Yet as the years passed, we developed to new heights in scholastic and athletic excellence. Students sensed this as they took more advantage of what “the mighty Phoenix’’ had to offer. As we learned to fly, we became responsible, independent and distinct, discovering ourselves as we paved our passage into the future. The school took steps forward as new programs and curricula were designed to enhance our basic foundation and assist in preparing us for our new lives. We went through a metamor- phorsis On each level - in the ninth we made adjustments, in the tenth we gained experience, in the eleventh we displayed confidence, and finally the twelfth year marked our passage into a new world. As we meet this passage with great apprehen- sion, we know one thing is for sure—change is inevitable. a “a Cte. | sleendleehisientnrenscianetl rep sane sone yammane ished ‘ aan chien. | St Oeeas Now we leave the nest ready to fly, to confront new horizons. For we as the Phoenix, have the innate ability to re- generate our energies as we conquer the challanges this ever changing universe offers. GRADDATION: A TIME FOR TRANSITION It’s finally here! Lori-Ann Bennett I have now reached the time to leave University High. Although I came in my Sophomore year, the people here took me in as though | had started from the very begin- ning. Three of my most important years were spent at this school. These three years will determine how much | will succeed in life. During my high school life, | have experienced many things. With maturity comes responsibil- — ity. A mature person is able to handle a situation ina | decent manner. A mature person should not be self- — ish. They should not always do things their way, but © they should often make sacrifices to do things the © right way. | If you feel that you have reached this point in your — life, and you know what you want, you should be a_ success in becoming a responsible adult. If you | haven't reached this point, I think that you should | start facing reality. So that one day you will be a q mature responsible person. Friends are people who care Who will always be there When our days are cloudy and gray When we need a helping hand They are there to understand And they do it in their own special way. Through thick and through thin On friends we can depend When we feel we have no where to turn Whether you're right or wrong They hold on strong And give you their utmost concern. Phoenix Staff 1987 Left to right: Alicia Carpenter, Nirmala Chetram, Denise Chambers, Cassandra McCollum, Clesia Highsmith, Sandra Sledge, Shahrazad Odom, Monica McCloud. The 1987 Phoenix Staff never realized how appropropiate the theme Passages would prove to be in the completion of the yearbook. The year began uneventfully under the direction of advisor Gwen B. Jackson. Unfortunately Ms. Jackson had to leave school due to illness before the first Phoenix Pages were submitted. Thus began the quest to complete the yearbook which took a multitude of twists and turns. With the help of the loyal staffers above Senior write-ups and photos were collected, candid and 8th grade pictures cropped and identified and layout meetings organized. Using Bonnie Levine the Jostens Representative as a ‘‘substi- tute’ advisor, the first 80 pages were completed and the Phoenix took a positive turn toward “finalling.’’ With the addition of Mr. Frank Greene to coordinate ad sales and material collection with Senior Class Advisor Marilyn Lewis, and 8th Grade assistance from Mrs. Patricia Richardson aXnother road sign was passed. The final and crucial link in our passage to completion was the addition of Mr. Robert Allen to take over the advisory role, and the task of coordinating the last two deadlines. To say this was a typical year would b e an understatement, but in the same respect the value of the finished product becomes even a greater statement of the desire, commitment and exceptional nature of the University High School family under the continued support of Principal Mavie Bagby. The Phoenix 1987 has completed its ‘passage’, and the staff hopes you enjoyed the journey. 59 SENIOR = ts a % v sa) v I ? Each of you has achieved academically! This is just one of the many important ingredients that make up the “circle of: life’’. As you travel the road ahead remember always to: Respect yourself and the rights of others. Never overindulge in any one thing for overindulgence will create disdain. Pursue your goals and ambitions with honesty. Stand tall for what you believe in; yet, at the same time have appreciation for the opinion of others. Give your best! In so doing, the best will come back to you. Learn to be commited and adapt to change. All of these ingredients when properly mixed will insure and contribute to your success in the future. Sincerely, ys ety Marie A. Bagby Principal Dear Graduates: It seems as if you entered University High School only yesterday! When I addressed you for the first time that day in September, | sensed there was something special about you. I was right! The enthusiasm and eagerness you displayed on that opening day have helped in motivating you to achieve academic success. You have met the tasks that were put before you. It is my firm belief that you will continue to face all of the challenges that life will thrust upon you with the same intensity you have displayed at University High School. Congratulations! Sincerely, T. V. Jones Vice-Principal CHAIRPERSONS Dear Graduates, The English and Foreign Lanquage teachers have en- deavored to give you a strong foundation in at least two languages, and a respect for written works of other cul- tures as well as your own. Reflect on your academic expiences at University High School and use them to your advantage during the coming years. You will be and inspiration to those stu- dents who come behind you. Best wishes from all of us, Khadijah Bashir English Dept. Chairperson Walter Ge nuario From all the mathematics and science teachers to all the graduates of the class of 1987, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and sincerest best wishes. More than any fact or piece of information that you learned at University High, we hope that you ac- quired and unquenchable thirst to examine, to challenge, to learn and to grow.
