Bond University High Band has been organized for three years under the direction of Charles Paterson. For the last two years they have won first in the district contest. Last year they went to state and won a second. They had a very high ranking at state and the judges said they would have received a first if they had had the instruments. Orchestra The orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Charles Paterson, is one of the smallest organizations in the school, partly because so many classes are in session when orchestra practices. They have appeared several times on assembly pro- grams. Since only larger organizations are allowed to enter state contests, the orchestra has entered none. Members receive individual and small group instruc- tion from Mr. Paterson and his student teachers, Mr. Charles Stief, Mr. Parks, and Miss Kate Bunting. Alumni Association The Alumni Association was organized for the first time this year. Anna Mary Schroeder, class of '39, was elected first president of the new Association. This picture was taken at the Alumni Banquet, a feature of U. High's first Home- coming held last fall. Faculty members and U. High seniors were guests at the Alumni Banquet held at Hank's Cafe prior to the all-school party, climax of two days Homecoming activities. It was the active alumni that introduced plans to U. High's Student Council for an annual Homecoming. All former U. High School students are eligible for membership with a small entrance fee to cover social events. The Mummy Case--Page thirty-eight

STUDENT COUNCIL The student council, sponsored by Hal Hall and Gladys Smith, is University High Schoolls governing body. It was formed in order to help make the high school more democratic. It is composed of two representatives from each home room who are chosen by the members of the class they are to represent. The coun- cil meets each week. At these meetings school problems are discussed, committees are appointed, and decisions made concerning school affairs. The council also makes the school budget, distributing the funds among the home rooms and various organizations. The state convention was held at Carbondale in 1940. About eight hundred students came from other high schools all over the state. A state convention is to be held this year. Our council is sending its senior members and one junior mem- ber as delegates. The junior, Norma O'Daniel, is running as second vice-president of the state student council. The senior members were chosen because it will be their last time to attend the convention as members of University High School. These members are: Robert Pulliam, president, Patricia Greathouse, Mary Ellen Potts, and Robert Hall. The Mummy Casa-Page forty
