UHS STUDENTS SPEAK OUT University High students have been known for their outspoken attitudes in the areas of politics, social reforms and school poli- cies, so it was no surprise that University High turned out at the Anti- Apartheid March and Rally. The march was held No- vember 9, 1985 and included any- one in the state who wished to cry out against the apartheid at- titudes of South Africa. Larry Hamm, a former Newark student and Newark Board of Education member, spoke to the students in a special assembly program at the school to discuss the apartheid policies. He equat- ed the situation in South Africa with that of the American Blacks in the sixties. Many students ex- pressed their rage at the current situation and asked ways in U.H.S. students proudly display their banner. which they could support the movement. U.H. S. students, under the di- rection of Ms. Joylette Ransome, designed a banner for the dem- onstration. The banner received city-wide recognition and Mr. Hamm presented the school with the Nelson Mandela Peace - Award at a special assembly. Students at U.H.S. have always been concerned about the strug- gles in our times and are un- afraid to ra ise their voice in pro- test. Their voices will bring change to the societies of the twenty-first century. “LET IT ALL HANG OUT” To lessen the academic tension, Ce- dric, Qadr, and Jason give the stu- dents something to remember. The idea is crazy, but so are they. This shows that the students at University High can have fun, too. TAKE HUMAN BITES “Take Human Bites” Many of us have the tendency to bit off more than we can chew. Students tend to get involved in too many activities at once. You are setting yourself up for a “burn-out”, and denying yourself the opportunity to work up to your fullest potential. It is essential that you set your priorities in terms of short range goals as well as long range ones. Too many extra-curricular activities can put a strain on scholastics. Obsession with your studies can make you myopic in scope. A healthy balance be- tween activities and studies can assist you in your advancement toward maturity and adulthood. Moral: Don’t overdo it. Commit yourself to a reasonable amount of achievements and do your best. Joel biting off more than he can chew.
