The Schooner Faculty Review Dr. W. W. Phelan has been Dean of the School of Education of the University of Oklahoma since 1912. Before coming to the University, he taught for five years at Bay- lor University, Waco, Texas and five years at the University of Chattanooga, Chatta- nooga, Tennessee. Before that time, he was principal and superintendent of public schools for seven years. Dr. Phelan was in the employ of the Chinese government in the year 1922-23, undertaking the re-organization of the University of Honan. He is one of the trustees of the Oklahoma Baptist Universityg a member of the Board of Directors of the Mid-Continent Life Insurance Company, Oklahoma Cityg was a member of the Text-Book Commission in 19245 Chairman of the Oklahoma State Tests and Measurements Survey: and just recently was re-elected member-at-large of the state committee of the state Young Men's Christian Association, in which capacity he has served for several years. Dr. Phelan has taken a great deal of interest in the welfare of the University High School and has done everything in his power to build the school up to the highest stan- dard. Dr. Ellsworth Collings has been Director of University High School since 1922. He came to the University of Oklahoma from Columbia University where he was a student for the two previous years. Before going to Columbia to finish his Ph. D. degree, Dr. Col- lings served for nine years as county and city superintendent and director of the experimen- tal school in Missouri. Dr. Collings has published several books and articles. Dr. Collings makes it possible for the students of University High School to engage in activities that they are able to successfully solve and which afford them the maximum amount of growth. Mr. F. F. Gaither has been Supervisor of History in University High School for the past two years, and principal of the high school for the past year. Before coming to University High School he served as principal in the public schools of Oklahoma for three years. He served in the United States Army in the World War. Through the untiring efforts of Mr. Gaither, the publication of this annual has been made possible. We of the staff are indeed grateful to him for his help and criticism in the preparation of this year-book. He also acted as sponsor of the Senior Class, which with his aid chose the school emblem. Miss Mabel Hodges came to University High School at the close of the first semester of the present school year. She takes the place of Miss Katharyn Osterhaus as Supervisor of English, who resigned after her marriage to Dr. J. S. Buchanan. Miss Hodges has taught in tk public schools of Oklahoma for eight years. ln spite of the fact that she has been with us only two months the student body and especially those in the English de- partment have learned to think a great deal of Miss Hodges and do her work for her because she makes it pleasant for them to work. The boys of University High School like M r. Fenn because he makes it possible for them to work with their hands and turn out articles that will serve them in later life. He has been around the University of Oklahoma for several years as assist- ant in shop, and Instructor in Manual Training for University High School. Miss Kate Barbour has taught in the public schools for seventeen years. Of this time. four years were spent as County Superintendent of Cleveland County: one year in the XVichita Falls High School, Wichita Falls, Texas. She has been teaching Mathematics in the .University High School for two years and has been a member of the County Exam- ining Board for eight years. Mr. Oren Stigler is a native of the state of Tennessee. He served as Principal of Com- mercial Schools at Hall-Moody and Union Universities for five years before coming to Oklahoma. He has been superintendent of public schools six years and has been a member of the University High School faculty for one year. Mr. Stigler teaches us to speak French and Spanish, and helps us to dramatize the plays that we find interesting in these languages. Mr. Henry D. Rinsland comes to Oklahoma from Virginia. He taught Industrial Arts in the states of Virginia, Missouri, and Oklahoma for seven years. He was city superintend- ent in Oklahoma for one year and for five years was Research and Vocational Guidance Director in the Ardmore City Schools. He served as Personnel Officer in Camp Travis for two years during the World War. At present he is a Captain in the Reserve Corps of the army. The science students of University High School have learned to think a great deal of Mr. Rinsland during his one year of supervising in this school. Page Tweltfe
