The University » regent», who usually work quietly and without publicity, setting policies in all phases of I'M oftcralion, were very much in the spotlight this year. Controversy over the sale of Hono- lulu Stadium, of which the school was a major stockholder, the aboli- tion of intercollegiate football, and the delayed appointment of a Direc- tor for the East-West Cultural and Technical Interchange Center made not only the campas but the entire state aware of the fact that the func- tioning of Hawaii's only university is in the hands of a Hoard of nine men: that delay, indecision, or error on their part would harm the Uni- versity just a their judicious action would encourage its growth. The sale of the Stadium last year, and the sensation-causing abolition of football in January were both accom- panied by confusion and protest that led Governor Quinn to appoint an entirely new board in March. The Governor slated that public confi- dence in the then existing board had been shaken,” whether justifiably or not. The new regents, appointed accord- ing to reapporlionment stipulations, took office in March and iiegan investigation of the Center Director problem. «
