Universify 6-Hollywood 6
A bad break cosf Uni's spirifed eleven an easy
win over a weak Hollywood aggregafion. The- War-
rior ground affack was working smoofhly, buf fwo
unfimely penalfies cosf fhem fhe margin of vicfory.
The fouchdowns for bofh feams were scored in un-
usual fashion, bofh on pass infercepfions. The Sheiks
fallied on a 45 yard fheff and run in fhe second
quarfer. Uni scored in fhe fourfh period when Cap-
fain John Peferson, a sfandouf on defense all affer-
noon, blocked a Hollywood pass, and Lee Blad,
picking if ouf of fhe air, wenf all fhe way. Ofher
oufsfanding performances were furned in by John
Escobar, Jose Uranga, Bernie Nebenzahl, and Carrol
Hansen.
"The Besf Was Yef"
Venice I 3-Uni I2
Playing fheir besf game, fhe I95O Universify
foofball feam was nipped by 'rhe league-champion
Venice Gondoliers, I 3- I 2.
The Indian affack was sparked by fhe brillianf
running of John Escobar, Jose Uranga, Arf Walfon
and Dick Oliva. Nof 'ro be- overlooked was fhe
equally fremendous defensive play by Carroll Han-
sen, Rodgers Dorr, Frank Chabre and fhe "unsung"
heroes of fhe line.
One of fhe mosf specfacular plays of fhe year
occured when Dick Oliva accounfed for a 68 yard
punf.
Our firsf fouchdown was scored on an end-
around play wifh John Escobar packing fhe ball.
The conversion was blocked. Venice scored fheir
fwo fouchdowns by virfue of fwo long pass and run
plays. All-cify end, Leon Clarke, played an excep-
fional game, along wifh Tommy Grimes and Ronnie
Skaggs.
Our ofher fouchdown came in fhe fourfh per-
iod when Escobar again scoofed around his leff end.

fhe second quarfer, fhe Indians gof in sid e fhe
Hamilfon 30 wifh consisfenf ground gains by Jose
Uranga, Jerry Callies, and Wayne Bauer. Gordon
Sausser fhen fhrew a perfecf sfrike fo John Pefer-
son behind fhe foe's defense for six poinfs. During
fhe second half fhere were many pass infercepfions
and an exchange of 'rallies by fhe 'rwo compefifors.
Uni annexed ifs second score on a dynamic 38 yard
run by Jose Uranga.
Our winning sfreak lasfed for buf one game,
however, when we mef fhe powerful Dorsey Dons. . .
Dorsey 20-Uni 0
Led by fhe skillful running of fhe e-nfire Dorsey
backfield, fhe Dons clefeafed a game Uni eleven.
The Warriors received fhe opening kickoff, and on
fhe firsf series of downs, Don Bob Tresville infer-
cepfed a Sausser pass and rambled 25 yards fo
score. Again Uni sfarfed up fhe field, only fo be
fhwarfed by fhe end of fhe firsf half. Going info
'rhe fhird quarfer, Dorsey confrolled play, as Singer,
Holland, and Leanse lugged fhe pigskin fo fhe War-
rior 2, where Lucosfic ripped info fhe end zone. The
fighfing Lucosfic's hard running was fhe main facfor
in fhe Don's fhird six-poinfer. Keeping Uni's spirif
up were: Wayne Baue-r, Dudley Hoover, Jerry Cal-
lies, Dick Oliva, and Gordon Sausser.
Bouncing back from biffer defeafs seemed fo
be habif-forming as we fore info fhe Los Angeles
Romans . . .
Universify I8-Los Ange-les 0
Going info fhe game a seven-poinf underdog,
fhe defermined Warrior feam scored ifs firsf fouch-
down on a perfecf pass from Gordon Sausser fo
John Peferson before mosf of fhefans had seffled
in fheir seafs. The fhird quarfer saw fhe Indians on
fheir way fo fhe Los Angeles goal line. The drive
sfarfed on fhe Universify 40, and wifh brillianf run-
ning by Bernie Nebenzahl and J os e Uranga, cli-
maxed on fhe one, where Sausser pushed if over.
John Escobar was fhe sfand-ouf of fhe fourfh period
wifh his oufsfanding running and scoring of fhe fhird
and final fally. The accurafe punfing of Dick Oliva
was also an imporfanf facfor in fhe vicfory.
Two vicfories in a row would have been foo
much for +hei hof and cold Warrior feam . . .
