White, a highly dedicated English teacher, has been teach- ing for almost nineteen years. She is the eldest of six siblings. Her husband, Nelson White, is a band director at Barringer High School. Mrs. White was a graduate of Youngstown University where she received a B.S. in Education. She obtained a masters equivalence by taking courses at Paterson State, Seton Hall University and Montclair State College in New Jersey, and Manhattan College in New York. Some of Mrs. White’s future goals are to do everything in her power to help improve the quality of education in Newark, to eventually invest in and administer private schooling for blacks and to write prose fiction. Her main goals in life are to be the best educator that she can be, whether teacher or administrator, and to move all people toward true “Brotherhood”. Reading, writing, and going to operas and plays are a few of her hobbies. Mrs. White also likes to throw card parties, coor- dinate fashions shows, and participate in dinner party dances, especially benefit events. Mrs. White is also involved in nu- merous activities such as the A.K.A. Sorority, Newark Council of Black Women, Advisor and Director of Drama Club at U.H.S., Co-Advisor of senior class of ’86, the Thistle Program at Montclair State College, and she is taking graduate courses in A.P. English. “The Class of 86 is one of the best classes I’ve ever encoun- tered. | love each of them because of their individual personalities.” 88

It serves as an opportunity for parents to participate in a regular “School Day” and meet the subject teachers. At University, one of the key ideas is the rela- tionship among parents, teachers and students as they unite in their efforts to create a unique learning situation, where the students benefit interpersonnally as well as in the area of education. University High, being a school for gifted and talented students, stresses exceptional academ- ics and higher learning. Another goal is to com- bine the first institution of learning, the home, with the secondary institution of learning, Uni- versity High, to form a strong body of knowl- edge in both social and pedagogical fields. The product of this combination is a versatile individual with the inherent capacity for growth and development. 87
