Bill Koch runs for a touchdown after receiving a pass from Rex Whitaker. The action is taking place against Nederland. The next week University traveled to Nacadoches to encounter Nacadoches High. This game was lost by the Trojans 55-6. The only UHS score came on a 76 yard punt return by David Granger. For the third consecutive week the Trojans traveled out of town for their game. This time they encountered the Cnrsicana Tigers. Striking three times A 1 the first half for scores, the Trojans held off the Tigers in the last half to wedge outa Zi-I4 victory. The Ennis Lions struck back on a long kickoff return that set up the first Ennis score. After that the Lions were caged for the night, because University claimed the victory 33-6. This started the Trojans off on the right foot, because the T959 season proved to be a winning one. The second game played by the Trojans was also played on the turf of Municipal Stadium. This game was against the Weatherford Kangaroos. In this game University rolled to a 35-O victory over the Kangaroos. High lights of the game were two touchdowns scored by halfback David Granger and a spectacular touch- down pass from quarterback DeWayne Hale to end Johnny Dolezel. For the third game of the season the UHS Squad traveled to Nederland to play the Nederland Bulldogs. This game tested the Trojans since the Bulldogs were ranked as the number two team in the state at the time. University lost this tussle in the last quarter by a score of 21-28. There were many spectacular moments in the game. Among these were Bill Koch's fine catch for a Trojan score, and David Granger's 97 yard kickoff return. Darryl Cox also in- tercepted a wayward pass for the other Trojan score. Trojan tackle, F. W. Ferrell brings down a Cleburne ball carrier in the Cleburne game

SEASON The T959 season of the University High Trojan Football Squad was a season of extremes. It saw the Trojans turn-in some truly great performances, while on the other hand it also saw some moments of frustration take its toll . Many stars were crowned from the team. Among these were several all-district players. Some of the Trojans went so far as to win Super Centex honors, and one Trojan made all-state. Those selected for the District 9AAA first team were fullback Alton McNew, guard Pat Smithson, and end Johnny Dolezel . Those on the second team were center Tommy Swanner, and halfback David Granger. Fullback Alton Mc New received all-state honors. The UHS Trojans opened their season against Ennis at Municipal Stadium in Waco. On the first drive started by the Trojans Alton Mc New scored, drawing first blood.

David Granger returns a Nederland kickoff for 96 yards and a Trojan touchdown. When the Trojans journeyed to Killeen, they fell under a 2l-6 onslaught by the Kangaroos. The only bright spot for the Trojans was the running of Alton McNew and the passing of DeWayne Hale. Hale scored the only six-pointer for the Trojans. The next week the Trojans met Cleburne at Municipal Stadium in Waco for the district title. The Yellowjackets were too powerful, however, they passed by the Trojans 42-6. Scoring for the Trojans was David Granger on an 88 yard kickoff return. On this note University Torjans ended the T959 football season. Scores in the Corsicana game came on a pass from Rex Whitake to Johnny Dolezel and a quarterback sneak by Rex. The other score came on a six yard plunge by Alton Mc New. University then played Palestine High. Darryl Cox and DeWayne Hale starred in this game as the Trojans rolled to a 33- 0 win. To open district play the UHS Squad traveled across the Brazos River to play the LaVega Pirates. This game saw the Trojans unleashed an awesome ground attack spearheaded by Alton McNew, Alton Mc New. Alton rushed for 222 yards in scoring three thouchdowns and leading the Trojans to a 20-I4 thriller over the Pirates. The line also helped greatly in ending the eleven year jinx the Pirates had on the Trojans. The second District 9AAA game saw University post an impressive win over the Stephenville Yellow jackets. Darryl Cox, the speedy UHS back, broke free for three touchdowns.
