LinC 77 University of Evansville 1800 Lincoln Avenue edited by r.a. Hoffmann UWiVLr oil V Of EVANi ViLL£ LIBRARIES Big Mac retires on It may not be much for a man who has won virtually every award possible for a small college basketball coach, but the 1977 Line is dedicated to Arad McCutchan. McCutchan didn ' t become a college basketball coach until he was 34 years old, but in the next 31 years, his Evansville College and University of Evansville teams won 514 of the 828 games they played and dominated the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) College Division (now Division II) in a way it may never again be dominated - winning five national championships in a span of 13 seasons . McCutchan ' s association with UE began when he was a star basketball player from 1930 through 1934, leading the Aces in scoring three straight years and acting as team captain his senior year, when the team had a 15-4 record. After coaching in high schools for nine years (seven at Evansville Bosse), McCutchan spent three years in the Navy during World War II before taking over as Aces ' head basketball coach in 1946. Evansville helped form the Indiana Collegiate Conference (ICC) in the early 1950 ' s, then won or shared 16 basketball championships . McCutchan was named ICC Coach of the Year 12 times, roughly every other year. his night Evansville won national championships in 1959, 1960, 1964, 1965 (with a 29-0 record) and 1971. McCutchan was College Division Coach of the Year in 1964 and 1965. McCutchan was active with national teams, helping coach U.S. teams in the World Games in 1971 and Pan-American Games in 1975. He also coached teams for the U.S. Olympic try-outs in 1960 and 1968. He was elected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1973 and became the 14th coach in the history of college basketball to win 500 games , which he achieved in late 1976. McCutchan was never afraid to do something a little different. His teams wore orange uniforms (not the school color but easier to see); wore robes instead of warm-ups (easier to get off); wore T-shirts instead of tank tops (since it ' s more similar to practice garb); never cut a player for lack of talent. But he was more than a coach of winners on the basketball court. He coached IQ All- Americans , two who became All-Pros , but pointed with more pride to the fact that only four players who completed a fourth season of eligibility on his teams did not eventually earn a degree . table of contents: aciiviiies p. 17 opganizaiions p. ii;fij||«lllllMMlWtililini ' f ' ' ' MtJlrh sports p. 183 greeks p. 201 housing p. 215 faculty p. 223 senior inden p. 239 8 fall activities seniors p. 1Z9 opgnnizatiians p. spopis p. 183 gpeehs p. The hussies and hassles of moving are soon forgotten in the high energy of the new school year. New students and freshmen had a chance to get acquainted with college life during freshman orientation. Administrators got their first chance to serve the students . . , at the picnic . For veteran students they soon learned dorm rooms are still shrinking and head residents still don ' t allow pets . j Everything has its place. It just takes awhile to find it. Thornton Patberg, vice president of Student Affairs serves up the punch at the freshman picnic contrary to a Crescent report to the contrary . Icebreaker, Let ' s Get Acquainted well received After all the moving in was over it was time to get out and get the social feet wet. The place was the Morton Hall parking lot the sound unmistakenly loud. With the Waters Brothers Band providing the music it took the crowd about half the dance to get warmed up but once they did they were still going long after the Water Brothers had left for home. The next night, the scene shifted indoor to the basement of the Indian. Over 2000 student s jammed the Union to see the Boston street singer Stephen Baird or watch one of several movies or just recreate in the games room. Stephen Baird serenades the capacity crowd in the Indian. Baird was the best attended program that the Student Union Board programmed all year. Greeks will be Greeks. Climbing out a second- story window for a dance contest is just one of those amazing things that makes being a Greek unique. The scene is the Sig Ep A-Go-Go. Lawn parties offered cool refreshment 21 Boys will be Boys. A little warm weather, a little liquid refreshment and some watermelon makes for a lot of fun at the LCA Watermelon Bust. Tonight ' s the night. Everything seems alright with these dance-goers. I could have danced all night. These two young coeds appear to have roof bumping down. Sorority pledges had two week-ends of competition games to determine who had the better pledges. Males had a chance to sample Greek fraternity life as each gave a lawn party on a different week-end night . The Rush is on Oh, the friendships made when we are young. The memories last forever. Sorority rush was a big time for UE sororities. Over 200 girls pledged a sorority this year. li t ii WIW«M M t 1M« W rtft n iiilllMlill lil lM lta llli «i« ' ' '  '  - Pledging is unique After weeks of rush parties , smokers and lawn parties the time came for bids to be handed out to new members , or pledges . Bedecked in suit and tie the aspiring Greeks filed into the Great Hall and later were lifted out . And, off he goes into that great Greek life or something like that. Union Board Programs Diversified Alternatives Union Board, the social programming and entertainment organ of the Student Association offered a variety of programs . Union Board president was Lottie Hiatt and vice president Susan Kellams. Homecoming was the biggest in terms of size of the fall Union Board events , 26 Title IX strikes Aces homecoming Title IX struck Football Homecoming as equal opportunity hit the traditional election of the maiden of the gridiron. However, none of the guys seemed overwhelmingly interested in being Homecoming King as Union Board Special Events chairperson Cindy McCreary cancelled the King election when only a couple of contestants had entered. It was decided the escort of the elected queen would serve as the king. Voting was held in the Union on Thursday before the game . Sedaka was back with Texas twosome Neil Sedaka moved methodically through his show and left over 9,000 fans pleased. Highlights of the concert were Sedaka ' s ' 60 ' s melody and his latest hits, Laughter in the Rain, and Bad Blood. Backing up the middled-aged Sedaka were two newcomers from Texas, England Dan and John Ford Coley. Dan and Coley were well received especially on their top ten song at the time, I ' d Really Love to See You Tonight. 31 Cowell, Clark reign over festivities Hughes Hall representatives Linda Cowell and Malcolm Clark were honored as Football Homecoming Queen and King. The presentation of the award was postponed due to wet grounds and rain during the football game . Homecoming dances may be quickly becoming a thing of the past but not with this crowd. 32 Jean Shepherd ' ' Where is Evansville? Author Jean Shepherd was just one of personalities sponsored by the Informal Learning Sequence. The Hammond, Ind. author delighted his audience with recounts of his childhood and school days experience. Shepherd had little trouble conveying his type of humor to everyone in the audience . He represented a part of everyone ' s life in his various stories . 34 Casino Night breaks Union Board Coordinator of Student Activities wheels and deals at the craps tables during Casino Night in the Great Hall. Long hard hours go into those 15 minute programs you usually miss when you go for a hot dog at the beginning of the season and for the hot chocolate near the end of the season during halftime , The faces of a football game says a lot about the students of the participating teams . Football isn ' t always tackling, scoring touchdowns, and calling a toin coss (I mean coin toss). The Aces were plagued with rain this season. 41 Aces win ICC with 4-1 record, Coach Byers retires as coach ?if SWf Soccer Aces falter 3-8 The soccer team started off on the right foot by blanking Vincennes 7-0. A 3-0 victory over Parks College and 1 point losses to Bellarmine and McKendree closed the season. 44 45 Volleyballers have good year UE ' s volleyball team faced some tough opponents this past year including a squad from the University of Louisville. Scott Johnson led the Aces against Air Force with 16 points . Jeff Frey scored 14 points and grabbed the same number of rebounds to lead the Aces to the title against Central Michigan. Winter 77 — The Big Freeze } ' • It will be a cold aay before most will forget the winter of 1977. The thermometer dipped into sub-freezing temperatures for over three months and to sub-zero readings more often than most care to remember. But worst came to worst when the mercury dipped to -23 degrees F. Car tires froze to the pavement and no one moved outside unless they had to . It was the worst winter in over a century. The cause was attributed to a shift in the artic jet stream. UET ' s Ardele ' ' well received - What is behind the door? What is wrong . . . Why I don ' t know. On Feb. 15, Mary Louise Bell, 58, head of duplicating and supplies, died. She had been at UE 34 years . Almost one month later, on March 16 Mrs. Joan Elizabeth Stowers, 28, professor of pediatric nursing, died after a brief illness. Mrs. Stowers had been selected an Outstanding Young Woman of America in 1976. Ten years earlier she was selected the Outstanding Citizenship of Tommorrow by the Metropolitian EvansviUe Chamber of Commerce . Arad stunned a large crowd by announcing his retirement on what was to be a recognition night for his 500 plus coaching victories . The Big Mac never was one to take excessive praise so it is not sure why he picked this night to announce his retirement. Aces basketball is the poorer for it. Arad receives the accolades of his numerous friends on his special night . McCutchan ' s Aces bow out at 15-12 The Aces 1976-77 squad found some large obstacles during the season, but lost some of their biggest battles off the courts as Mike Smith was lost due to academic ineligibility, and Joe Peulen quit the squad. 70 i 71 ,. Women Aces finish second in Southern District Tourney 82 Senior ' s idea shows what handicap can be like Awareness Day points up difficulties of handicapped Senior Mark Weatherwax had an idea. Most UE students and administrators weren ' t aware of the problems handicapped students have in the seemingly accessible setting of UE . Keynote speeches from handicapped individuals from the community highlighted the day. Afterwards, student volunteers, teachers and administrators spent the rest of the day either confined to a wheelchair, blindfolded or otherwise impaired. One thing for sure those who were just acting out their impairment were glad to return to normal at day ' s end. Participation was good . But there is still a long way to go before UE is accessible to handicapped individuals affording them the opportunity of higher education. spring activities seniors p. iZB orcjianizations p. 1S5 sports p. 183 greeks p. President Graves announced amid much hoopla and festivities that NBA defensive all-star and Chicago Bull standout Jerry Sloan had been signed to replace Arad. Almost every Aces fan was satisified. Three days later, Sloan became the first UE basketball coach to retire undefeated. Sloan and the Bulls believed the UE job was not in Sloan ' s best interest. They were replaced with a telephone pole race and horseshoe frisbees . 113 Games marred by incident The highlight of Spring Day has been the games. However, this year they were marred by an incident between the finalists of the tug- of - war contest and the judge of the event. The Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Alpha Epsilon men had advanced to the finals of tug- of -war competition. What actually happened doesn ' t matter.
