11 S.E.L.F. Reaching 0ut to the Community A new grading system and a new adviser greeted the S.E.L.F. students for the '78-'79 school year. The 36 students of the Student Educational Learning Force program have gone on a standard grading system instead of the pass! fail system they received in previous years. S.E.L.F. students commute from U-Hi to the six local elementary schools lBroadway, Opportunity, South Pines, Chester, McDonald and Universityl to serve as teachers' aides. Leroy Flatt, the adviser for the S.E.L.F. program was extremely pleased with the results of the course. The students really got a lot out of this class, not only our students, but also the students of the local elementary schools. S.E.L.F. Scholars Join Honor Societ Honor Society is a club designated for high academic achievers. The organ- ization is strictly honorary, there- fore the group does not sponsor any activities. This is decided by a majority vote of the members at the beginning of the year. Exactly how are Honor Society mem- bers chosen? The applicants apply directly to the National Honor Society for membership. One must also have the requested g.p.a. to iulill the requirements. Sophomores-3.8, Jun- iors-3.4, and Seniors-3.2. Mr. Brown, the Honor Society advisor, said that nearly Zfa of the members receive scholarships and all of them recieve certiicates of membership. He stated, The basic reason for joining, however, is the appearance of it on your record. Honor Society members, Mike Shiosaki, and Lori Shagina demonstrate the high level of intelli- gence maintained by the Society.
