Walk together, Talk together, All ye people of the earth is the motto of American Field Service CAI-:Sl Each year, UHS receives two foreign students who live for a year in Irvine. In return, we send our students to a foreign country to live for either a summer or year. AFS is working to establish better understanding between peoples. AS Magnus Bach A.F.S. Finland The first time I heard about AFS was about three years ago. I thought that to be an AFS student for a year might be a good chance for me to learn about the United States and to speak English well. Now that l am here l realize that it's not just a good chance but it is a unique and excellent opportunity for me to learn about another country. It is interesting to notice what kind of differences there are. For instance, even though the United States and my coun- try are both free countries, it is the way people do things in different countries that make them unique. l want to thank all of you who have been so kind and helpful with everything to me. The peo- ple who have meant most to me are of course my host family, the Glenns. l wish I could stay longer or at least see you sometime later. M agnus Esteban Salvadores' A.F.S. Chile It is very,difficult for me to describe an entire year of my life in just a few words. I wish I were able to do that and to give proper thanks to all of the people who have been a part of this beautiful experi- ence. Looking back to those first days, I see the formation of a part of my lifeg a year full of memories both of people and of events which have shown me a new way of being and of living. I wish more students could take advan- tage of scholarships like this one, for every student who has such an experience is then able to share and to transmit to others a message of peace and fraternity. An A.F.S. student realizes that there exist no boundries brought about by dif- ferences in language, ideology or raceg he finds a true appreciation of the brotherly co-existence which survives in this world of conflictg he thinks beyond his own per- son and becomes a person prepared to give to others. I hope that what I say here will not be dismissed as mere pretty rhetoric , but that from this you willhunderstand my meaning and my fervent hope that each and every one of us might learn to help people live well together. This is the goal of A.F.S. We can make it reality. 21 Esteban A
