AS THE early pioneer blazed trails through the trackless wilderness, so we today are blazing trails. Ours is a diffi- cult task. We seek the elusive paths of learning that lead to culture, education and a better understanding of life. As those early pioneers established their homes in the wild- erness we, today, are helping to establish a great university. We may consider it a privilege to have some small share in the formation of a university that shall sometime become a mighty institution. We look with pride-I saywn the work already done, the foundation, laid on comradeship, cooperation and scholarship. We take pride in the honor our institution has won in Texas education. 247252 726 SMOOZ . . . ttHow shall she know the worship we would do her? The walls are high and she is very far. How shall the women,s message reach unto her Above the tumult of the packed bazaar? Free wind of March, against the lattice blowing, Bear thou our thanks, lest she depart unknowing? eRudyard Kipling. EQE TA? Purpose of this volume is quite serenely clear. We offer it to you, dear student, without remorse or fear-a scrapbook full of pictures, a memory book for you to keep among your souvenirs of what we students do. The classroom work may be forgot through many coming years, but what youEll most remember was the laughter mixed with tears that came when classes end- ed and the group Was on the run. We offer you this record book of jokes and sports and fun. wedz'mlz'mz . . . In a spirit of wonder and humil- ity, looking back with thankful- ness t0 the past decade of struggle for collegiate recognition, and with pride at the state recognized university of today, we look for- ward with hope into the future when our beloved institution shall become truly great, and hereby dedicate this Annual t0 the Spifit of the future Great University of Houston. dezmkfmfzbiz . . . q have eaten your hrcad and salt, I hzu'c drunk your water and winc, The deaths yc dicd I have watched beside, And the lives that ye lcd were mine. HAILED today as the fastest growing division of the University of Houston, the General Col- lege has shown great progress. The first classes Were held in Spetember, 1934. in the Educational Building of the Second Baptist Church. In 193 5 classes were moved to the South Main Baptist Church. Dr. W. W. Kemmerer is the director, as sisted by Mr. Murray A. Miller. Introducing a new type of education, the work of the General College is grouped into four divi- sions, including in their scope the major branches of human knowledge. These divisions are desig- nated as follows: the Social Sciences, the Biologi- cal Sciences, the Physical Sciences, and Language and Fine Arts. The purpose of the broad divisions is to bring together in their true place the natural- ly related but academically dissociated studies that compose the usual college curriculum. The Faculty of the General College is compos- ed partly of professors who have classes in both the day and night branches of the University and partly of full time General College professors. This annual pays tribute to those professors and students who Were pioneers in this new field of education. PIONEERS! Next affair of import was the Christmas Open House given at the home of Mlss Jane Jennings, president of the club. The annual ttGridironh banquet given at the Mexico City Restaurant gave members ample opportunity to roast each other. Miss Grace Dustin acted as toastmaster. Senior graduates of the Collegians were honored at a banquet given for them by the club in May. The Music Study Club has provided a source of universal appeal that has never yet been equaled in the Day School. Meetings are held once a week. Following the business session a musical program is given. The programs are presented to the students in an inter- esting fashion. ' Organized in 1934. by Mrs. Edith Lord Stafford the club rapidly gained in numbers and popularity. The purpose of the club is to present music to students in as painless a manner as possible. The General College Glee Club, Instrumental Ensemble, and the Lyre, weekly paper, were subsidiaries of the Music Study Club. Of these only the Glee Club is active at present. Great things are destined to be done by the club. We Sincerely hope the interest never wanes. More pOWer, MUSiC Study Club, wehte counting on you. Stage quIIuger 6WD RED MASQ UE PLAYERS IN striving for dramatic achievement the Red Masque Players have bed come one of the most active organizations in the school. XVith a membership second to none the club has presented a variety of shows that has pro- vided a source of entertainment for its audiences as well as being an outlet for the dramatic tendencies among its members. The schedule for the year included two three-act shows and four one-act plays. nHay Fever? an ultra-modern comedy, was the first show of the year. The play portrays the mad actions of the Bliss family during :1 week-cnd. All four members of the family invited guests and each neglected to tell the others until too late. Finally the guests, completely overcome by the nonsensical antics of the family, quietly pack and sneak away. TtCock Robin, gave the club a taste of melo-drama. Finally after a long siege of questioning he is discovered to be the murderer. But his reason for killing Robinson was so evident that the cast agrees to shield him. The part of the director was played by Robert W. Talley, assistant director of the club. In seeking for a play to enter in the Texas Inter-Collegiate One-Act Play Contest, four one-act ShOWS were cast. ttSparkingf a comedy dealing With the romance of a thired handf; ttThe Monkeys Paw? a tragedy in which the dead son is almost brought to life; the Obstinate Family? a farce showing the results of a silly argument; and ttThe River, a tragedy de- picting life on the Mississippi during a flood. Of these four playS, ttThe River by Carl Lowe Springer Was chosen to represent the University in the tournament. The play placed fourth in the Inter-Collegiate Contest With twu members of the cast winning individual honors. .For the creditable showing for the year, let credit be given to L. Standlee Mitchell, who through his knowledge of drama has guided the Red Masque ?layers through a Very successful year; to Robert W. Talley for his as- swtance in direction as Well as for his knowledge in settings; and to Carl Lieb for his help in the construction of the settings in his capacity as stage manager. NATIONAL COLLEGIATE DRAMATIC SOCIETY 7i';-;i,.ig.-Ehuum OFFICERS OF THE COLLEGIATE DRAMATIC SOCIETY ALGERINE ALLEN Gram! Director HOGA WALTER W'arlhy BuIiIlBJ'! Manager W I HE Collegiate Dramatic Society, an outgrowth of the Red Masque Players, is composed of'members who are ex- perienced in all phases of drama. This organization has pledged itself to the expansion and continuance of drama in the University. Drama that will not only be entertain- ing but also helpful to its members. Ranked high among dramatic organizations the club has attained this distinction not so much through the number of members as through the type of members. Students of this organization are well versed in their particular phase of drama, whether it be on or behind the Stage. Each is an expert in his or her field. But shown in particular is their love for the stage and the willingness to do their parts. The group presented tlApron String? as its yearly play. The story concerns a young man who has been tied to motheiJs apron strings all his life. Even after her death her influence is so great that he does what she would have wanted him to do, even when he marries. The bride soon leaves him. This startles him and he de- cides to live his own life. Love triumphs in the end. MAYIS ANDERSON W orrlzy Stage Manager Algerine Allen Maris Anderson Al Aron Douglas 13.. The club is a great improvement over preceding vocal organizations. Appearing on numerous programs and shows the Singers have clearly demonstrated the progress they made. A Christmas Musical given in the auditorium was the first program presented. Following this the club aesisted the Public Speaking Department in presenting a series of radio programs. The Singers had the feature spot in the annual High School Reception held at the City Aud- itorium. For their last appearance of the year the Singers rendered several numbers at the Commencement Exer- cises held at Miller Memorial Amphitheatre.
