FOOTBALL This year only three ol L'-High's lettermen, in- cluding Captain lioh Bender returned. liut we had Iorgotten ahout Coach lirechler, who was beginning his third year at the river school. HC pleased everyone hy putting a leillll on the Iield that won lout games and lost three. XVe lost the lirst game with Richland, hut we worked very hard and came hack to defeat 'lieachers' College High ol Cedar Falls. lhen the teatn met two stinging cleleats at the hands ol IVest Liherty' and Monticello. 'l'hese defeats lelt us with the opinion that perhaps we did not have too good a teatn at that. However, our ahle coach molded and remolcled his hoys and the ICHIII responded hy' doing its hc-st. .Xs a result. we saw a team that came hack to win its last three games and close a season that had started rather slowly, Init closed very' successI'uIly'. Highlight ol' the season came at the last game with Tipton. The whole teatn certainly' wanted to win that one. for their seniors were playing their last gatne. I'-Hig'h's small Init mighty teatn was matched against a hig rugged hunch hom Tipton. hut the Iowa City' hoys won lfl-l2. On the whole. L'-High had a yery' good season in Ioothall. Captain Bender ahly generalled the team throughout the season in spite ol his knee injury, and was one ol the llliilly good captains U-High has had in its history. Bus Smith was honored on the second all-conlerence team as a Iullhack, and Glenn Stimmel was elected next year's captain. ir-r ' A, J 90 if F XACOUNTRY TRACK 'I'he 1910 track season was one of the most success- ful in U-High history. It lost not one dual or tri- angular meet and had a fairly impressive record in other large meets. Clarence Hightshoe, captain of the N40 squad, was one of the most outstanding tracikmen to be graduated front U-High in many years. Nine lettermen, including Captain Hightshoe, re- turned to lead the Blue thinclads to an undefeated season in conference competition. Results of last season's fine record are as follows: U-High 74, Mlest Liberty 26, fDual Meetj: U-High first in triangular meet with XVest Liberty and XVest Branch: first in the lncloor Conference: Mile Medley Relay first at the State 'l'eachers' Relays: first in the Mechanics- ville Relays: first in the Outdoor Conference, first in dual meet with Sigoutney: and fourth in the Vinton Relays. Another powerful team has organized this year. Captain Lynn Fraizer is one of the best tracksters this year. Ten lettermen returned to form the nu- cleus of the team. ln a triangular with XVest Liberty and Anamosa, L7-High was barely squeezed out by If points XYest Liberty. 'l'hen in the following week, M'est Liberty nosed them out again by 112 points for the Indoor Conference championship. ln the State lncloor Meet, several boys placed, and Captain Frazier won the hall mile. XX'ith five experienced lcttermen'returning from the 1939 season, chances seemed very good last fall for another successful Cl'0Ss-C0llI1ll'y season in I9-10. Those lettermen who brought U-High one of the most spectacular seasons in recent years, were Cap- tain Yan Martin, Lynn Frazier, Frank and Fred Zeller, and Ed Smith. During the season of six meets, U-High lost not one of them, and set quite a few records of which we U-Highers are extremely proud. Our team won both the state mile team lace and the state cross- country race. ln the state meet, it might be added, that quite a few uncler-classmen did quite well. Next year the experience that they have gained will be of great advantage to all concerned. ln the XVilliamsburg Invitational Meet, three U-High boys beat last year's champion, which is a feat of which we are proud. XVith this very successful season in the background, the prospects that loom up for next year seem ex- cellent incleecl. for three lettermen will return, in- cluding the co-Captains, Fred and Frank Zeller, and quite a few other fellows. 'I'herefore, Dr. Carpenters hill and dale boys should have another fine season.
