't wig' if I r -- M, One of the most famous student fighters of the twenties and ertainly the most famous of them in later times was Robert Toombs I-Ie entered the University in 1824 bold vigorous large of build and full of life fresh from a plantation and plantation ways It took him only a short time to find out that the rules were entirely too many and senseless For almost three years Toombs had been adding to the strain and stress of faculty wrath and then the crash came as the first resolution of the new year 1828 the professors dismissed Toombs and in reply to his letter begging reinstatement entered the final verdict January 2 1828 that the faculty could do noth ing more in his case. Toombs departed, but there has grown up a wealth of legends concerning his mighty deeds - how he stayed around until com- mencement Qfrom January to August was a rather long waitj, and then, with burning oratory, drew multitudes out of the chapel and away from the official program to a great oak tree near by. As proof of the legend the tree was ever afterwards called the Toombs Oak - until one day lightning struck the tree and killed it, and what could be more miraculous than the fact that Toombs had died the very moment before the tree was shattered! sf, 'P i -Q' WC V X Martha Lumpkin House Martha Lumpkin gave her house and the land surrounding it to the University with a stipulatlon in the deed that if the house were ever torn down, the land surrounding it would revert to the heirs of her estate. The house was built in 1842 by her father who was Governor of Georgia. Confederate Constitution The University owns the original Confederate Consti tution which consists of six pieces of parchment paper pasted together and is over twelve feet long. It was copied by a scribe and signed by all representatives on March 9, 1861. It was purchased by the University from Mrs. Durent and is housed in the library.
