University High School’s special program for gifted and talented students has produced yet another class of scholars. Of the fifty-nine graduates, seventeen students, having entered in the seventh grade, have attended University High for six years. Having been exposed to a high school atmoshere at an early age, these young people were required to take courses such as Algebra, Foreign Language, and Typing. Now that graduation time is here again, we are honored to give recognition to the students who have “hung in there” with determination to succeed in a college-bound curriculum for six years. And so the family of University High School congratulates you on years of hard work and fortitude. Although you may feel your time has come and “Not A Moment Too Soon”, we will miss you. Front-M. It has become a hobby of some to make it their daily prior- ity to keep up with the changing fashions. These students accent the halls of U.H.S. with their chic, debonair, and charismatic fashions. Physical beauty is a God-given inheritance. Each individual pos- sesses something special which makes their particular style of beauty appealing to all eyes. Beauty can't be categorized. They possess exceptional talents in the areas of music, art, the performing arts, and in creative writing. These students are able to maximize innate skills through their dedication and hours of hard work. To be talented and skilled in an area is commend- able. However, the motivation to succeed has to accompany the talent if prosperity is to be at- tained. Also, prosperity and success are only worthwhile when they can be seen in the achieve- ment of goals we’ve established for ourselves. Joel Grice and Qadr Camillo display their musical talents. It is considered a privilege to be well known in our class. People will find that it is usually the outspo- ken characters who are respect- ed and called upon to be class leaders, to make things happen, and bring a touch of humor to our scholastic endeavors. The class of ’86 is composed of many people, but only a few manage to be in the forefront. People who have good personal- ities, wit, charm, and charisma are usually favorites with every- one. There isn’t an art or method to being popular, but having pleasing qualities usually at- tracts people to these zany characters. We will always remember these unforgettable people. The char- acters who have that special quality that keeps life from be- ing unbelievably dull through their wild escapades and mad- cap antics. Can Qadr Camillo really deal with three young ladies? Sabrina Wright, Natalyn Dunson, Crysta Matthews. Sabrina Wright is definitely a handful for Qadr Camillo. Melanie Adams has really got the hang of University along with Joel Being popular is a piece of cake for Ras Baraka and Crystal Matthews. Grice and Ras Baraka. 26 Another area of light hearted fun in which U.H.S. students stand out is flirting. Flirting can _be exciting if you play it safe. In the class of '86, we definitely have students who know how to flirt. Ever one has his own spe- cial technique. Flirting can be al- luring as well as flattering. It is not the amount of coquetry that matters, but how you carry your- self that establishes your Natalyn Dunson and Jason Henry drawing a crowd as usual. Jamie Richardson and Allison Cannady flirting again! What's up with the situation? reputation. DRAMATIS PERSONAE — Most often the celebrities in a group make the good times happen. There is no doubt about it, the class of eighty six has many different characters. Each has a unique personality that has made them stand out in a crowd. The students on the next two pages are excep- tional characters whom University High will never forget. Qadr Camillo, Derrick McKoy, Joel Grice, and Ras Baraka all in the mix. Bless the many comedians whose wit and charm bright- ened those grey days and brought a smile to the face of an uptight teacher or a lecture weary student. And just because a student is a little bashful doesn’t mean that he hasn’t made an impression on the class. Sometimes hidden behind that shield you can find a heart of gold or a kooky eccentric. They are special in their own way. 30 Sabrina Wright and Alecia Lowry Hangin’ in there buggin’ out. | Tracey Gold, Mylene Redding, Lelia Hicks, and Paula Jernigan are keeping their usua! low profile. Joel Grice, Vanessa Roberts, And Lisa Jackson caught again spreading the news. Crystal Mattews, Lanita Carson, And Domingos Fon- seca in their most comfortable spot, on the phone. CHIT TER-CHATTER Last, but never least, there are the talkative ones. These students know it all. The phrase “shut up” will not stop them. What would the day be like without them? - Completely silent!: May God bless their mouths so good things may continue to come out. It’s good to talk, but let it be worth listening to. 31 86 CHE CLASS WICH CLASS NATALYN DUNSON-PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS In September of 1982, the class of 1986 came together to form what would become a unique, diverse el- ement in University’s history. We arrived as immature individuals seeking novel experiences, new friendships, and a “special education.” Over the past four years, we’ve encountered many situations, developed new friendshps, and gained a special education. Physically, mentally, and emotionally we have grown into a close family unit. In the final assessment, we have individually contributed a great deal to the history of University High. As a family unit, we have acquired more than we have given in, having been a part of the Uni- versity environment. No words can effectively express my feelings for the class of 1986. More than just having established unbreakable spiritual and emotional bonds, we have become links in many chains of friendships. To my classmates ... “Never forget our times together for they have been learning experiences. When each of you have acquired your aspirations, don’t forget your roots in University on the struggle you undertook to obtain your goals. Most of all, never forget ‘the way we were’.” Together, forever in spirit . . . the Class of 1986. Peace and love always. MELANIE ADAMS t Melanie. 7-28-68 (Leo) ee K.A. Sweet a Thang Meli- ‘Mel. MA. Most colleges and universities will grant credit for high grades in accor- dance to their policies. Receiving credit takes much effort on the stu- dents part. Students taking these courses must be self motivated in or- der to do well, and must be willing to spend more time on their homework than those taking regular courses. Academics, social atmosphere, close- ness to home, financial aid, and cost are some of the things that college bound Seniors must consider when deciding about their future. In an ef- fort to make these choices easier, the Guidance Department supplies repre- sentatives from colleges, universities, business, and technological schools. Seniors also attended a College Fair at Essex County College. Various educa- tional institutions were represented. The students heard lectures describ- ing the many opportunities available to them. As students wandered through the aisles, they were provid- ed with information necessary for making one of the most significant decisions of their lives. From service academics to Ivy League institutions, the wonderful opportunities are out there. The time is now for students, particularly the Seniors, to set their goals and strive to achieve them. The direc- tor is Dr. Schulman. This class is considered as a regular history course. It consists of mock trials, which are students going against each other, at- tempting to win a criminal case by courtroom pro- cedures. Professional lawyers visit the class and offer their opinions as well as advice on the best techniques to use to prove your point. Whether you're the prosecutor or the defense attorney, the information is helpful. The Law-in-Action class also attends real trials in genuine courtrooms. Many questions must be brought out in order to delineate the importance of the case. After these inquires have been answered and the eviense is turned in, the judge allows the jury to deliberate and then he pronounces his judgement: guilty or innocent. The march was held No- vember 9, 1985 and included any- one in the state who wished to cry out against the apartheid at- titudes of South Africa. Larry Hamm, a former Newark student and Newark Board of Education member, spoke to the students in a special assembly program at the school to discuss the apartheid policies. He equat- ed the situation in South Africa with that of the American Blacks in the sixties. Many students ex- pressed their rage at the current situation and asked ways in U.H.S. students proudly display their banner. which they could support the movement. U.H. S. students, under the di- rection of Ms. Joylette Ransome, designed a banner for the dem- onstration. The banner received city-wide recognition and Mr. Hamm presented the school with the Nelson Mandela Peace - Award at a special assembly. Students at U.H.S. have always been concerned about the strug- gles in our times and are un- afraid to ra ise their voice in pro- test. Their voices will bring change to the societies of the twenty-first century. Students tend to get involved in too many activities at once. You are setting yourself up for a “burn-out”, and denying yourself the opportunity to work up to your fullest potential. It is essential that you set your priorities in terms of short range goals as well as long range ones. Too many extra-curricular activities can put a strain on scholastics. Obsession with your studies can make you myopic in scope. A healthy balance be- tween activities and studies can assist you in your advancement toward maturity and adulthood. Moral: Don’t overdo it. The course is presented as a one year course to all freshmen students at Univer- sity High. It intergrates art and world civilization in the hope that students will be encouraged to learn history with artistic values. The basic goal of the course is to outline the history of human expe- rience and achievement. Without the former some may not have gotten through the latter. Throughout the four or even six years at U.H.S., our clos- est friends have provided shoulders to cry on, sympathetic ears, and helpful advice. When looking back on these years, it is cer- tain that these close friendships will form the fondest memories. When the pressure becomes too intense, call- ing a soulful talk with a friend helps release the tension. A close pal can help you put the world in perspective. It would be difficult to imagine the world or even University witho ut a friend to share the load. A laugh, a walk, or a talk with a buddy to share our inner feelings and emotions can bring a smile to your face and contentment to your heart. The rapidly increasing emphasis on computer technology and computer education in the United States today is evident in University’s Math De- partment where I5 IBM computers were installed late last year. After much negotiating, University students will now have the facilities to receive hands-on-training. Stu- dents and faculty realize the impor- tance of being computer proficient in to day’s society. With such an interest in computers, on the part of the student body, it is predicted that there should be rapid growth in the accessable facilities. It serves as an opportunity for parents to participate in a regular “School Day” and meet the subject teachers. At University, one of the key ideas is the rela- tionship among parents, teachers and students as they unite in their efforts to create a unique learning situation, where the students benefit interpersonnally as well as in the area of education. University High, being a school for gifted and talented students, stresses exceptional academ- ics and higher learning. Another goal is to com- bine the first institution of learning, the home, with the secondary institution of learning, Uni- versity High, to form a strong body of knowl- edge in both social and pedagogical fields. The Chorus is open to students who are interested in classical, contemporary and gospel music. It presents the opportunity for students to express themselves through the art of music. The chorus gives two major concerts a year- one at Christmas, the other at in the spring. Students who are in- terested in instrumental music are given the opportunity to come to- gether and express themselves through the art of instrumental music. This year the band has expanded to include a jazz ensemble. the group delights their audience with such soulful renditions as A Train and Quincy Jones’ classics. The concert this spring had an unusual twist. The cafeteria was turned into the Cotton Club complete with New York cityscape, covered ta- bles and candlelight to create the jazz atmosphere. U.H.S. is really in the groove! 113 THESPIANS Students in the Drama club are en- couraged to approach drama as a fun, but serious activity; the implementa- tion of drama productions require ef- fort, commitment and perseverence, as gratification is not always as im- mediate as in other activities as cheerleading, playing basketball, or running track. However, students should ultimately appreciate that par- ticipation in drama provides impetus for the development of character. All training is therefore, directed toward the personal growth of each individ- ual, whether thespian or technician. Students should also eventually come to realize that it contributes much to the cultivation of rhetorical skills, poise and social graces. CLASS CHRONICLE 1982-1986 Our class began-with many, The success of our future to gain. The ambition-to strive for our goals, But now-only fifty-nine remain. It was a period of adjustment, To prepare for what life had in store. A time to evoke intelligence. A thirst for knowledge-then more! We plotted our school years out, And demanded the best education. Principals new—and new teachers too, Joined the school’s administration. Our desire to attain all excellence, Was definitely-increasing. While honor roll grades and higher class ranks, Were ours for the achieving. We attended classes at Rutger’s, And Junior Achievement too. Worked hard at Essex County, To gain a S.T.E.P. or two. We sang our hearts out in the Chorus, Became great Thespians and fans. Some joined the ‘Honor Society’, Others chose to play in the Band. Exotic fashions were modeled, To excite, delight, and enchance. We danced all night at the parties, We reveled at the ‘Achievers Dance’. We displayed our physical stamina, When our sports teams were obtained. Whether victorious or defeated, We gave our support just the same. Even after cycles were shortened, We didn’t find it exceedingly hard- To maintain our B-n’ above averages, To receive still-the little GOAL CARDS. Those crazy class bake sales, The cakes no one wanted to bring. The mania in the hall- Over the new soda machine. The studying and the homework, The quizzes and the exams. MARCH TO THE STATES BOYS’ BASKETBALL The 1985-86 Boy’s Basketball season, has been considered our best, not only in the win-loss column but also emo- tionally in terms of school spirit and unity. The varsity team has compiled a eleven and six record going into state tournaments. The coaches and players both attribute this to an un- usually competitive schedule. Injuries and ineligibility to key players did not help the situation any. Major losses to teams such as Science High and Vero- na, deeply effected the morale of the team. An important win for the Mighty Phoenix was the home game against Irvington Tech, clinching the game by three points in the last forty seconds. This win signified the turning point of trading losses, and the players went on to win six straight games led by team leaders Lance Calhoun, Phillip McBurrows, and Lateef Sarnor. CROSS COUNTRY The Cross-Country team of University High, led by coaches, James Brown and James Kushmerick, has had its ups and downs, while managing to come away with impressive trophies and medals. Handicapped by lack of experience and facilities, the runners determination and long hours of running have more than made up for it. In Cross-Country, Robert Barr, who placed 8th in the city and 5th in the state sectionals, achieved above his duty to anchor University to a 3rd place finish in the city and 4th in the state sectionals. Along with Robert on the varsity squad were David Jean, Belton Brevard, Jeff Barr, Maurice Gordon, Keith Wilkes, and Chris Hurd. These runners put forth solid performances on what is commonly known as the lonliest sport. The Junior Varsity team which consists of Elliot James, Rasul Sharif, Ralston Morris and Oding Dill did well in their first year of running. In Varsity there was one female, Senior Patrice Bumbrey who in her first year enjoyed herself and showed that females can do more. Coaches Brown and Kushmerick say they are looking forward to winning season next year. 126 VARSITY RUNNERS TOP: STANDING (L-R) Belton Brevard, David Jean, Robert Barr, Coa- ch James Brown. SPRING TRACK The yearbook staff's at an unique disad- vantage when it comes to doing spring track layouts. The book is usually done be- fore the season even has a chance to start. The advantage is, of course, we may still consider ourselves to, be big winners. Above is a picture of the returning run- ners, with many hopefuls not pictured. They all await anxiously the start of a new and event filled season, but the feelings of the cold winter put a damper on young $tudents’ spirits. But as the snow melts, and the spring draws near University can rest assure they will have strong runners with determination and the spirit to win administered by coaches James Brown and James Kushmerick. Spurred on by coaches Sandra Hewitt and Valerie Barnes, and the solid determination of an unusually young team, our win- ning “Ladies” have maintained their winning ways. Led by Kim Wright and Felicia Oliver and Shani Baraka, they were able to score impressive victories through- out a relatively tough schedule. Marked by strong wins, such as the team’s championship over West Side K. It’s just how you think, that’s all. If you think success, you'll have success Provided you also do, And follow your thoughts with the kind of work. That is going to make it true. But-you can’t get big by thinking small, oo And you can only go as far coy As your constant thoughts and daily deedS@ age For just as you think— you are. So, watch your thoughts and make them fit Whatever you'd like to see: For as you think you are bound to live, And whatever you think — you'll be, From the Parent, Teacher, Student Organization % Met TE RO FADES PURER RS
