The Schooner , Popularity and Beauty ueen Contests ln October the students of University High School planned to carry on a popularity contest for the most popular girl and boy. Each class nominated a boy and a girl to represent it in the contest. After three days of campaigning, Tessie Terrell of the seventh grade and john Richards of the eleventh grade were declared electd. This was the first time th-at a contest had ever been held for the most popular boy. Immediately after the popularity contest was finished, plans were made for the election of a Beauty Queen. The staff decided that the best way to select the Beauty Queen would be by a contest and let the popular vote of the entire school decide the winner. Each class was allowed to nominate one girl to rep- resent the class in the contest, and the contest was run between the six girls. Votes were sold for one cent each and at the final count, Thelma jane Hughes was declared winner by a large majority. Page Forty-nine
