University-0 Tustin-0 In a game billed as a defensive struggle, University battled the Tustin High Tillers to a scoreless tie in the season opener. Two Dave Langmade interceptions helped preserve the tie, but the game proved costly for the Trojans as starting quarterback John Halagan was knocked out with a broken foot. University-3 Los Amigos-0 Dave Langmade booted a 33 yard field goal and Coach Dick Roche's defense recorded their second consecutive shutout in a 3-0 win over the Los Amigos. Interceptions by Cliff Nelson and Lang- made, plus a fumble recovery by Dave Axline kept the Lobos in check. University-0 Corona del Mar-2 Dan Mitchell's last second field attempt sailed just wide as Corona del Maris Lea Kings made a first quarter safety stand up for a 2-0 win in the South Coast League opener. The Trojans' offense couldn't get moving until the final three minutes of play when passes to Dave Axline and Tony Fuller set up Mitchell's three point try. University-12 Mission Viejo-16 Mike Hearle took the second half kickoff 85 yards to a score and Tony Fuller went 11 yards on a reverse for a touchdown. But the Diablos of Mission Viejo rallied for the game winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter to overshadow a inspired defensive effort. University- 1 9 Dana Hills-31 The Dana Hills Dolphins rolled up over 300 total yards but University's Tony Fuller made it a contest with two long touchdown runs before the Trojans succumbed, 31-19, John Davis make an impressive debut at quarterback for University, but the Dolphins, explosive offense sent the Trojans to an 0-3 South Coast League record. University-12 El Toro-7 Tony Fuller went 90 yards on a kickoff return and University's defense regained its early season form to deal the El Toro Chargers a 12-7 loss. A Dave Lang- made interception set up the other Trojan score, a one yard plunge by fullback Rick Shiffer late in the second quarter. University-0 Costa Mesa- 1 6 The Trojans twice drove inside Costa Mesa's 10 yard line late in the game but came away empty handed, falling 16-0 to the Mustangs, A blocked punt and two quarterback keepers gave Costa Mesa the winning points. University-9 Laguna Beach-20 Dave Axline scooped up a fumble and reced over 90 yards for a touchdown, but the Artists of Laguna Beach romped to a 20-9 win.
