Homecoming University lligh School celebrated its first homecoming january 18. At this time the queen of 1941 was crowned. The opening eve11t featured a parade procession with U. High's band, students, and float artists competing for awards. As a special toast to former graduates, Zlll alumni banquet was held at Hank's, a local restaurant, where seniors of 1941 chatted with seniors of the IQ3O'S. Movie minded people enjoyed a full length film, Peck, Bad Boy at the Circus, in the l.ittle Theater preceding the coronation of the queen. The aroused spirit of the celebration for a victory in a basketball bout with the I.ynx's rivals, Community lligh, was not dampened as they fell to defeat before Carbondale fans. A tense atmosphere was finally relieved on the last evening of the celebration when Mary Ellen Potts was crowned queen of University High School for 1941. lilaborate decorations festooned the occasion. The queen was attended by two girls from each of the Five grades, while the seniors were repre- sented by four attendants. The attendants were: Bette Allen, Agnes Greer, Mary Anne Stearns, Lucille Parrish. Myra Milton, Katherine Moseley, Betty Hunter. Mary lillen U'Brien, VVilla Mae North, Barbara Weller, Phyllis Austin, Harriet Fisher, and ,loan Goforth. A happy, first homecoming ended with a modern dance for the high school and the alumni. STUDENT COUNCIL The student council, sponsored by Hal Hall and Gladys Smith, is University High Schoolls governing body. It was formed in order to help make the high school more democratic. It is composed of two representatives from each home room who are chosen by the members of the class they are to represent. The coun- cil meets each week. At these meetings school problems are discussed, committees are appointed, and decisions made concerning school affairs. The council also makes the school budget, distributing the funds among the home rooms and various organizations. The state convention was held at Carbondale in 1940. About eight hundred students came from other high schools all over the state. A state convention is to be held this year. Our council is sending its senior members and one junior mem- ber as delegates. The junior, Norma O'Daniel, is running as second vice-president of the state student council. The senior members were chosen because it will be their last time to attend the convention as members of University High School. These members are: Robert Pulliam, president, Patricia Greathouse, Mary Ellen Potts, and Robert Hall. The Mummy Casa-Page forty
