OTTJE HOUSTONIAN 01936 PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON LIBRARY umvgnelIY of HOUSTON JAMES L. JULIAN r EDITOR .1. WILBUR SMITH M ANAGliR ROBERT W. TALLEY SPONSOR 12746 THE SCHOOL Through these portalswe pass daily to our classes. It is there that life-long friendships are being made; it is within this building that we laugh at the humorous incidents that occur, and wipe a misty eye when a touchiof pathos tugs at our heart. Within these walls our lives are being reshaped, stronger characters being built, and helpful bits of knowledge imparted. The contacts and associations that we have had here probably have made indelible impressions upon our minds. May we all, in reCalling memories of the past, remember and cherish this school always. FOREWORD The staff, in offering this 1936 Houstonian, has endeavored to create a permanent record of the past school year with emphasis placed on a realistic presentation of the events as they actually 0c- Curred. We have attempted to make this book a human document that gives recognition to the efforts of those who have sought to make better our University. We offer, then, this annual as a means of recording golden mem- ories of those events that we have learned to hold dear and treasure. These include the uget-together at Put Foley's home, the URound-up at McGregor Park, the HCake- Dance in the fall, the Class Night Banquet zlt Lidds, and the breakfast at Le Blanc's in the spring. Class meetings were frequent and harmonious throughout the year. The genial president Pat Foley led the class successfully through difhcult sessions when class rings, invitations and other business had to be decided. The class spirit was high and dues were cheerfully paid, this putting the class on a solid financial basis. The class drafted Mr. Holt, who had served as their junior class sponsor, to advise them. Members of tthunior Class proved continually during the year their willingness to work for the betterment of the school. Class representatives took leading parts in all school activities of literary, athletic, dramatic, musical and social endeavors. uFor the good of the University was their motto. Tthunior Prom, presented April 7.4 at Bcuchmont, was an outstanding social event of thc scholastic year and will long be remembered as a triumph for the class. The Junior Class hopes for even greater success during the ensuing year of 1937. It is to be trusted that this great class has proved worthy of a deserving place of leadership in the greater University of Houston. J. WILBUR SMITH MANAGER The staff was very fortunate in having one so capable as Wilbur t0 handle the business affairs of the Houstonian. The orderly and systematic methods that he followed were a true indication of the efficient and competent business man that he is. He has set up methods of management that should be adopted as permanent. DOUGLAS E. CARTER ASSISTANT EDITOR Carter will assume the editorship of next year's annual with two valuable years of experience to aid him. When the student body voted to entrust this important ofhce to him they did so with the understanding that one of the most dependable and capable stu- dents in the school was their choice. DOROTHY CELY ASSISTANT MANAGER Serving in this position for her second year Dorothy has gathered valuable experience that will allow her to take over the business manager's position well prepared in 1937. She has won the repu- tation of undertaking any assignment with willingness, and has been given the task of completing many of the detailed duties that arose during the year. ROBERT W. TALLEY ADVISER Armed with an intimate knowlege of the publication held, Talley was always on hand to offer the stallr the benefits of his valuable experience. Due to the fact that the original plan of the book had to be changed several times, there were many instances when the staff needed both careful supervision and inspiring pep talks. The adviser always willingly subscribed his assistance. Much praise is due the staff of thirty members that worked faithfully and tirelessly in living up to the journalistic traditions of always making the dead- line with their paper. PEARL MARVEL MARTIN Director The University Singers is an organization composed of students who wish to ex- press their vocal talent in the work offered by the organization. The Club meets for a two hour period every Saturday afternoon, during which time they sing the numbers most popular with College Glee Clubs. This club not only affords a means of musical recreation for its members, but also advertises the University in a most favorable manner. The first program given by the club was a Christmas radio broadcast, which was repeated in an assembly meeting of the student body preceding the Christmas Holidays. During the spring term the club sang a group of numbers from the Musical Comedy, Tune In, at the Annual High School Reception held at the City Auditorium. This group also sang at the Founder's Day program and at the Commencement Exercises which were held at the Miller Memorial Amphitheatre. Mrs, Pearl Marvel Martin, the director of this group is well pleased with the prog- ress made and since most of the members will be back, she is looking forward to a very successful season next year. By staging four 3-act shows this year, the club made it possible for the muiority of its members to take part in at least one production. The first of the four three-act shows of the year was a comedy, T'Are You A Mu- son? The members taking part in this production were Dorothy Golden, P. S. Reed, Ellen Schuhmann, James Julian, Lois Fuller, Vivien Kroll, Dan Makeig, Robert Goodson, Iola Barron, Margaret Ames, Kitty Berthold, A1 Gardner, Stillman Taylor, and jack Robinson. The Howling Dog, a mystery drama, was the second show of the season. The cast for this production included, Mavis Anderson, Betty Martin, Ruie Lawrence, Edythe Reddick, Sally Powers, Barbara Phelan, Milton Caplan, Fred H. The Club was host to the Texas Intercollegiate One-Act Play Tournament which was held here during the week of April 6. Fourteen schools sent representatives to the meet. The manner in which the visitors were received won much goodwill for the University. L. Standlee Mitchell worked faithfully and tirelessly with his casts all year. He was assisted by Robert W. Talley. This left Mitchell free to devote his full energies to the supervision of the dramatic and technical phase of producing as Talley managed the planning and building of the sets. The effectiveness with which this combination worked allowed a new high mark to be reached in the quality of shows produced. At the close of the year the club extended a vote of thanks to J. Wilbur Smith for the work he contributed in making the season a success, and to AI Aron, stage-man- ager, for the part he played in assisting Smith.
