ROAD TO PISCATAWAY GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The 1985-86 Girls Basketball season saw the Lady Phoenix players compile a sixteen and two record. Spurred on by coaches Sandra Hewitt and Valerie Barnes, and the solid determination of an unusually young team, our win- ning “Ladies” have maintained their winning ways. Led by Kim Wright and Felicia Oliver and Shani Baraka, they were able to score impressive victories through- out a relatively tough schedule. Marked by strong wins, such as the team’s championship over West Side K. Backum Christmas Tournament, the team marched into the Essex County Tournament against East Or- ange, and did well in an exciting run- ning game. Inspite of their loss their confidence was not shaken, and they have a good chance at winning the state championship. This well round- ed team promises to be even better next year. standing (I-r) Coach Sandra Hewitt, Wanda Wright (stats), Felicia Oliver, Kimberly Wrigh Rhonda Waller, Shirlise McKinley, Yolanda Traylor, Coach Valerie Barnes. kneeling (I-r) Jam lah Muhammed (mgr), Cordelia Washington, Shani Baraka, Dawn Greenlee.

The advantage is, of course, we may still consider ourselves to, be big winners. Above is a picture of the returning run- ners, with many hopefuls not pictured. They all await anxiously the start of a new and event filled season, but the feelings of the cold winter put a damper on young $tudents’ spirits. But as the snow melts, and the spring draws near University can rest assure they will have strong runners with determination and the spirit to win administered by coaches James Brown and James Kushmerick.
