At this tourment, the boys showed their ability by winning it. As a result, the Cubs presented the student body with a trophy that spoke louder than words. Destrehan, Lutcher, Catholic High, Donaldsonville and Hahnyille were the teams University High matched skill with and beat. The Cubs had in 1939 the best athletic season that has been known at U.H.S., especially was the basketball team successful. t .a gizfa I 3720 eff, Under the skillful supervision of Miss Lane and her capable student teachers, the girls rapidly became more skilled in the athletic activities. Golf, with Mit Mike Donahue ol' L.S.ll. patiently teaching the girls the correct stance and the proper way to hold and swing the club, was the most popu- lar feminine sport. Strange as it may seem, though lllosl of the girls had never touched a golf club, they showed surprising ability. Last of all the class began to learn the dilferent names of clubs and technical terms. The season closed with all the girls pretty well up on golf. The next period was devoted to dancing of three types: tap. ballroom, and folk. The periods were arranged, so that for the last fifteen or twenty minutes, the girls could dance together. This short period was usually devoted to heated ren- ditions of the shag, the latest dance-craze. The folk dances learned were used in the May festival, and were enhanced by costumes appropriate to their origins. Again the periods changed, and the girls bounced out to the volley ball courts. Throwing themselves into the spirit of the thing, the girls grouped them- selves into four teams: The Booinerangsf' The Outlaws, The Amazonsfl and The Dukes. Friendly competition filled the air, and yells flew over the nets with the balls. A tournament was held under the supervision of the student teachers, the Misses Miller and Catlett. The lioonicrangsu were the champions. Thus after a little more folk dancing and a few swimming classes, closed an I outstanding year for girls' sports. THE CUB FoRTY.FlvE
