...- L'NlVERSI'I'Y HIGH SCHOOL Registration clav at l'nivc-rsitv High introduces ns to Mr. Stout who is a bottomless pit of inlormaticm about the courses we plan to take at U-High, or don't know we have to take, or mav find out we want to take, after a little talk with him. In the lront ollicse we meet tl1e reception ccmnnittee in the form of little Miss Grim whose accomplishments in the was of advisor in clilllicsultv, guardian of the prinfipal's time. and hancler'outer ol tarclv slips, are all out of proportion to the sile old her. Iftom Dean Packer on down through the newest student teacher, we think we have the linest kind ol administration. faculty. and supervisors. ,Ns the school is uncler the llniversitv llklllllllllflll ol Edu' cation. Dean Packer heads the list ol able 1nen. lh. Newburn directs the sc'hool's general policy and ac- tivitv and Principal Stout comes in handv to carrv on the clav alter clav program. Nllss lsellv hlls the llllllfblllllll position as secretary to lit. Nc-wburn. Since we have a lacultv ol' thirtv-live members in q,y-dw i proportion to a student body of two hundred and lortv-onc-, our instruction is more thorou fll and bet- . A ter supervised than that ol most scihools. However, do not think that because of the large number ol lacultv members, that we are l0cJ restriftecl. He have a verv pleasant form of student government, and so at the same time we are taught, we feel that the teachers are working with us. Our students are selected by passing entrance ex- aminations, and the number admitted is limited to two sections per grade with about twenty-five pupils in each section. This makes our school fairlv small. However, we do not consiclc-r this a handicap, on the contrary. we consicler it as an advantage. XVe are given a chance for personal contact with other stu- dents. and we do get to know our teachers. and be liriencls with them. rather than just being another one run through the mill. ll'e have a predomi- nance ol' men teachers on the liacultv, who have been selected on thc- basis ol' their abilitv. study and instruction. we have some student teach- ers in each class. 'Ihey work in close cooperation with the lac ulty heads. we rrriglrt say as sort ol as- sistants. 'lhey are given charge ol the class lor a unit ol the course and they' bring to it yariety and interest. However. at all tirrres the sltltlelll teacher is superyised by the regular instructor. hom whom he learns rnuch about methocls ol teaching. 'l'he long sullering stooges learn much lilrcrtll young .-Xmerica in their work atrcl we appreciate the pa- tience and personal atterrtiorr that they giye our problerrrs. 'lille rrurrrerons tests that we take tnrder their instrttctiorr help tlrerrr to chart their work rrrore thoroughly' and also helps lls to see where we need inrproy'ernent. Ne have a yery clenrocratrc group. lor both Slll- clents lrom the country and stuclerrts lronr town at- tencl here. llrere is a wide yariety ol interest and euriosities, all ol which we try to siilisly. By the tirrre that we are tlrrottglr l'-High we slronld be expert at taking airy kirrcl ol a test that we rrriglrt trreet in the uniy'ersity', lor we are giyen experience in both objective. essay. and standarclilecl types ol examinations. Our instructors leel that we should be able to meet any type ol' lest with equal conli- clence. ln laet, we get so ttsecl to taking tests that we can alrrrost take tlrerrr in otrr sleep. l'he ollice knows what we do best, where we lit in here and there, and they could almost pack us oll to any college in the country and guarantee satislaction without our knowing where we were headed, XX'e clon't need to worry' abotlt ciualilications lor entrance in any institution ol learning higher than high school. lor the achninistration is carelul to see that we meet all the sllttltlztttls. Nothing recruited in any' nniyersity lor entrance is allowed to slip hy' us, atrd we are thanklnl lor this. ltr spite ol the lact that the personnel ol our laculty changes occasionally, as cloes that ol any school. we are always certain that the quality ol instruction does not change. Our teachers are in clemancl tor better positions. natu- rally. and while we are sorry to see tlrerrr leave, we are sure ol making interesting and lresh contacts with those who take their places. Our connection with the College ol liclrtcation keeps our curricttlurrr in close cooperation with trniyersity methocls, and it is eytrerrrely easy lor our graduates to make the change lrom high school to the urriy'ersity'. 'lhe junior high activities lollow about the satire pattern as those ol last three grades. XVe have our owrr chorus. honor society. ball teams. rrrttsical groups. atrcl parties. llrey do giye tts a taste ol the serrior high social program by letting Us corrre to three mixers cluring the year. only to have Us leaye at ten o'c'loc k. Xy'e hayen't cruite ligrrrecl out whether tlrrs rs to rrrake the senior hrghers leel more tm- portarrt or to keep tts in our place a while longer, but we enjoy it anyway and look lorwarcl to the tirrre when we can stay 'till they play Horne Sweet Home. lfronr the earliest gracles in elementary school to take part in the direction ot' our library activities and pupil conduct ciommittees, it is just a short step to participation in the student eouncil. This grottp assumes a great portion of the responsibility lor the year-'s program. lhese actiyities are our own and by planning tlrerrr oursely'es we can learn to appreciate the dilliculties in rtnrrring our school.
