Coach J. B. Whitworth . . . We called you back when skies took on their darkest hue, Remembering the past when all our days were bright. Confident your dauntless spirit would shine through, And serui another juggernaut into the fight. You came home wearing that same old smile. That hard knocks and fickle fate could never dim. With no alibi or whimper, all the while. Accepting fortune ' s decree — however grim. Yes, you came back; and so did we. For now the Red and Black began to roll. With the old firm of Butts and Whitworth, there to see. That a bunch of battling Bulldogs reached their goal. Then autumn afternoons were short — that once were long. As our banner waved once more atop the pole, And Glory to Old Georgia ' was no longer just a song. But a hymn in praise of champions, as of old. Now, you are gone and silence sits upon Ag Hill, As spring once more comes on in green. Your booming voice forever still. Your flashing smile no longer seen. Your boys will never cease to miss. Their coach — their counselor — their friend, A man whose creed was simply this. To never quit until the end. But in our loss, one thing we still retain. On whatever hard fought field the future holds. We know your flaming spirit will remain. To remind us that a champion never folds. And so we say farewell, and on our part we find it hard the proper words to say, As tve salute you, whose courage and great heart, made you a champion, all the way. Harold W. Walker

INTRODUCTION As we mark the 100th anniversary of the War Between the States, the 1961 PANDORA Staff feels that this historical conflict has given us high ideals to which we must strive. Those who took part in the war, above all else, had that elusive hut noble quality — a sense of dedication, of commitment to an ideal. That generation was conceptually involved in a self-sacrificing action in behalf of a deeply held belief. The cover of this yearns PANDORA recalls the emotions and ideals of the world of 1861. Between the covers we present our world of today, remote from cavalry raids and hoopskirts, but vitally alive with a commitment and positive purpose like that which was a part of the conflict one hundred years ago. This heritage of sacrifice and devotion to duty is exemplified with great variety in the complexities of our campus life by . . .
