Text from Pages 1 - 240 of the 1978 volume:

Every year, it is the difficult task of the yearbook editor and his staff to find something or someone appropriate enough to name the book in memory of. Unfortunately, such was not the case this year. The trag- edy speaks for itself in the hearts and minds of all who witnessed the many facets of the crash. Therefore, it is our wish to commemorate this book in the name of those who died on that cold and rainy night of December 13, 1977. 3 Table of Contents Activities 17 Greeks 145 Organizations 161 Housing 181 Seniors 189 Senior Index 209 Faculty 227 7 10 11 16 Activities Fall quarter brings new Greek women For the girls above, this is an important point in their college careers, when they must make a choice among the sorori- ties that they have rushed. Above, Steve Hipfel accepts the envelope containing his. After signing a bid, the new pledge is rushed from the Great Hall and heaved into a mass of bodies, whose outstretched hands he rides to the bottom of the Union steps. This mass is actually the fraternities, welcoming their pledges in a truly dis- tinct manner. Gaudin. a for- mer All-State soccer player in New York and a four year vet- eran of semi-professional soccer, assumed the U of E coaching duties on September 1 of last year. Before coming to U of E, Coach Gaudin was head basket- ball and soccer coach at Evans- ville Day School. Gaudin ' s pres- ence at the Day School com- memorated his first venture into full-time coaching in Evansville. He was also instrumental in organizing Evansville ' s Elemen- tary Soccer League. In Bob Gau- din ' s earlier days he played high school soccer at Old Forge, New York and was on the State Uni- versity of New York (Potsdam) varsity contingent for four years. In the future. Coach Gaudin plans to recruit nationwide. Above right. Coach Gaudin looks on with approval as the team moves on to a victorious season. Far above, Oster- hage attempts to pass the ball under pressure. During a promotional game. in the beginning of the season, Vinto tries to keep the ball from Papa as shown above left. Below, Matt Bielfield is on the spot kicking the ball up into offensive play. 27 First-year, veteran players finish victorious This year ' s soccer team was mainly one of first year collegi- ate players ignited by a few very talented veterans. Among the first-year players was Ed Dwyer who led all freshmen in scoring, while Don Hellman was deemed the most consistent of the bat- tling novices. Among the experienced veter- ans was Frank Jackson who con- tributed essential goalie skills and leadership ability. The incomparable Papa Jobe, a key factor in many wins during the season, gained recognition as the state ' s leading scorer and nomi- nation to the ISAA all Mid-East team. Meanwhile. Chris Camp- bell added any extra punch needed to insure a team victory. The team broke numerous records including three All-time records. The strong blend of freshmen and returning veteran players set a total of six all-time records under the guidance of first year head coach Bob Gaudin. This season ' s individual offen- sive standouts were Papa Jobe and Chris Campbell. Jobe fin- ished his season as the state lead- ing scorer with 22 goals and was also near the top in assists with nine. Last year ' s leading scorer, Chris Campbell, accumulated nine goals and five assists to round-out the season offen- sively. Defensively, goalie Frank Jackson tied a school mark for the most shutouts with two. Gorden Osterhage gets a pass from a teammate above. Total passing statistics amounted to 1,279 yards with 171 attempts and 92 completions. Fumbles were a common phenomenon as illus- trated (right). In summing up the 1977 foot- ball season, there are four basic reasons for the season record of 1-9. First of all, it was difficult for the team to adjust to the transition of a new head coach, new offense, and different train- ing methods than in the past. Secondly, the Aces football schedule consisted of good strong teams built up from previ- ous years. Third, and most detri- mental to the team ' s perform- ance was the constant presence of injuries which kept the team from hitting on all cylinders. Last of all, in some areas, the team was lacking in strong per- sonnel. In the mind of Coach Moses there would have been an entirely different outcome to the season if early games lost by two or three points could have been won. This would have provided the team with momentum and morale boost in preparing them for the tougher games on the schedule. Team Played UofE Franklin 25 11 S.E. Missouri 27 11 N.E. After much controversy over having a band or performer, whether to have a king or not, and whether our football team would play Divsion III or Pop Warner, Homecoming 1977 got under way. The Homecoming concert was finally decided; Dave Loggins of Please Come to Boston fame and Tom Chapin were selected as the performers since big name performers who UE had grown accustomed to from past home- comings were unavailable. The National Guard Armory was selected as the site of the concert which nearly 3000 attended. Tom Chapin proved to be a fine entertainer while Dave Loggins proved he could stand, sing, and be high all at the same time. 44 Float competition was excel- lent; a wide array of floats entered. After much contem- plation, it was decided that Phi Mu had the best non-mechanical float with Hughes Hall and Chi Omega following right behind. As usual, the Engineering club took first in the mechanical lawn display category. The spirit con- test was won by the women of AOPi and the Sig Eps won in the men ' s division. Finally the big day arrived. Homecoming . A furious week of float building, queen cam- paigning, and preparation was coming to an end. The Aces were to entertain a tough Wayne State team from Detroit. Every- thing looked perfect as the 3000 fans turned out to witness an Aces victory over the Tartars of Wayne State on what appeared to be a perfect weather day. 46 But alas, not all was as it should be. The skies became cloudy, the temperature dropped and UE was thoroughly demol- ished 50-0 in the mudbath at Central Stadium. What had been a crowd of 3000 people dropped to slightly under 100 cold, wet fans by the game ' s end. A healthy crowd did remain until halftime, but only to witness the crowning of a new homecoming queen. Seven groups had entered candidates for queen. Julia Gilli- gan for Hughes Hall, Nancy Wilsbacher of Phi Mu, Debbie Dausman of Chi Omega, Ann Tevebaugh of AOPi, Sara Campbell of Moore Hall, Ramona Walker of ZTA and Jody Randall of Alpha Phi were the queen candidates. A disillu- sioned football crowd witnessed the crowning of Ann Tevebaugh as the 1977 Queen. Phi Kappa Tau was awarded a special tro- phy for game spirit as they were just about the only fans left at the game ' s end. 47 i As another injury hits the season, Joe Miller is carried off by his teammates as shown below. This was held Friday, November 11, 1977. All proceeds were given to the Blind Association. The kidnapping of organiza- tion ' s presidents occurred around four o ' clock. In order to free their captured member, each organization sent a repre- sentative to the AOII suite with a minimum ransom of ten one- pound cans if the organization had a membership between 0-15 and a minimum ransom of fif- teen one-pound cans if the organization had over fifteen members. The two organizations donating the largest number of cans received a first and second place trophy. This year ' s winners out of the 37 participating organizations were Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity with 3,238 cans and the Crescents of Lambda Chi Alpha with 73 cans. The total number of cans donated this year was a record breaking 4,001. Kidnappings like these were a common occurrence on the UE campus when the women of AOII teamed with Jesse James to bring home more cans than ever before. THE CHERRY ORCHARD is a tale of a generous, ardent woman, Madame Ranevsky, unaware that her world is crum- bling down around her. How- ever, besides being a play of human desolation, THE CHERRY ORCHARD demon- strates the decay of Russian aris- tocracy at the turn of this cen- tury, and uncannily predicted the arrival of a turning point in modern history, the rise of Socialism. Laurie Ross, two time UET nominee for the Irene Ryan Scholarship Award, had the role of Madame Ranevsky, the opti- mistic matriarch of the decaying Russian household. Ms. Laurie Ross received her third nomina- tion for this contest. Last year Ms. Ross was First Runner-up in the Regional contest. Two years ago Ms. Ross was co-nom- inee for the award. The 25 member cast and crew departed the Evansville campus in January for the regional pres- entation at Wright State Univer- sity. In March the selections for the National Festival will be announced. THE CHERRY ORCHARD Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya Laurie Ross Anya Beth North Varya Jan Ong Gayev Norm Brandenstein Dale Wilson R. Except for the heart-wrench- ing moans of family and the unabashed weeping of friends, a stony silence, not unlike that one might find in the eye of a hurri- cane, was the most apparent sign that something was awfully, incomprehensively wrong. It was a silence that spoke vol- umes. Friends embraced, strangers shuddered, families prayed. But no one understood; per- haps no one ever will. Simultaneously, people every- where felt cheated and stripped to the bone, yet guilty in know- ing that their grief seemed unim- portant, even selfish, compared to the unknowable agony of anguish and despair that the families of the fallen experi- enced. It will be recorded that in a fiery plane crash on a Tuesday The night it rained tears night, Dec. 13, 1977, the 14 members of the University of Evansville basketball team, their coach, some of their school asso- ciates and friends and the plane crew, died in a desolate and muddy field. But the casualties were much greater than that. A part of Evansville and the surrounding area, which yielded so much of the talent that had created a legacy and promised a future, died with them. It was a cruel and brutal blow. People will remember, no doubt, where they were when they first heard the news. Most were relaxing in their homes, probably watching tele- vision, as a steady rain poured and fog began settling in, giving the dismal evening a surreal and foreboding appearance. Then, at approximately 7:30, the news broke that there had been a crash at Dress Regional Airport. Details were few, though there was at least the suggestion that the crash might have occurred in a populated area. Naturally enough, the first reaction was one of shock; that ' s the kind of thing people read in the papers when it occurs some- where else. Some, who had relatives or friends in the Melody Hills area, immediately tried to reach them. Others remained glued to their televisions and radios for further word. But then, not long after, the terrible news arrived: The passengers were believed to be UE ' s basketball Aces and their entourage; possibly three, perhaps only one, survived. It was almost unbelievable. If the gut reactions of emptiness and confusing despair that surged within all who heard could be compared with any other tragic event, perhaps it was the assassination of President John Kennedy. Suddenly the victims no longer were nameless, faceless entities on an ill-fated flight. They were, rather, a group of 56 personable young men who had generated an excitement among UE basketball legions that had gone unparalleled since the years when the Purple Aces ruled the college division. They were Bobby Watson, the effervescent young coach who had ignited the fire in fans once again; Bob Hudson, assistant athletic director and onetime business manager, whose leg- endary hard work had been in large part responsible for UE ' s success; Marv Bates, the sports announcer whose name became synonymous with Evansville sports and who never had an enemy; and all the rest, who with their own special contrib- utions were trying to take the school to new heights. And now, gone. More so than ever, all through the community, people were drawn paradoxically to their tel- evisions and radios, hungry for more information but not want- ing to hear confirmation of the original reports. Tragically, they proved true, and in the end, became worse. None of the 29 survived. At the university, lights which ordinarily would have been long dim burned brightly, as friends instinctively huddled to pray and comfort one another. Many had been colleagues; some, perhaps, lovers. Hundreds made their way to Neu Chapel, where they did their best to put the holocaust in some kind of terrible perspec- tive. It was difficult. After several hours, only a handful remained in the back pews, staring into the blackness of the night for whatever shred of comfort or reason they could grasp, making- their peace and praying for the welfare of those who remained behind. Strangers splashed along sul- len streets wordlessly, the wind and rain cutting through them without feeling. Others made a sort of pilgrim- age to the temporary morgue at the Community Center. Families and friends came through sporadically to attend to the grim business of identifying the victims, and for some the horror of the moment was too great to contain. Women shook and grown men cried. The bodies could be seen through the panes of glass, across the big courtyard, cov- ered with white sheets, lying in a row. All around them, nurses, doctors, policemen, ministers and acquaintances came and went, doing what had to be done as efficiently as possible under the most trying of circum- stances. In other parts of the building, bystanders gathered in twos and threes, and conversation was strained and erratic. What could be said? Some, affiliated with the school in some fashion, confided that they had been on the downed plane many times before. They were ashen, dis- traught at the loss of their friends and in wonderment at the whims of providence that had spared them the same fate. It ' s unfair, said one, shaking his head as if it were meant to be an attempt, though inadequate, to assess why this had tran- spired. The quiet was eloquent. Even the ambulances that broke the stillness as they whooshed along watery streets kept their sirens silent. By Wednesday morning, the initial reactions of shock were evolving into feelings of despair that something so devastating not only could happen, but hap- pen so close to home. Many had used the word trag- edy in an effort to label the dis- aster, but for most it couldn ' t begin to cover the scope and depth of their feelings; tragic didn ' t seem to go far enough in describing the magnitude of the loss. Hundreds of students and uni- versity staff and faculty packed Neu Chapel for a memorial serv- ice, while hundreds more, unable to get in, were turned away. As person after person spoke, in efforts to console and revive hope among those in attendance, the numbness gave way slowly, so that by service ' s end many in the crowd were throbbing with tears. We do not choose to live. We do not choose to die. Life is a gift, Dr. Phillip Ott told the grievers. You now know that the ques- tion, ' What ' s it all about? ' is more than a problem raised in class, added Dr. Robert Kress. Last night brought it home to us that we are wrong when we consign death to only the old, the elderly, the sick. If we really want to eulogize these men, we should carry on what they have done so energeti- cally, said Thornton Patberg, vice president for student affairs, his voice trembling. And so the students and the community at large have been charged to go forward, continu- ing to strive for excellence as a tribute to those who lost their lives Tuesday night. We can only try. But theirs was a talent and energy almost too bountiful to replace, and the community is severely wounded by their loss. They will not soon be forgot- ten. Greg Knipping, Sports Info. As I walked into the Union building I saw many others that seemed to be brushing up on their arithme- tic the same as I. With pen in cold, clammy hand, I signed in and preceded to have my temp- erature and blood pressure taken. Three minutes later I thought I had a chance to leave with my original seven pints. They had discovered I had a slight temperature; however, they also said that it was due to nervousness and sent me to the next station to wait and read the pamphlets on giving blood. While educating myself about this activity, I felt a pain in my ear . . . was it possible that they would take one whole pint of blood from my earlobe? Later, I found that this was just another test to make sure that my one pint was healthy. I slowly crawled on a flat white table to lay down . . . there was no turn- ing back now! With a freshly scrubbed arm, the moment finally arrived for the needle . . . I tried to relax ... I looked around Great Hall at the others who had overcome the agony . . . then I was told to squeeze a cylinder every five seconds to help pump my one pint into a bag. ' Ts the needle in yet I asked. With a small laugh the nurse explained it had been inserted at least two minutes ear- lier. Where was the excruciat- ing pain? . . . maybe it was all in the after-effect. After my seven pints had been reduced to six, I slowly sat up, had a few snacks, and pre- pared to meet the surprise after-effect. This year, there was a buffet dinner held in the Executive Inn before the dance, with 152 couples attending. At nine o ' clock, everyone walked across the street to the Gold Room of the Civic Auditorium, to dance till twelve to the music of Lynx. Punch, cheese, and crackers were served throughout the dance, and at the end, two fifty- dollar cash door prizes were awarded to Julia Gilligan and Tim Ralph. On January 20, 1978, the crowd came to dance, and dance they did! Above, Cindy Kramer and Kim Harris register for the door prizes, while Linda Hughes watches for the camera. 82 While some found the punch and cook- ies in great demand, others, such as Roger Garrett, below, were caught by the roving photographer while trying to put the make on his date, Lisa Welker. The Chi-O ' s and Brentano were in close competition the entire meet, even to the last event, which was to determine the Chi-O ' s the winner by three points. In the men ' s matches, the Chi ' s came out on top with a score of 86 points, while Hale Hall placed second with 77 and Hughes captured third with a score of 4 1 . 92 As Leo Reed watches the competition (above), the Chi-O ' s behind him keep up the spirit that helped them to over- come Brentano Hall in the last event for a first place. The Mermen of the University of Evansville swim team finished their best season by taking the I.C.C. title in a contest in which they were rated the underdogs. Leading them were senior Mike Waldorf, who set two new records, in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles. He was also a part of the record-setting 400 yard med- ley relay team and copped two second places in other events. The new record for the 400 was accomplished by the team of Waldorf, Rod Gray, Jim Slear, and Jeff Wise, turning a time of 3:42.58 to overturn the old time set by Wabash. In diving, the Aces cleaned house in both the 1 and 3-meter events by taking the top three places in both. Mark Hardaway, Gary Goodman, and Mike Barnhill teamed to accomplish this. The key to the snaring of the I.C.C. title and of the 9-1 season. however, was a strong and well- balanced team, which took points in events not necessarily by finishing first, but by finish- ing several swimmers in top pos- itions. The Women ' s team finished their first season 2-3, making a good start for the new sport. 94 Women ' s Team Women ' s Swim Team: First Row: Karen Adcock, Gloria Cabrera, Bonnie Single, Diana Cabrera, Marcia Kiessling. There were several aims in what became known as the Memorial Fund: to help replace money normally earned throughout the season; to fund recruiting and develop scholarships for the future; and to fund the building of a Memorial Plaza behind the Administration Building. In addition to donations, there were many benefits organized by concerned individuals and groups to help build the fund. Sherry Crawford and Dennis and Cree performed in Shanklin. the Holiday Tourney collected donations, the Pittsburgh Steel- ers played basketball for a sta- dium crowd for the fund, and Rich Little and Henry Mancini gave a benefit concert. Ground-breaking for the Memorial Plaza was held on Founder ' s Day, March 30, 1978, with Senator Richard Lugar in attendance. From that point, work on the plaza progressed rapidly, with students helping lay the center bricks. By summer it was finished, giving the campus a suiting memorial for those who died the night of December 13, 1977. Women ' s Varsity Softball 100 WOMEN ' S SOFTBALL (3-11) Coach: Lois Patton Ind. Also in the competition were Alpha Phi- TKE with Toyland and Zeta with For Want of a Wild Card . UE finishes new addition The University of Evansville completed the building of a $2,700,000 Engineering Science addition. The major objective of this addition was the remodeling of the old building. Built in 1947 the old building served the Uni- versity well, but technological progress in the last 30 years made substantial changes to the engineering and science labora- tories necessary. The existing 59,000 square- foot building will have com- pletely remodeled class rooms and laboratories for engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, and computer science. It will also contain an advanced solar labo- ratory, science library, and resource center. The new 300.000 square-foot addition will contain specially equipped psychology and geog- raphy laboratories, faculty offices, general classrooms, and laboratories. The new Engineering and Sci- ence building along with the remodeling of the old building should be completed by the fall of 1978. Men ' s Track The University of Evansville ' s cindermen began training under a new head coach, Greg Carlson. This was his first year in college coaching. 112 The 1978 trackmen were Pat Bales, Ondra Berry, Dan Decker, Fred Ellis, Victor Emanual, Rory Hennings, Rob Stephenson, Rick Stucky, Harold Wilson, and David Wires. The 1978 fieldmen were Ronald McDonald, and Terry Recker. 113 Once again, the men of Phi Kappa Tau set a record in the amount of donations gathered for the American Cancer Society through their annual Derby Week. The week ' s collecting activities netted $1914, of which AOPi raised over $450 to take the 1978 Derby Queen trophy for their candidate, Becky Ship- ley. The games, held on Saturday and culminating the week ' s activities, were won this year by Alpha Phi, who edged ZTA out of the first-place trophy by two points. That is why the Univer- sity operates Harlaxton College. At some time in their life, everyone should have an elegant manor house in the English mid- lands to call home. That is the opportunity afforded some two- hundred students who attend Harlaxton College each year. The Manor is located just out- side the city of Grantham, about two-hundred miles from Lon- don. Each semester, it houses over one-hundred students and nearly a dozen faculty members. The house itself is like a dream castle. There are count- less rooms connected by numer- ous staircases and hallways, even a few hidden ones. The interior design is no less than magnificent, and, as is true of most grand houses in England, it is said to have its own ghosts roaming the grounds. In academics, the College offers a wide-range of liberal arts courses taught by British and visiting American professors. Classes range from studies in English Literature and Fine Arts to an examination of the British economy and an archaeology dig. However, the academic week is only four days to encour- age and facilitate travel in the British Isles. As an added stimu- lus to travel, the student coordi- nator at Harlaxton arranges fre- quent field trips to the more pop- ular parts of the country. During semester holidays ' ' travel often becomes more extensive to include Eastern and Western Europe as well as parts of North- ern Africa. A stay at the manor is most aptly termed The Harlaxton Experience. While one is there, he or she not only learns by the classroom and travel experience, but gains insight from contact with other students from all parts of the United States and several foreign countries who come to the Manor also. The Isles, the Continent, and the people make Harlaxton a truly lifelong experience. At left. Dr. Arthur Kincaid is seen performing the Creechie dance, an old Manor custom. Below, John Kiplinger is seen playing frisbee on the soccer field in front of the manor. 141 142 York, feeding pigeons in a park across from the British Museum, and the British Museum itself with a collec- tion of the Wealth of the Roman World, are all within easy traveling distance of the Manor. The music was provided by the UE Sym- phonic Band and Concert Choir. After the Color Guard presenta- tion by the ROTC and the sing- ing of the National Anthem and the UE Hymn, Rev. Chamberlin gave the invocation. The Commencement Address was given by President Albert G. Huegli of Valparaiso University. President Wallace B. Graves gives Tyrone Bragg a smile and a handshake of congratulations along with his dip- loma as shown left. Above, a senior listens intently to the address. How did the time slip away so fast? Opposite page — The UE Concert Choir sing Praise to the Lord, the Almighty. Mike Armbruster is elated that graduation has finally come. Zeta PART-TIME ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Jonette Aarstad Linda Wambach Rebecca Ann Wineinger Yearbooks seem to be on the decline. People act less inter- ested in them than they were even a few years ago. This makes production of a yearbook all the more difficult, especially when it comes to finding a staff large enough and dedicated to making a good book. In addition to those on the regular staff, there are those who help by donating time and moral support to the cause. While I had a small group this year, they were genuinely concerned with doing the best job that they could. Because of this, I owe them and those others a great debt of gratitude. They are listed below. There is one, however, without whose pres- ence this book would never have existed. Fm speaking of Kathy Harris, my layout editor. Those who were here for summer know the many hours that Kathy put in on the book over and above her studies. In addition, she stayed an extra week and a half into the second summer session to work full-time to make sure that the book was completed. Til never be able to thank Kathy enough for her concern and work, so let it suffice to say that she is probably the person most responsible for the completion of the 1978 LinC, which I feel is the best in many years. Listed below are the others I would like to give a special thanks to: The Sunday Courier and Press Tom Kunkel Randy Dieter Mike Keating Robert Burke Bill Jackson The Associated Press Chuck Robinson Mary Ann Carter Mel Lukens The Heritage Photographic Group Kent Whitehead Dr. Russell Lewis Mike Armbruster Keith Butz Dr. Paul Sullivan Corey Hamilton Donna Wilson Matt Seeger Judi Mulberg Sandy Shaver Sandy Eakins Dave Wires Greg Smith Linda Cowell Maryalice Janowiak Sharon Mayfield Jennifer Fletcher U. of E.
