WHAT IS A FRIEND? Friends are people who care Who will always be there When our days are cloudy and gray When we need a helping hand They are there to understand And they do it in their own special way. Through thick and through thin On friends we can depend When we feel we have no where to turn Whether you're right or wrong They hold on strong And give you their utmost concern.

Phoenix Staff 1987 Left to right: Alicia Carpenter, Nirmala Chetram, Denise Chambers, Cassandra McCollum, Clesia Highsmith, Sandra Sledge, Shahrazad Odom, Monica McCloud. The 1987 Phoenix Staff never realized how appropropiate the theme Passages would prove to be in the completion of the yearbook. The year began uneventfully under the direction of advisor Gwen B. Jackson. Unfortunately Ms. Jackson had to leave school due to illness before the first Phoenix Pages were submitted. Thus began the quest to complete the yearbook which took a multitude of twists and turns. With the help of the loyal staffers above Senior write-ups and photos were collected, candid and 8th grade pictures cropped and identified and layout meetings organized. Using Bonnie Levine the Jostens Representative as a ‘‘substi- tute’ advisor, the first 80 pages were completed and the Phoenix took a positive turn toward “finalling.’’ With the addition of Mr. Frank Greene to coordinate ad sales and material collection with Senior Class Advisor Marilyn Lewis, and 8th Grade assistance from Mrs. Patricia Richardson aXnother road sign was passed. The final and crucial link in our passage to completion was the addition of Mr. Robert Allen to take over the advisory role, and the task of coordinating the last two deadlines. To say this was a typical year would b e an understatement, but in the same respect the value of the finished product becomes even a greater statement of the desire, commitment and exceptional nature of the University High School family under the continued support of Principal Mavie Bagby. The Phoenix 1987 has completed its ‘passage’, and the staff hopes you enjoyed the journey. 59
