WADSWORTH Principal i tr ti The war years of 1942 to i945 saw many drastic changes come to University high school. Carefree activities which have marked campus life in former years took on a serious import. With purpose and zest, boys and girls plunged into the war effort. One by one, classmates and teachers began to leave for the armed services. Yet through the guidance of administration and faculty, University has managed to retain much of the warmth and friendship of past years. With practiced adeptness, the administration handled the problems of acceleration, part-time programs for war work- ers, victory classes, air-raid drills, civilian defense, curtailed teaching and maintenance staff, and the rest. As always, the hand of friendship and the word of good advice guided students in the old friendly way. Mr. Wadsworth's fine character and personal interest have more than once be- friended a new student or helped a boy to select a useful branch of the armed forces. Both vice-principals, the coun- selor and the registrar have wor-ked with individual stu- dents to make their high school years happy and success- ful through adjustment to rules and a wise selection of classes. The constant stream of returning University serv- icemen and women, former students, bears witness to the fact that University high school retains the place it wins in the hearts of all who enter here. After Vice-Principal Raymond Casey 'joined the Seabees, and his successor, Mr. Mann, became principal at jordan, Mr. Ramey was advanced to the post of vice-principal. Mrs. Brooks, former home economics teacher, became counselor when Dr. Lombardi left to take a vice-principalship at San Pedro. Before the Allied armies reduced the threat of enemy attack on the west coast, Uni- versity high school was organized for full protection against any enemy action. Black- out preparations were madeg many students became junior air raid wardens and took civilian defense posts wherever they were able. Throughout the war-crisis years of i942 to l944, the student body, under faculty supervision, did everything possible to aid the war effort. Red Cross drives, the buying of War Bonds and Stamps, paper drives, all were taken in stride and put over with great success by the student body. .t J, if ,W f . - f Q 4 i R c RAMEY Fm-xNcEs c BROOKS EVERETT c STANTON HELEN rvi DARSIE Bffiflsllpvilde Principal Counselor Registrar C-?rls' VicelPrincipal 4 DON BURGESS HELYN CARPENTER W ,LI 5 77:der1OTeS Sealbearer :F denotes Ephebian DOROTHY BURRUSS BARBARA CARR STANLEY ALMOND MARION BLOESER LAURA BURTE' - CLEOTA CHARLESWORTH 6 DANIEL ARIAZ LEAH BOLENDER 'Ii CORA BYLAND PAUL CLAPP IEAN BENEFIEL MARILU BREEN PATRICIA CAHOON I. In September of i944 Miss Katharine Reed succeeded Mrs. Force, who was the sponsor of the newspaper for twelve years. Formerly a Chieftain adviser in '4l and l42, Miss Reed still trains students to pass English A exams. The fall of '43 saw Mr. Elmer King in charge of the printing department. l-le succeeded james Hallock, snowy-haired favorite of long standing. Mr. King met the war-emergency by establishing a girls' printing class which became unusually popular. ln the spring of '45 he was even persuaded to sponsor one of the numerous Tri-Y's. That the Warrior, which has won seven state and national awards, retained its popularity is testified by the largest subscription list in the paper's history. This year and last, photographs by Ralph Hart, lim l-lervey, Ted Lantheaume, and Tom Horning have enlivened its pages. Other members of the editorial staff are Helen Eachus, john Droeger, and john Fagin. janet Martin and Mrs. Dejarnatt pinch-hit as typists before the deadline. For the first time, three Los An- geles City schools took part in the Congressional Church's Bach Festival. University was one of those schools honored by an invitation to participate in this festival which lasts for four days and which has many notables performing. A com- plete Bach Cantata was beautifully sung by the University group. Mrs. Provan, who has just completed her first year at University, teaches girls' glee, mixed chorus, and A Cappella. The orchestra and band are under Mr. Wing. Piano is taught by Mrs. Heaton, and all three teach music appreciation. Over two hundred students from Mrs. Provan's department and fifty-five from Mr. Wing's took part in the Christmas pro- gram. Concerts were given for Emerson and Brentwood schools by Mr. Wing's group. This year, too, a soloist and a brass quartet represented University High in the Southern Cal- ifornia Music Festival held at U. S. C. Combining with the West Los Angeles Community Orchestra, the University or- chestra presented a fine concert Friday, june l. As always, the music department played an important part in both the Cossack and Hawaiian graduation exercises. girls' glee club - spring 1945 gr'-l 4 . I fn . K' w . r f N '3 ln summarizing the results of U,niversity's varsity football squads during the past three years, one would find that the Wilcox-coached elevens have done fairly well in placing a man on the All-City squad in both '42 and '43 and by holding first, second, and third in league standings in the three years. Plac- ing john Simons on the All-City eleven, the '42 aggregation fared through seven out of eight league games to grab Co- Championship honors with the Venice Condoliers. Their only loss was at the hands of the Venetians in an early season tilt, they came back to nip the Oarsmen l3-l2 in the season's finale. ln '43 the local outfit roared through five games with no losses. However, when they met their arch-rivals, the vaunted L. A. Romans ran roughshod over the locals 25-6 to wind the reservationists up in second place. lncidentally, the Warriors did exceptionally well, for they went into every skirmish outweighed from lO to l5 pounds per man. Placing Bob Leonard and Bob Hammond on the All-Western squad, they achieved City recognition with Hammond on the first string as blocking back. Coach Tom Wilcox was very disap- pointed in his '44 outfit. The local squad, having possibilities for rounding into the greatest Warrior eleven and the most outstanding in the Western League circuit, dropped their sec- ond game to a high-spirited, but not' superior, Dorsey team, D. Then came the real heart-breaker. An underdog Fairfax Co- lonial team came through to halt the Warriors in a 6-6 dead- lock. The University Bee eleven, like the Varsity, had a good deal as , A . .si of early-season bad luck, losing to Hamilton, Dorsey, Los An- geles, and Hollywood. Then the reservationists met the Venetians, who gained an early l9-13 half-time score. The local Bees rallied, however, to lick the Condoliers 25-19. ln the season's final game, the lightweight eleven came through in a real thriller, defeating the Fairfax Colonials l4-13. The high-flying Warrior hoop- men dropped only one skirmish to the vaunted L.A. Romans. Playing a freeze- ball game, for the sole purpose of keeping the score down, the Roman five sorely outwitted the amazed local squad as they kept possession of the ball during the majority of the game to eke out a 24-23 win over the spirit-lack- ing Redskins, Benny Lewis, sensational sophomore monogrammer in '42, achieved All-League honors in '43 and '44 with a first string All-City berth, Also in '44, lac-k Stone, the gigantic bulwark of the '45 squad, held the honor of being the first tenth grader to win a first-string All-League berth. l-le fol- lowed this up by manning the same Western League pivot post for three suc- cessive years. Stone, who also received All-City honors in '44 and '45-first- string in 745-was truly the greatest natural athlete ever to attend Univer- sity and will always be remembered for his remarkable basketball career, Along with Stone on the '45 Warrior powerhouse was C-len Abney, towering southpaw hook-shot artist. Abney merited a third-string All-City berth as guard, along with his All-League honors. Bob Keller, spark-plug forward, Bob Richards, defensive mainstay, and lanky, deadeye Dick Bowen completed the first string. The Western League Champs were backed by host of able substitutes: Bruce Christensen, Tom l-lorton, Rodney l-latch, Fred Beck, lerry O'Neal, Chuck Colwell, Bob Wolfe, and capable manager Dave Blanchard. Winning the first Basketball Championship, the stellar local squad set a high mark for future University melonmen to aim at by setting a record for the number of Western League wins in taking the championship. 48 ' basket ball 1945 BEE BASKETBALL S-, - . :H 39 hw ' A ' A me if A + ,Q 1? , ' 1' wrt. fflffl , uf A Q .' 2 V 2 1 3 ' 5 f f, . , iglixg Hx X 4 -5215 - - Q45 I 4 Q Q' A :u.if,1 L 5, ' A ' f x 2141. ,,- COACH IERRY MARVIN University-38 University-44 University-40 University-37 University-47 University-48 University-55 University-62 University-23 University-49 University-46 49 1945 BASKETBALL SCHEDULE . .Hamilton-18 , . . . . .Dorsey-ZO Los Angeles-27 . . .Hollywood-30 . . . .Venice-24 . . . .Fairfax-Z7 . . . .Hamilton-27 ,.....Dorsey-25 Los Angeles-24 . . .Hollywood-20 . . . .Venice-23 D 4 ff' y if H I 2,1 t, gi, Y Jrq 'V I Hx. 5 rf -TQ' -V T. The l943 nine boasted an All-City keystone-sacker in Tommy Peters, and one of the leading pitchers and outfielders in Art Smith, ln the following year, sparked by another ace pitcher, Norbert Smith, but hampered by an inability to bash counters across the platter, the varsity nine finished in fourth place. For his outstanding hurling, Norbert Smith was given a berth on the All-City team. The i945 edition of Coach lVlarvin's squad has not, at press time, played a league game. Again pitching is the strong point of the team. Chick Stewart and Sherwin Schwartz are two of the best southpaws in high school competition. The infield consists of Bob Richards, two- year letterman, on first, Don Stewart, sturdy tenth-grade brother of the pitcher, at the keystone sack, Bill Stumpus, seasoned shortstop, playing his third year of varsity ball, and George l-leap, one-year letterman, at third. With the excep- tion of Stewart, this infield is intact from the l9-44 team. The outfield is the spot where the weakness could be shown, as only Don Morrison returns, but a host of aspirants up from the junior Varsity are fighting for the spots. lvlerv Adelson and Ziggie Zieder, catchers, round out'the squad. iff, T 1945 WARRIOR RAcKETMEN , OUT AT F'R5T 50 base ffm gag - ca junior varsity baseball was abandoned in l943, but Coach joe Hesslein again fielded a j.V. team in l9-44. The season witnessed poor fielding, weak clutch hitting behind average pitching. The team won only one game and finished at the bottom of the Western League. The l9-45 junior Varsity team, before press time, defeated Beverly Hills and St. Mon- ica's in practice trays and anticipates a prosperous campaign. 1944 BASEBALL SCHEDULE University-2 . . . ....................... . . .Hamilton-3 University-l . ....... Best in the Western League, the '43 and '42 track aggre- gations placed second and third respectively in the All-City Finals. Breaking up the seven-year dom- ination of Los Angeles track by the jefferson Demo- crats, King Pins of the Southern League, Univer- sity's i944 tracksters had the honor of placing their name among those of two other schools on the coveted Cityh Cup. Los Angeles is the only other school besides jefferson to win a City Track Cham- pionship. Several records were either broken or tied during the '44 campaign. Craig Dixon, second in City high stioks and fifth in the lows, tied the high hur- dle record of l5s. flatg while Fred Beck, third in i945 VARSITY TRACK SQUAD ff- - V Y H? Dick Burzell, the only track athlete besides Mel Patton to take a first piace in the City Meet, vaulted l2' 9V3 to raise the record a full two inches, while Dov- er again bettered his high jump record to 6' l . Earl Miller's broad jump of Zl' 9lf2 completed the record breakers. One of the greatest disappointments during the '44 season was the upset of the Warrior relay team, which stood far above all others, because of a collision with a Manual Arts sprinter, the relay cup was for- feited in a similar fashion in '43 when Mel Patton came from behind to take a third for the locals. Fremont won both times. Bee tracksters have followed their big brothers, the varsity, in many ways the last two years. Although they dropped two dual meets to Dorsey, the Warrior mid- gets came back twice in the Western League Finals to lick the Dons by good mar- gins, they placed second in their respective events in the City Meet - johnson, l32O Moremen, 660. The an- nual inspection, held May lO, this year, is the event toward which all the activities are pointed during the entire year. The purpose of the inspection, and of the complete train- ing, is to strive for excellence in tield exercises such as drill, manual ot arms, and physical trainingg to develop the abilities ot cadets to lead, give commands, and take orders, to in- spire confidence in boys under the cadet's command by setting an example of excellence in leadership, appearance, and willingness to cooperate, to think with speed and accuracy. Despite the fact that a change in command- ers has become a frequent occurrence in the past three years, the unit has had great suc- cess as an honor group. ln the tirst part of the spring semester, Major james R. During this time a rifle team con- sisting ot Edgar Wellbaum, Bruce Gaston, Scott Stoddard, Russell Ellis, Fred Eastman, Tom Bess, and james Ball received the Blue Devil Competition Trophy tor which all Los Angeles high schools compete. BOI-INE W'43 S'39 A GALLANT WARRICRi Last Thursday afternoon, an historic American family, a grieffstricken nation, and a stunned world lost one of its greatest and most beloved champions of freedom and justice, in the tragic and sudden death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. At a time like this, however, when the entire nation and world is in mourning, words can hardly suffice to express the deep emotional feeling of those who knew him and of those who only heard of him. These latter must include more than half the peoples of the world, for the name of Roosevelt is probably known by more persons on earth than that of any other figure in history. LT. LACK P. WADSWORTH S336 At this early date, it is still too soon for the nation-indeed, the entire world-to realize how great a loss was the passing of its beloved leader and president. In any event, he has become immortal and will be remembered for all time. Both the San Francisco Conference, which he had such a large part in shaping, and the nowfimminent victories in Europe and the Pacific will become lasting monuments to his tireless efforts in building an, endurable peace. Franklin D. Roosevelt gave his life for his countryg he died in the struggle for ultif mate Victory and Peace. It can truly be said of him that he, too, was a warrior, a Gal' lant Warrior, ever fighting and striving for the progress of humanity. BEN DANIELS, April 15, 1945. ilu Memoriam SXSGT. Lauren Army peoples, unite When, someday, Cossacks and Hawaiians, Serbs and Croats, Slavs, Armenians and Turks From the width and breadth of the earth And from its length, Will together band in greater strength, Than they before have done, Men shall again walk tree, out of the shadows-into the sun. The peoples of the earth uniting, will force down their common toe: The Swastika will be swept away in the blood it has caused to flow, The Eagle once more in triumph shall rise- And stars, not bursting bombs, shall lighten war-darkened skies. And peace, not war, shall spread over all th And Brotherhood shall lead the hand of man Re-lighting the Torch of Liberty- Extending the Light ot Freedom. -Anne Lossiett W'4'5 T zu v .ff J ', .,,g,: 5, 3:21 1 if ' Iv. , ':'.
