Gifted And Talented Class Of 1981 The Eighth Grade Graduation Class of 1981, is the second graduating class of the Gifted and Talented Program at University High School. Although this marks the students' completion of two years of work at University High School, the program itself was begun three years ago in September of 1978, in an attempt to create and offer an advanced curriculum for seventh and eighth grade students who are academically or artistically talented in the city of Newark. The program has been quite successful. The students have really had a great opportunity here at University High School to be part of one of the best schools in the city. They have been exposed to advanced courses of study in all areas of learning both academic and social. The high school atmosphere has been an invaluable experience. Students have had the opportunity to attend classes taught by the high school faculty in foreign languages, art, music and physical education in addition to the classes taught by the regular seventh and eighth grade faculty: Ms. Cicalese (Math), Mr. Moore (Science) Mr.Richardson (English) and Mr. Tortorello (Social Science). The acceptance of the eighth graders has been exceptional and quite evident among the upperclassmen. Being able to relate to students who are older and more mature has been an educational experience in itself. Our graduates have taken some memorable trips and have had to assume the responsibility of fund-raising activities to help defray costs. Teamwork and cooperation were learned firsthand along with a sense of pride and commitment. You can be assured that our eighth graders will be ready for any high school situation, activity and experience whether continuing at University High School or at any other school of their choice.
