Only the clang of an occasional fire-truck, the clatter of a wob- bly-wheeled mule-drawn dray disturbed her reverie. None the less in Rising Fawn and l-la- hira the tow-headed scion of many a sturdy family was packing his grip, fingering in his pocket a thin roll of bills that would open the gates of knowledge. College was his goal where football made the fall a frenzied dream, where girls were lovely, and where now 34 then one garnered facts from co-op purchased books. Northward 84 westward young men were pack- ing forthe long trek south to winter in a pleas- ant clime where college fees were not too steep for a depression-flattened purse, 81 knowledge was dispensed by pleasant gentle- men in dreamy sing-song. Merchants back in Athens, roused from their torpor, anticipated sales. .Cobwebs were brushed from cash drawers, windows be- decked in garments designed to catch the collegiate eye. IN ptmw-xrlom HE 1933 PANDORA is themeless. For the first time in years no catch-all such as the Old South, The Future University or the like has been resorted to as a unifying agent for the book. Instead it has been felt that the school year 1932-1933 is itself worthy of most careful portrayal and can itself supply an abundance of con- nective material. Symbolic of University reorganization, the PANDORA has undergone a rearrangement and this year appears in altered form. ln short, an effort has been made to avoid the Uannual stereotype. The undesirable sameness of most annuals, greatly lessening their effectiveness, has been eliminated wherever possible. The cover symbolizes the modern PANDORA opening her box from which rises, however, a greatly altered contents. PANDORA to-day attempts to reveal the real nature of the vibrant 1933 University of Georgia, active, pulsating, springing to new life. She lifts the lid, leads forth the truth, the beauty of an institution reborn. The old arrangement of the subject matter into 'fdivisionsl' and Hsub- divisions has been discarded. A reference to the preceding page will show that this has been replaced by arranging the material chronologically. Certain broad classihcations into sections were unavoidable, but these sections have been arranged chronologically from the front of the book to the back, illustrating the spotlight of student interest shifting from one topic to another. lt will be noted also that there are three feature sections, one at the first of the book indicating the beginning of school, one near the middle, reviewing the year, and one near the last, illustrating the close of school. Besides attempting to make the book more interesting, an effort has been made to make it more useful. For the Hrst time in the history of the University, every student, or practically every student has his picture in the PANDORA. Thus the 1933 PANDORA probably contains as many individual portraits as any annual in the country. To act as a guide to the various pictures of these approximately 2200 people, an index has been added-another new feature. We hope the 1933 PANDURA will represent the modernity of the pres- ent University of Georgia, that its merger with the Crystal of G. S. T. C. whose pictures and organizations appear side by side with those of Franklin College SL the College of Agriculture will be indicative of closer harmony between the units of the University system. If the 1933 PANDORA is distinctively different from its predecessors we will be gratified. lf, in addition, it is better, we will be delighted.

Q, iw New finery bedecked the physical being of the old lady while well chosen tonics awak- ened new lite within. Feverishly hammering, laying brick, setting stone, artisans labored in mid-campus com- pleting with sure haste Harold Hirsch Hall, new law building, home of Alexander King Memorial Library, a devil's food cake in red brick, white concrete. Finest student housing system in the South, Old home of Georgia's Law School, passed to Department of Personnel and Publicity. rose Joe E. Brown Dormitory, squatty 8: ramb- ling, on Lumpkin street. Colored laboring gangs shuffling 8r slow, strove with mattock, pick, shovel, paint brush, driven by Yardman Dudley's whiplash tongue. Result: trowsy grassplots lay neatly barbered, sooted walls gleamed withgwhitewash. Thus the setting, internal, external, in which an old University, at one hundred thirty-two, took on new life, moved into taster tempo.
