Dave Scrogging, Art Heise, and Eric Springer prevented further Mission Vieio scoring with timely interceptions. UNIVERSITY-21, LAGUNA BEACH-0 Dan Hill intercepted two passes and University run- ners went over the 100 yard mark as the Trojans clim- bed back up to .500. Hill led off the second and fourth quarters with pickoffs, setting up touchdown runs by Bill Keever, Mike Egan, and Ron Dykes. Keev- er's sprint measured 34 yards, Egan ran I5 yards, and Dykes bulled though the line from one-yard out. Paul Seidel, Tim Allison, Brian Andrew, Pete Mac- Donald, and Mike Handfield enioyecl a good game on the offensive line. UNIVERSITY-14, DANA HILLS-0 Ron Dykes broke a scoreless tie late in the fourth quarter on a spectacular 89 yard touchdown run to give University their fourth win against three defeats. Just two minutes after Dykes' run Sean Graham raced ll yards for an insurance touchdown. Dan Mitchell made good on both of his extra-point attempts. Sergio Delgadillo intercepted a pass and added a fumble recovery for University while Dykes also picked off an errant Dana Hills pass. UNIVERSITY-7, EL TORO-0 Shutting out their third straight opponent, University put themselves in thick of the South Coast League title race. Bill Keever's one-yard burst and Dan Mitc- hell's extra point kick provided the margin of victory. Eric Springer intercepted a pass and ran 57 yards with it near the end of the game, but the Troians could not put the ball over the goal line before time rah out. Art Heise also had an interception and Mark Murphy and John Ney both recovered El Toro fum- bles. UNIVERSITY-6, SAN CLEMENTE-21 The Troians' playoff hopes were ended by unbeaten San Clemente, as University fell into a three-way tie for second place. Ron Dykes got the lone score on a flashy 30 yard sprint early in the fourth quarter. Dykes had a 40 yard run prior to his touchdown. Uni- versity's defense rose for two defensive stands inside the Troian 20, but on ineffective offensive attack, which gained little more than Dykes' 98 rushing yards, meant defeat. Dykes' 89 Yard Cake-Walk Sparks Defensive Shut-Out. . . if UNIVERSITY-0, TUSTIN-6 Turnovers and penalties stopped University in the season kickoff. In a game marked by tough defensive play, the lone score came midway through the third quarter on a 49 yard pass. Quarterback John Hafn- gan led a desperate catch up attempt with under two minutes to play, hitting Kelly Moran twice on pass plays. Sean Graham caught a Halagan toss and raced deep into Tustin territory. An interception with .35 left ended the Troians hopes. The defensive line had an outstanding game, sacking the Tustin quarter- back eight times for 51 yards. UNIVERSITY-29, LOS AMIGOS-6 Coach Dick Roche got his first Varsity win as the offense made a complete turnaround from the prior week's performance. Junior fullback Bill Keever opened the scoring on a one yard, fourth down 148 The Athletes plunge in the first quarter. Defensive tackle Mark Murphy scooped up a Los Amigos fumble and ram- bled 50 yards for another score while tailback Ron Dykes' two point conversion made the score 14-O. Sean Graham took a handoff and raced 32 yards for a touchdown iust three minutes after Murphy's run. Dykes finished the scoring on a six yard touchdown run. UNIVERSITY-14, VALENCIA-6 Ron Dykes rushed for 1 18 yards and University won for the second consecutive week. Mike Egan came off the bench in the fourth quarter to steal the victory, gaining 45 yards, including a five-yard touchdown run. Dan Mitchell's extra point kick with 4:30 left in the game gave the Troians an insurmountable lead. John Halagan clicked with Sean Graham on a 26 yard pass play for six points midway through the sec- ond period. The Valencia game marked the third straight time the defense had allowed iust six points. UNIVERSITY-14, ESPERANZA-18 University suffered their second pre-season defeat succumbing to Esperanza's option play. That play worked for gains of 24, 23, 19, and 15 yards in the third quarter when Esperanza racked up two touch- downs. The Troians scored on a 26 yard run by Ron Dykes late in the first half, and on Bill Keever's one- yard dive with 1:10 left in the game. Dan Mitchell kicked two extra points for University. UNIVERSITY-0, MISSION VIEJO-9 Ron Dykes ran wild, but University failed to score in the South Coast League opener. Dykes rambled far 151 yards, but three fumbles and ineffective passing spelled defeat as all of University's offense came between the 20 yard stripes. The opposition scored
