Dear Senior Class, I am delighted to have this opportunity to speak to you about your graduation and the beginning of your career in college or some other post secondary educational experience. 1981 will be a very critical year for all Americans. Inflation is a very serious problem. Social programs designed to help people will now take a back seat to non-humanitarian issues. The entire form of government will change. These will not be easy times, times. Attending college is a mind expanding experience. It is also a serious preparation for acquiring the skills necessary to help you find a job in the labor market. We need your serious re-dedication to excellence in college so that the community and the nation can reap the fruits of your labor. Best wishes for an exciting and challenging college, graduate and or professional school experience. Willie J. Young Principal To the Seniors, The major objective of University High School is to prepare each of you for a successful career at the college or university of your choice. The fact that we have achieved this objective is attested to by the fact that over 90% of you will be enrolled in college by September. Our basic philosophy has been to instill in each of you the fact that life is too short to wait until opportunity knocks. Given a strong academic foundation, we hope that you will create your own opportunities. Prayerfully I say Vaya con Dios , Go with God. Remember, always we will be here to help - Don't forget us, we will never forget you. Joseph Malanga Vice Principal J6 Dear Seniors, I want to thank the students of University High School for contributing to the happiness and satisfaction I have always felt in my work with the students of the Newark school system. Although I have attempted to give to you my best effort to share with you my own joys in learning, I have always thought it was never quite enough. I have continued to receive more than I could ever give you. In my effort to repay the joy you have given me, I am reminded of a fragment of a poem by Langston Hughes: We should have a land of trees Bowed down with chattering parrots. Brilliant as the day. And not this land where birds are gray. It is my hope for you, the graduating class of University High School 1981, that when you look back on your high school days, you will remember A land of trees Brilliant as the day . And that in some small way I will have helped to open to you that land of brightly plummaged birds which sing a happy song to carry with you through life.
