a vital force in shaping student Character. Mr. Williamson accepted the position of activities director in 1944. Since then he has been the guiding light of student activity at a crucial point in campus history F. a moment when the campus assumed its place as the second largest in Texas. HPractical education means the ability to work congeniany with and for people, Mr. XViniamson says. HI feel that my job as a student activities director should he that of a guide and not a dictator, he smiles. In addition to being a student activities director. Mr. hViHiamson is an assistant professor of mathematics at the University. Always with a friendly smite, always ready to help each student, Mr. Williamson is a living example of good will. The student body owes him a debt of gratitude, and the Houstonian staff attempts in a smaH way to pay that debt with this dedication. EMiLALVIN HARTMAN L'PECTCF - REGENT7 023l-2 Miss June Williams, Editor The Houstonian, University of Houston Houston, Texas Dear H133 Williams: Although it was a difficult task, I was pleased to have the opportunity of choosing the ten Vanity Fair girls whom I considered to be thy most attractive for the year 1946, from the photo- graphs submitted. I say that it was a difficult 'task because all of the contestants were lovely and very often much of the individual'a beauty of coloring is lost in black and white photography. However, those that I did choose seemed unusually photogenic. a In tho case of the University of Houston, it seems that beauty and brains do go together. All of tho young women whose photographs I looked at were representative of modern American womanhood - healthy, wholeaone, and naturally lovely. They all reflected intelligence as well as a knowledge of .good grooming and understanding of how to lake the most of their attributaa. My congratulations and beat wishaa to tho winners and to all who cplpatod 1n the contest. With kind regards. K r 1r! . ctor EAnzhh . ?ISEION AGAIEI! N LOOKING through this yearbook one seldom realizes the count, less hours, even days, of work and planning done by the editors to produce an outstanding annual. The editors' supervision includes every- thing from the first idea of CI theme through the innumerable details involved in ctrt work, layouts, photographs, copyl engravings and print- ing. In normal times their responsibility has been great. In wor-time, problems have arisen which made their task almost insurmountable. Our greatest interest has beenvto work in the spirit of cooperation, relieving the editors, wherever possible, of some of their work and worry. With the shortage of materials and manpower the task has not always been easy and delay has been inevitable. It is our hope, however, that our organization of experienced craftsmen has succeeded along with your editors, in turning out CI book that you will find both attractive and entertaining. 75? 72? 75? it?
