Saturday M y l7 l954 Z6 1072.7 I found myself wanderrng rn the halls of U H S wrth wonderful mem orres rrngrng through my mmd I walked to the offrce just lrke old trmes and prnched myself to realrze that Drck Buskrrk wasnt strll srttrng there and that Jewell Fagan wasn t strll wartrng for a readmrttance slrp As though classes were rn sessron I tugged up the starrs to government class amazrngly meetrng Katre on the way wrth that unforgettable smrle Gathered around the radrator was the usual crowd Brll Grlmore warmrng hrs pants Bulldog Mullan wrlted on the Hoor for a last mrnute crammrng Pat Wrllard Ann Woodward and Patty Tomlrnson jumprng the rope wrth the Venetran cord whrle Betsy Gaugh srngs Snow Whrte Chrrs Hepner zoomed by wrth a cheer for the Navy but was drowned out by Johnny Humphrey s cheer for the Red Socks The bell rrngs there s a wave to Prexy Lerble at her patrol post and Jean Haywood dodges the mad rush for the room Three mrnutes later Paula Bollenbacher and Mac Culleton strll bundled rn coats and scarfs skrd neatly rnto therr seats The class relaxes as the debators begrn Brll Cleve land Dave Harrng and Ralph Kerr Rob Love recerves frfty cent passes now and then for class dues The buzzer agarn all tramp to the Senror Class meetrng Ox Gavrt pounds the desk for order and smrles hrs wrltrng smrle whrle Jo Hanson struggles through the mrnutes rn her quret manner Eyes then turn to Peg Woodward for a commrttee report The meetrng ends and atten tron turns to screams and hand shakrngs wrth Fred Gregory of the Sea Bees It rs also Navy Day for Joan Carter as Ivan Headley rs home Marran Gregory rushes by the excrtement whrle Elrz Hrnes hangs on Lpon passrng Mary Bradley and Marjorre Hooten they shove a stack of materral to be typed rnto therr arms Gay Jellema just back from Mrchrgan trres to grab the grrls as they go by for bowlrng money Stella Grabe looks fagged wrth a hand full of money and defense stamps On to chemrstry Brll Frelder creates amazrng colors and odors whrle Loren Stevens and Jrm Stone break therr equrpment Accrdents come fast and Margaret Easton rushes to the rescue wrth her Hrst ard krt Walt Goodman hangs from the cerlrng tryrng to get an actron prcture whrle Georgranna French shudders quretly by the blower Above rn the musrc room I can hear Carl Stapleton and Jack Cook croonrng and I thrnk rt s Marc Wrllrams blastrng out hrs trumpet whrle Phrl Warrrck jrves out wrth the drums Remember when Barbara Swartz used to play the prccolo and when Charlre Wrnters played a horn? Our class was really hep But on to gym for more actron Chuck Murray and Paul Tompson hang from the balcony wrth cameras to snap the gym sharks Vrvran Grlmore Dorothre Levaggr Betty and Wanda Wermer There rs a roar overhead and the plane experts Patsy Hanson Joy Hockgerger and Betty Roberts rnterrupt the prcture Class ends and thoughts turn to food At 17 30 Tom Black and Jeep Zeller hop rr to Take It And Get Max Porter and Pammy Cagle get hep too Bob Pennrngton rn zoot surt and Joe College Tom Duane dropped rn to watch Marcelle Pfaff and Glodrne Welch jorn the jrtter bugs Loud laughs bellow out and who would be tellrng the latest but Joe Hensley and Dare Church l 55 on to cl Betty Scully looks dr77y wrth uad problems Dotty Iaylor krcks her stubborn locker rn the last two mrnutes before the bell The afternoon lags on and finally the four oclock bell rrngs Tommy Walker smrles rn relref and dashes out collrdrng wrth Harold Aynes on the way Down to the gym now to watch Charlre Claude and Crder practrcrng basketball wrth expectatrons of wrnnrng the sectronal Yes those are certarnly wonderful memorres wonderful memorres I shall never forget It was a grand ole trme I had rn my years at U H S . il . . v - , , . ..., . . . , . .. . . x I V U. . . . . i . . . . . . . x , . . , . STO The class of 1944 ns the Hrst tn the history of the UDlXCfSlKy School to graduate w1th the memorles of both Jumor and Senlor hlgh school days During thls flrst year thrs class made up the largest home room rn the school These seventh graders were yery ACIIVL rn school functlons espec1ally ID tntramurals The first mtramural ayy ard lssued by the school was presented to thls home room for bemg the champron of the year A Halloween and Chrrstmas party kept the soc1al l1fe bu771ng durmg the first semester Later rn the year the group enjoyed a box supper skat1ng party and prcnrc In the second year of 1ts hrstory the class contrnued to be outstandmg Much was done durrng home room perxod to fam1l1ar17e the students vuth par lxamentary procedure The mam soc1al event of the year was a skatrng party The annual skatmg party was then establxshed by the class as a tradxtmon By the Freshman year the class had expanded mto two home rooms These nrnth graders were very 1nterested rn school athletlcs Three fourths of the second team basketball team and one half of the track team were Freshman boys The most outstandmg convocatnon of l94l was the Informatxon Please program sponsored by the Freshman class As Sophomores the class of l944 contmued lts career IH the Unryersltv School Several soc1al events vsere held They lncluded a box supper two plcmcs and the annual skatlng party Act1v1t1es ln the Jumor year started vstth a Guxnea Prg Hop and a p1cn1c Th1s class held one of the most successful Penny Carnrvals ever to be attempted ln the school Wrth the returns from the carmval a memorable Jumor Semor Prom was presented Tovyard the end of the year a Jumor Joe Day and a prcnlc were enjoyable oclal events grven by the class As Seniors the 1944 graduatmg class sponsored many actrymes Durmg the first semester the comxcal Jordannus Sklts were produced as a convocatxon The fascrnatmg Sen1or Play also made hxstory rn the dramatxcs of the school The class took great prlde rn those Senxors on the basketball team and backed them wrth school sp1r1t Dances after ball games and soc1al hours vyere spon sored by the class In the second semester all of the Senmors enjoy ed the Prom gxven for them by the Junrors Further memorres were made on that merry makmg Tramp Day and at the Sen1or Faculty basketball game The years 1CIlVlI16S ended wlth the baccalaureate and commencement seruces These years 1n the Unrversrty School haye xndeed been memorable ones for each and exery member of the graduatmg class of 1944 A ' ' .
