LINC 1979 University of Evansville Contents Activities 9 Advertising 130 Organizations 138 Seniors 159 Greeks 183 Faculty 199 Dorms 209 Edited by Mark Kevin Myers Cover by Steven J. Hipfel UNIVERSITY OF EVANSViLLE uBRARlES Above, Barefoot snow running — Tom Powell and Rick Stucky College Life The purpose of the yearbook is to chronicle the events of an entire year. It is impossible to do this perfectly, yet we on the staff hope you will feel our work is, at least, adaquate. Many ask why the book is called The LinC, It was explained best by Wahnita Delong in this poem she wrote for the first LinC in 1922: Lin stands for Lincoln, the avenue wide On which fronts the campus, the field of our pride. C means not only the College we praise — The school we will love throughout all our days — But Clifford, the father, a true pioneer Who blazed out the way with a vision clear. L in C read aright. Life in College appears, Love in College translate it, if that suits your years. But though C stands for College and Culture, ' till true, ' Tis the first part of City, Community, too; And while we LinC up each year to the past. Forging a chain that will hold us all fast, We mean to LinC, also, our life here in school To life in the world — through opposed to all rule — That we may give freely of our very best To the City which touches our doors on the west, And that it in its turn may teach us to know How to best serve our fellows as through life we go. Thus of whatever phase of our College we think. It is all to be found in one word — the LinC. I ted God Save the Queen Marie Bussing flashes a winning smile after being crowned Home- coming queen. Fans. 1979 Basketball Homecoming February 3, 1979 was the climatic day of UE Winter Weekend boasting a large selection of activities vying for student participants. The big loser v as the second annual All-Campus Snow Sculpting Contest: no one showed up despite a nice snowfall the night before. If the campus community was not quite in the mood for morning activity it must have been because it was getting ready for a little Saturday Night Fever . Roberts Stadium was packed to the hilt with enthusiasm that evening as the Purple Aces crossed swords with Xavier, who the Aces had trounced earlier in the season. Halftime was a show of pagentry featuring the Acettes and a presentation of the Homecoming Court headed by Mark Gillespie of Phi Kappa Tau as Bache- lor of the Year. The 1979 Queen was Cindy Clipp of Hughes Hall, crowned by the last Queen, Liz Hyde from 1977. Runners-up were Tim Tyler of Hale Hall and Phi Mu ' s Julie Coombs. The Aces lost the game to the revenge minded Xaviers. The 74-60 score is not indicative of the tough game the Aces played for their faithful fans. Clockwise from above: Fans show their feelings; Queen Cindy Chpp and Bachelor of the Year Mark Gillespie; Aces take the couxt; Homecoming run- ners-up Julie Coombs and Tim Tyler; Ace Purple does sdhie PR work on the referee; Scott Kelley; The cheerleaders do some fancy pryamid building. Students Move Into Campus Life In September IJE greeted a lot of familiar faces and quite a few new ones as students returned, their cars so laiden down one wondered if shock absorbers would ever be the same. Box after box of the sta- ples of 20th Century life were dragged up flights of stairs that seemed much higher than in the Spring: Radios, curling irons, hot plates, hot dog cook- ers, popcorn poppers, electric toothbrushes, televisions, ster- eos, tennis racquets, calcula- tors. Monopoly, bicycles, base- ball bats, frisbees, cards, the sacred Playboy collection, plants, old easychairs, carpets, albums and tapes ranging from Kiss to John Denver, the global power game Risk, and multiple other expensive, indispensable items. Mary Bergdolt (right) enjoys it in spite of the load. L HARPER DINING CENTER Party Fever Animal House was just the beginning. Fun for the individual, the moving force of the Seventies, has brought its wildness to just about everybody, showing us the ME decade will still be here in the Eighties. Clockwise from below: a few Star Wars extras; Dave Contreras and Greg Holland— quite a party; a spirited group of very happy Zetas; and Roger Miller (seated), Denny Price and Bernie Mackell at the Chi Halloween Party. The First Annual Hale-Hughes Halloween Panty Raid was another big hit. 19 Sorority Pledging The gods of Mount Olympus smiled upon the Greek sorori- ties of the University of Evans- ville. This fall they were again pledging young women into the Greek way of living. The uncommitted women of the campus attended parties and get acquainted meetings to help decide if they should pledge and if so, which soror- ity was the best suited to their needs. The Gods be praised! 20 21 Formal Pledging All hail Dionysus! After a lively season of rush parties the hour of decision arrived. To pledge or not to pledge, that was the ques- tion. Whether tis nobler to embark on the course of fraternal living or to remain a member of the brotherhood of independence. Once again UE men made their decisions, and those v ho pledged av aited the night v hen they would know if they were accepted. The frats made their selections and the rest is UE history. Lambda Chi Alpha accepted the following: Dennis Barley, Carl Bellair, Terry Cannon, Darren Coltrane, Keith Dickens, Doug Dilk, Mike Ernstes, Jay Farmer, Vince Glunt, Don Hartig, Steve Holland, Dave Johnson, Gary Johnson, Keith Kinnaird, Frank Kissel, Ed Lechner, John Owens, Jim Perkins, Kevin Polkinghorn, Jim Potthast, Denny Price, Dave Provost, Tom Rhind, Mark Rice, Gib Riffle, Dave Rivers, Terry Russell, Craig Savage, Ken Smith, Ray Streight, Scott Ward, Brad Williams, Steve Wright. Soccer The soccer Aces set several new records in their second season in Divi- sion I play. Among the new records was the longest, winning streak of 11 games, most goals scored (53), most shutouts (4), and least goals allowed (22). In addi- tion a new record for most wins cata- pulted the Aces to a 13-6 season. Coach Bob Gaudin said that the Aces must have been the best 13-6 team in the country. The coach seems to have been proven right as the Aces moved to tie for the 20th spot in the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America poll. Leading the Aces attack was Papa Jobe who was leading scorer and assists; he made the second team in the All-Midwest squad, was selected for the Senior Soccer Bowl, and a candi- date for Ail-American. The rest of ' the squad proved themselves as well on the field and they were looking forward as an improved team to do battle with some top-notched teams. Among the highlights was the home game against number one ranked lU at Bosse Field that brought around 5000 Evansville fans, a new attendance record, proving the increasing popular- ity of socccer in Evansville. lU won by a score of 1-0 though UE held the line and several times came close to scoring. The highlights did not end with the reg- ular season play because Papa Jobe went to the Senior Bowl and was named Most Valuable Player for scoring 2 goals in under two minutes to give his team a 4-3 victory. Coach John Moses was reported to have stated he intended to turn that mark around next year with seven wins. The Aces will return next year with twenty veteran seniors including the Scott combo of Charley Scott and Scott Topczewski. Scott led the team with 28 receptions for 306 yards. Also returning are Courtney Watt, Chris Loser, Greg Holland, Ray Littleton, all middle line backers. How- ever, the loses will be felt as well; Rory Hennings with the longest reception of 72 yards and most TD passes (2); Jac- ques Williams, the longest run- ning back with 5TDs in a sin- gle game and who made a sec- ond team All-Conference; Esley McClung at defensive end; Linebackers Scott Barn- hill and defensive middle guard Tom Halford. Though the loses are going to be felt, Moses will have a basically veteran team that will be look- ing for revenge like mysterious field goals at the Homecoming game. The team has been rebuilding for the past few years and now it ' s time to move on to bigger and better things. 30 First Row: Randy Metcalfe, Ron Gerhardt, Scott Barnhill, Bernie Mackell, Steve Drndak, Tom Halford, Dave Wint, Jim Nalley Jacques Williams, Esley McClung, Larry Woods. BAND The UE marching Aces struck up a lively song and marched their way into another smash season of halftime entertain- ment. There were long hours of hard rehearsal behind each of the impressive perform- ances as drum major Art Adye (right) can attest to. The time and patience needed for such a large group to become a single, interacting unit is hard for one not acquainted with band operations to fathom. Yet, they found the time to perform in the West Side Nut Club Parade. UE has something to be proud of. 34 1 Hale Hall ' s Annual Turkey Run What ' s more fun than a lawn party? President Dr. Graves presided over the homecoming week- end ceremony in which many notables, including Evansille Mayor Russell Lloyd, deliv- ered words of Appreciation to the university for its contin- uing contributions to the com- munity. The wing is part of the universities Phase II growth objectives for the years 1977- 1981. The wing houses class- rooms, lecture halls, faculty offices and laboratories. Queen Victoria had died and her world was dying too. The United States was an eco- nomic rival of Europe and was exerting an increasing amount of influence in world affairs. Russia lost a war to Japan becoming the first European nation to lose a war to a non-Euro- pean enemy. The automobile was coming into use and Wright brothers had given man flight. Einstein, Freud and Jung were formulating pos- tulates that would change the course of human thought, and the actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell lit a cigarette in the Plaza Hotel. The last rem- nants of real aristocracy were on the verge of being swept away forever as the mass disillu- sionment of WWI clouded the horizon. Yet many were not paying notice to the signs; The good people continued their lives as they always had with no thought for the future. This musical deals with such people. Fredrik is a prosperous lawyer somewhat baffled and buffeted by mid- dle age. Widowed, he takes as his bride Anne, an eighteen year old flower who is not quite ready, after eleven months of marriage, to be deflow- ered. The maid Petra, believing that sex is an act rather than a word, toys with the affections of Fredrick ' s son Henrik who suffers from post- adolescent puritanical guih and an unholy crush on his new stepmother. In frustration Fredrik looks up his ex-mistress, a popular actress named Desiree Armfeldt. Unfortunately, they run into her current love, Carl Magnus, a vain, conceited soldier who feels his wife Charlotte and his mistress should be equal paragons of fidelity. Then the entire entourage is invited for a weekend at the countr y estate of Desiree ' s mother, Madame Armfeldt, an armorous relic of the King of the Belgians. Fredrik meets Fredrika, his love child by Desiree, although he does not know who she is. There are three great moments in the play: when the maid Malta sings that she must accept life without happiness; when Desi- ree and Fredrik realize they have wasted too many precious years as she sings Send in the Clowns ; and when Madame Armfeldt, symbol of the passing age, dies as the sunsets. Memorial To everything there is a season ... a time to mourn . . . And so we gathered to remember those who died at Dress Regional Airport last December 13th. Our basketball team has always been a great part of us, and losing them left a void in our lives. We all were changed by that shocking sting of reality. Now ours has been filled, in one way or another, but we won ' t forget what they meant to us. 4 pi ' 4r Si RBI tiTOiiaiBilIg rolaBiiliiKWi iTd ifcl til I iirfi ■iiMU via BmnraM aifa.t;Mif:inii imaijiRO] 44 45 i First Row: Brad Laufer, Mike Ernstes, lim Mills, Scott Murray, Dave Contreras, Franzy Fleck. Wrestling The Evansville grapplers closed their season at a 4-4 mark in the Heartland Conference. Coach Par- ker felt his team finished where he expected them to in the confer- ence. The guys finished third in the Heartland Conference Champion- ship and then went on to finish thirteenth out of fourteen in the NCAA Midwest regionals. Senior Dave Contreras (142 pounds) was runner-up in the Heartland Cham- pionship and the only team mem- ber to overcome a first round loss and go on the place fourth in his class in the Midwest Regionals. U-Sing a Big Success Sigma Alpha Iota sponsored this year ' s produc- tion of the University Sing, one of the campus ' more popular traditional activities. Groups from all over campus gather to demonstrate the refined musical skills of their members that might not otherwise be exposed to public scru- tiny. The winner of the event this year was a charming group of Phi Kappa Tau ' s best croon- ers. The PKT performance is immortalized below during their tribute to the frollicing 1920s. Others performing in the competition included Cindy VVeightman who is shown at the left and a happy bunch of singers hailing from Hughes Hall (bottom). 48 Pops Concert PMA-SAI held their tenth annual Pops Concert in ShankUn Theatre on December 8, 9 and 10 of 1978. The two music organizations put on the show which bathed the UE community with tones and notes of ecstacy. All procedes from this yearly event are donated to the Romayne Benedict — Weseley Shepard Scholarship Funds. JUMPERS by Tom Stoppard Jumpers is a high-spirited comedy, a mur- der myster of no great mystery, and a seri- ous debate on morality, certainty, and God in which British playwright Tom Stoppard gives us a ride on a philosophical roller- coaster. The play opens with a political rally for the victorious Radical Liberals who don ' t believe in God and campaigned on the philosophy every man should do as he pleases. Their leader is Sir Archibald Jumper, dean of a British university. As the evening progresses: once famous pop singer Dorothy Moore failed an attempted come- back; a secretary swings from a chandelier; and the Jumpers appear. They are the more philosophical members of the British uni- versity ' s gymnastics team and the more gymnastic members of the university ' s phi- losophy department. An engine failure on a two-man British spacecraft causes a lunar brawl (televised no less) after which the captain leaves his fellow astronaut to die alone on the moon. Back on earth one of the Jumpers is murdered, and the body is hung on the back of Dotty ' s bedroom door through which Archie soon enters to con- tinue their affair. Then Inspector Bones from Scotland Yard arrives to investigate. In the midst of all this is the absent-minded George Moore, Dotty ' s husband, a professor of moral philosophy who spends most of his time preparing for a lecture on the moral absolutes of beauty, goodness, and God, none of which the Radical Liberals believe in. In the climatic sequence at Westminster Abbey Clegthorpe, the new Archbishop of Canterbury, is murdered for deciding to belive in God, and all the plays elements come together in an explosion of irresolute revelation. Dr. Dudly Thomas directed the play with special Assistence from gymnas- tics coach Dan Mantion. This year ' s festivities w ere on Friday February 2, 1979 and begin at the Florida Room of the Exec- utive Inn. Approximately four hundred people attended the dinner there. Following roast beef and chicken plus a few drinks of dubious origin, the crowd wiped out over the rauchy good humor of the comedy duo of Edmonds and Curly. The party then moved across the street to the Gold Room of Vanderburgh Auditorium for dancing to the music of Malanchi. Some of the happy participants include. Coach Stahl was named Conference coach of the year for the Heartland Conference. The Aqua Aces took the Heartland Conference crown with an impressive showing. The Aces chalked up several varsity and conference records this year. The Aqua men are tops now and only one is a graduating senior, all of the nucleas to power the Aqua Lung is in 13 Fresh- men and 8 Sophomores, all returning next year. The sum- mation of the season can be pinned to the Heartland Con- ference Meet where 61 all-time best of 69 possible perform- ances were stroked out by the Aces. The girls were only in the second year of AIAVV level competition and were just filling their lungs to get used to the water. However, six girls made it to the region- als where they placed fifth- eenth out of twenty-two teams. Coach Winstead is looking for divers for next year as this was the major weak spot in the team. One outstanding fresh- man that set eight individual records, was member to four relay teams to set marks, and qualified for eight regional events was Mona Seaman. 56 Basketball The UE Purple Aces com- pleted their basketball season at a 13-16 mark, which is very impressive considering it was a building year. The year has been tiring on Coach Walters who is already on the recruit- ing road. Walters doesn ' t lose any players to the diploma dis- ease and will have an experi- enced, more relaxed team next year. A short word of praise should be given to the Evans- ville merchants, the 100,000 fans, and the rest of the com- munity that supported the Pur- ple Aces in this first full season of Division 1 play. We hope they will continue to do so in the years to come. Though Walters was enticed by bigger schools, he feels comfortable and happy here in little ole Evansville. The bright, young coach has proved his prowess to be able to take several good athletes, throw them together overnight and come up with 13 wins in one year. Among the year ' s highlights was the four point difference and close game against the Indiana State Sycamores (the ones that came to be an over- night legend and almost clenched the NCAA title). Also Marquette ' s Coach Al McGuire was guest speaker at the first annual basketball spring banquet this year. Finally but not least all of the players should be recognized for outstanding achievement at one point or nother through- out the season. A final note should go something like this: Let ' s mop a next year. 58 Clockwise from Below: the 1978-79 Aces; Coach Walters and Assist. In recognition of this fact the Purple Pride Gang was launched in an effort to funnel the enthusiasm into useful and produc- tive channels. Wendy ' s Old Fashioned Ham- burgers and Pepsi both agreed to back the organ- ization; the most successful membership drive in UE history was underway. More than twelve hundred students joined the booster club as it began a series of pep assemblies which featured Wendy ' s Chili (also served free after after each homegame win). Between Aces visors and Purple Pride Fever T-shirts the pride just can ' t be stopped. Top Left: Corey Hamilton (sitting), Dave Kratzer, Coach Walters, and Henry Davis joined many others attending the Pride organizational meeting. 62 63 d Whether in Evansville or Hawaii the Aces Are Ours 65 r Life . . . 68 69 125th Anniversary February 12, 1979 was the day UE celebrated its 125th anniversary with a convoca- tion at the Vanderburgh Audi- torium. The University was founded February 10, 1854 by John C. Moore as Moores Hill Male and Female Collegiate Institute in Dearborn County. The school developed finan- cial problems early in this cen- tury which became insur- mountable when one of the main buildings burned in 1915. Evansville was chosen as a relocation site because of com- munity support and the fact that it was the only major city in the state without a four year college within a fifty mile radius. Evansville College was incorporated on February 17, 1919. The College has enjoyed continuous growth since then, becoming the University of Evansville on February 17, 1967, containing four colleges and five schools and the Har- laxton campus in England. The speaker at the Founders Day convocation was Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, Presi- dent of the University of Notre Dame. His speech was entitled The Challenge of Service and dealt with four areas important to Christian educa- tion: teaching students to be compassionate, solving the world food shortage, the importance of commitment to the world, and service to the Lord. Following his speech Hesburgh received an honor- ary Doctorate of Law degree from UE ' s President Dr. Wal- lace B. Graves. The audience of over 300 was composed mostly of UE faculty and Evansville citizens. Few stu- dents attended though classes were canceled, choosing to spend the time otherwise. 70 71 Cast Music Pupil Tailor Apprentice — Ross Webb Female Singer — Gary McCool Music Master Dancer — Brian Stansifer Dance Master Dancer — Christopher Williams Dancer Tailor Apprentice — James Donegan Dancer Tailor Apprentice Mufti — Aaron Cabell Dancer — Dancer — Lacky Dancer — Lacky — Monsieur Jourdain — Fencing Master Dancer — Philosophy Master Dancer — Merchant Tailor — Nicole — Madame Jourdain — Dorante — Cleonte— Covielle — Lucile — Dorimene — Male Singer — Nancy Leomker Kathie Dupont Tony French Andy Souders Norman Brandenstein Gene Frank Christopher Dudley Judson McLean Nancy Wagner Cheryl Heath Walter Klimec Thomas Kendall Kim Bitz Rebecca Klinger Donna Deicken Rob Koewler 72 THE WOULD- BE GENTLEMAN Moliere Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known as Moliere, was the leader of the La Troupe du Roi during the reign of the Sun King Louis XIV of France enjoying the King ' s special patronage. During the fall of 1669 the King received a Turkish envoy named Suleiman Agha at the lavish new palace at Versailles. Louis, enthroned in splen- dor, wore a suit embroidered with fourteen mil- lion livres ' worth of di amonds, roughly $333,333 today. But Suleiman was angry because he had been kept waiting a long time and his expression seemed to say all Turks were fourteen million livres worth of diamonds. Louis felt highly insulted and encouraged his courtiers to ridicule the Turks for the next year. It was during this period that Louis commanded Moliere and his composer friend Jean-Baptiste Lully to compose a comedy portraying Turks in a rather poor light. The result of their labors was the ever-well- received The Would-Be Gentleman which revolves around the aspirations of a French bourgeoise to become a gentlemen. Smattered with singing, dancing, laughing, and romancing it was directed this Spring by UET ' s guest artist Lynn Thomson. The aspiring middle-class Frenchman is the pompous Monsieur Jourdain. In his vain attempts to reach the upper-classes Jourdain hires instructors in music, dancing, fencing, and philosophy to master the art of refinement. He lets himself be used as a bank account by the footloose Count Dorante, who lives far beyond his means, in the hopes of being introduced to the beautiful Countess Dormiene. Madame Jourdain, her daughter Lucile, and the outspoken maid Nicole dislike Jourdain ' s silly vanity and frivilous spending and tell him so. They also dislike his disapproval of Lucile ' s suitor Cleonte who is not a gentlemen either. Through a clever scheme of Turkish disguises Cleonte ' s servant Covielle tricks Jourdain into giving Lucile to Cleonte while winning Nicole for himself as a troop of Turks turn the house into a festive riot. Beth North was choreographer and UE math teacher Clark Kimberling com- posed the music. Photos by Nancy Beverly. AOP Basketball Marathon 1979 The sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi sponsored their annual Basketball Marathon on St. Patrick ' s Day this year, Saturday March 17, 1979. With 45 teams participating the sorority raised between $400-$500 for the National Arthritis Association. The money came from a $5 entry fee, a bake sale, and raffle tickets for prizes donated by local businessmen. Harlaxton Manor, located in Lincoln- shire just outside of Grantham, England, was given to the University by an alumnus. Dr. Wil- liam L. Ridgeway of San Francisco, a member of the UE Board of Trustees, purchased the Manor from the Trustees of the Society of Jesus (Jesu- its). With the Manor comes 100 acres of sur- rounding grounds. President Graves said the University was enormously grateful while remarking that Harlaxton would continue to benefit students on into the future. Hundreds have enjoyed the experience of studying abroad at Harlaxton. The opportunity to live there for up to a year is the chance of a lifetime. The three day weekends allow for extensive traveling in England and Scotland and many find time to explore the Continent. It is a chance to find the roots of America and oneself. It has been said by cosmopolitans that Ameri- cans are only transplanted Europeans; it is fasci- nating to see firsthand the cities, universities and battlefields where events affected the develop- ment of the unique American character and to see how similar the unique is to its European progenitors. She has delighted them in such plays as Godspell, Company, Romeo and Juliet, Brigadoon, Sherlock Holmes, The Man of La Mancha, and The Cherry Orchard. This season began as its predecessors, with a powerful and moving work: this time A Little Night Music (see pages 38 and 39) with Sharon Rolf playing the lead role as Desiree Armfeldt. The audiences were enchanted with her rendition of Send in the Clowns. Thus the course of events led her to perform the song and a comedy scene in the divisional level competition of the American College Theatre Festival at Ohio ' s Bowling Green State University. She won. The fourth UET student to win at that level in six years, Sharon received a $500 scholarship and advanced into the national competition for the coveted Irene Ryan Award. In late April the stage was set at Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She was later quoted as saying, I was really calm while performing. I was very satis- fied with the performance. Richard Barletta, Rolf ' s partner, said, Honestly, we didn ' t care who won the Irene Ryan at the time because we feh so good about the scene. But Sharon had won. The pride of Evansville had become the best in the nation. Sharon contributed the major part of her success to UE Drama Department ' s John David Lutz: John David Lutz deserves at least 50 percent of that award. Everything that I was complimented on was something he gave me to do. Mark Hatfield of the Music Depart- ment was also praised for his handling of musi- cal problems. Sharon received $2000 from the American Theatre Festival and what she calls an opportunity card in the game of life. The future is bright for Sharon Rolf. Previous win- ners have been offered scholarships. Becky Guy, a UE alumnus who won the award several years ago, was offered an education at the Juliard School for Actors. This achievement is not only good for Sharon, but it helps firmly establish the University of Evansville as a top notch drama school. 96 Hitman Spring Week got under way this year with the help of Neuman Center ' s Hitman. For a small fee any teacher or administrator will be shot — with water. The event made quite a splash. 97 Honors Night The University honored its own at the annual Honors Night program April 23, 1979 in Wheeler Concert Center. Over 100 scholarships and certificates are given each year. I 98 Trivia Quiz The Seventh Annual Alpha Lambda Delta Trivia Quiz was held on Wednesday April 25, 1979 as one of Spring Week ' s most popular events. A major upset occurred w hen Phi Kappa Tau, the champ for five years, finished third. First place was taken by Mortar Board ' s Lynn Foshee and Gabe Reising, second by Roland Phillips and Mark Kopinski of WUEV. Phi Taus were defended by last year ' s champion team of Kent Parr and Bob Mackey (contestants named as shown at right). 100 Spring Day Lincoln State Park and Spring Day were made for each other. April 27th saw an explosion of activity there, everything from baseball to tromping through the woods. Following a meal catered by Harpers which proved that every- thing tastes better outdoors Playfair made its UE debut. Who would have thought running under parachutes could be fun? With the help of strange liquids of dubious origins the day was rolling fine when the rain struck. The day was cut short but still left memories for everyone including Dave Miller and Pat Bales (at right). 102 105 { Little 39 Bike Race Chi Omega pedaled to their fourth consecutive Little 39 win in a tight race. Golden Hearts finished second for the third year in a row with the Phi Mu ' s in third. Both had held the lead for a time. Susan Jacobi coached the Chi Ome- gas: Cindy Stofleth, Patty Spri- gler, Diana Cabrera, and Rita Hagedorn. Phi Mu Kathi Flu- cus joined Stofleth, Sprigler, and Cabrera to make the all- star team. 106 107 Big 39 Bike Race April 28, 1979 was c loudy, windy, and cold — 45 degrees in fact. But the day will shine in the memory of Sigma Phi Epsilon because it brought them first and second places in the Big 39 Bike Race for the third consecutive year. Sig Ep 1 won with a four lap lead in 119 minutes 25 seconds. Their coach, Brian Lentz, had admitted it wasn ' t going to be easy and it wasn ' t. There was fierce competition from the TKEs and Sig Ep II, the second place winner. TKE 1 was third. Chris Stofleth, Jeff Ulrich, Matt Bielfeld, and Mike Slider were the Sig Ep 1 team. Stofleth, Bielfeld, and Slider were selected for the all-star team with TKE ' s Gary Ruble. 109 THE CRUCIBLE A Play By Arthur Miller Cast of Characters Betty Parris llene Kwitny Rev. Shanklin Theatre ' s fourth and final presentation of the year was Arthur Miller ' s contemporary clas- sic The Crucible. The large crowds which saw the play found what appeared to be a drama of the witch trials and hangings of Puritanical Salem in 1692, but there is more to this play. Parallels are drawn between that time ' s perversions of justice and those of Senator Joe McCarthy and his House Un-American Activities Committee. The hypocrisy and hatred that encompassed Salem village are a true mirror of the shabby witch hunt of McCarthy in 1953 when this work was first presented. The Crucible depicts a society that has lost control of itself in a whirlwind of lies and silly accusations which turn even the good and pious against one another. They become the victims of public fear. John and Elizabeth Proctor are two such people who experience the full course of justice : suspicion, arrest, mock trial, and a final chance for John to save his life by confessing to a lie. John refuses to compromise his word and dies on the gallows. John and Elizabeth had been accused by Abigail Wil- liams, his former lover who was still jealous. Aided by her friend Mary Warren, Abigail meddled in witchcraft beneath the Rev. Samuel Parris ' nose. The Rev. John Hale, an expert on witchcraft, is sent for as things get out of hand. Eventually Deputy-Governor Danforth arrived to hold trials and convict the citizens, in the true spirit of McCarthy. The greatest horrors of both witch hunts were the accept- ance of an accusation as proof of guilt and bias against any one who defended the accused. This play has a powerful message calling all people to resist tyranny and blind injustice. Tennis Tennis had a great season under a new coach, Paul Jen- sen. One reason is freshman Dean Hall. At this spring ' s Heartland Conference Cham- pionships he won the No. 1 singles title and Most Valuable Player honors. In the final he defeated Jeff West of Indiana Central 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. He is the first UE conference singles champion since Tim Unver- zagt in 1969. Freshman Chris Wolfe also shined at the con- ference. Chris placed fourth in the No. 6 singles. Residence Hall Council Bingo RHC Bingo is fun for everyone. Free bingo with prizes up for grabs drew a crowd at Harpers for the April 22nd event. RHC President Jim Bailey called numbers leaving winners very happy. 116 117 123 Graduation Threatening skies moved UE ' s 121st Com- mencement to Roberts Stadium where 930 graduates received their degrees from Presi- dent Wallace Graves. The speaker was Ralph E. Bailey, a Lynnville native who recently became chairman and chief execu- tive of the Continental Oil Company, the nation ' s eighteenth largest industrial corpo- ration. Bailey addressed himself to Ameri- ca ' s energy problem. Saying the nation ' s future was bright if we learn a risk-free society is not possible, he warned of the need for a reasonable balance between environmental concerns and economic needs. Nancy Croker of Indianapolis, a nursing student, won the Mable Dillingham Award for the outstanding female senior. The Guthrie May Award for outstanding male senior was presented to pre-law stu- dent Steven Hipfel of Cincinnati. The Year In Review Pope Paul VI died at the age of 80. Angel Flight was founded at UE with twenty members in 1957 as the Donald F. Wright Flight and had fifty members at his height. The Flight acted as Area Headquarters in 1961, 1973, and 1975. In 1976 Evansville hosted a Tri-Area Conclave and bid at National Conclave for the National Head- quarters for the following year: a position held for two years. The Angels have always worked with Arnolds on various service projects: collecting canned goods for Thanksgiving Baskets, Corps picnics, leading campus tours, Providing guards for the annual Science Fair, helping with University registrations. Telethons, and Alumni mailings to name just a few. The annual USO Show was Flight ' s major campus social activity. Angels worked closely with the corps, the Boys Club, and Hillcrest Orphanage in planning Halloween, Christmas, and Easter parties. For the past two years they participated in the EARC candy drive and The Channel 9 TV Auction. Each year the Flight participated in UNICEF collections, the 7 merican Cancer Drive or the Heart Fund. A major Angel-Arnold project was to periodically wash down airplanes at Dress Regional. Angel Flight raised funds by operating a con- cession stand at the Big and Little 39 Bike Races and selling stocking stuffers, small gifts and use- ful household items. In 1976 Angel Flight raised money for St. Jude ' s Hospital and Cincinnati ' s Angel Flight Closes After Twenty-two Years First Row: Esther Turner, Jennifer Fletcher, Fran Shrout, Carole Chumley, Peggie Cutter, Ellen Peat. Burn Center by organizing a Runathon and seek- ing donations from businesses throughout the Tri-State. The Angel Flight Drill Team partici- pated in the Fall Festival Parade, the WROZ Christmas Parade, the Armed Forces Parade, and halftimes at the UE Basketball games. In 1973 Angel Flight began its own Colorguard to assist the Corps and participated in home foot- ball and basketball games. Angel Flight brought the University many awards and honors including: the Purdue Cup for the chapter best fulfilling the Angel Flight mission, the Samuel E. Anderson Award for best furtherence of Arnold Air objectives, the Out- standing angel Flight Commander on the Area and National levels, the Thomas A. Morrison Leadership Award for the area Angel and Arnold displayng the best leadership ability, and the John P. Robbins Silver Wings Award for the Angel best fulfilling the Angel Flight image. The Donald L. Wright Flight received the Outstand- ing Advisor Award for several years and the National Merit Award for outstanding individ- ual contribution to advance Angel Flight on the Area and National levels. In 1973 the Flight became the proud owners of an official Angel Flight flag. Donated by the Evansville Kiwanis Club, it is the only one in existence. Angel Flight will close on May 20, 1979. We, the members of Angel Flight, have appreciated and considered it an honor to serve our campus and country. We will truly miss our organization but the memories will live on forever. We want to extend our thanks to the Unviersity and our advisors for their support and the leadership qualities they have instilled in us. Kevin Myers, Editor This book is not perfect. I am the first to admit there are fauhs. Some are mine, but many are the resuh of chance, unavoidable circumstances. Be assured, under the same circumstances the 1979 LinC could be no better. 1 think 1 had an exceptional staff and want to take time to thank them. David, you helped me more than you can ever know. You took a lot of pressure off me and your writing skills are a plus to the book. Mel, you ' re the best, and I am grateful for everything you were able to do. Shellie, just when I needed a Layout Editor you were there; you gave it all you had. Dedication and perseverance are the key to this job and you have them. Patti, you ' re a great asset. You can do layouts as well as take pic- tures; having you on the staff has been an indescribable pleasure. Monica, you came to my rescue, you worked your heart out, you were always on time. My newest photographer, Steve, you came along at a crucial point. Your work is exception, your style is terrific. Thanks for showing up in my office that day. Finally 1 thank Steven, my artist, whose advice I value more than anyone else ' s. Your insight is only equaled by the quality of your work. There are many people not on the staff who helped in various ways, and 1 want to give a few special thanks. Myra, 1 know the LinC is not one of your duties, but you helped anyway. The Union Secretary Pam, thanks for playing mail carrier for me this summer. Stan in Sports Information put up with me a lot. What can I say? Next year I ' ll get a Sports Editor to bother you guys. Kent Whitehead: another year of marvelous senior pictures. Richard, the picture you gave me is perfect. Julie and the entire Crescent staff were helpful in every way: you ' re all great. My roommate Jim, you put up with alot, thanks and you know I mean it. Cathy, you did the index when there was no one else; I am forever indebted. To all, thanks again.
