You ' ve taken that drastic plunge into college life only to find your roommate snores like your brother and the person next door reminds you of your best- friend back home. College life must be meant for you. You ' re soon to face the noisy next door neighbor, a monotone profes- sor, the famous all-nighter in getting ready for that mid- term in chemistry. Indeed, college is a time for growing, making new friends, and reaching out to find yourself. Lawn Parties . . . Every year each fraternity hold an annual lawn party. The purpose of these parties is to in- terest U of E men in fraternity life. The sorori- ties, dormitories, and other organizations com- pete for prizes whether it be drinking apple ci- der from a baby bottle or being proclaimed Miss Watermelon Bust 1975. 24 26 Rush . . . Rush, rush, rush, that ' s the key word in all fraternity houses and sorority suites the first few days and weeks of school. The sororities hold organized parties in their suites the first week of school and try to in- terest the many new freshmen girls in join- ing a sorortiy and becoming-a sister. Two open houses are held, then a theme party, and lastly a preferential party. By the end of the week all the sorority girls are worn out and all the rushees are trying to make a decision of which sorority to pledge. Rush is a time to get to know new people and make new friends. This year U of E ' s five sororities took 81 pledges. The fellows have several weeks in which to rush and meet the new men on campus. Lawn parties are the fraternities way of getting to know and in- terest men in Greek life. Rush is a friendly smile from a stranger who may become your friend. 28 Union Board ' s Cassino Party On week-ends in the Indian, it ' s always entertainment time from folk music to one acts. A little of the Las Vegas atmosphere was added to the Union for all gam- blers. Children ' s Play ' ' The Indian Captive 33 Halloween It ' s that time of year when all the sane go a little bit crazy. The pretty girl down the hall mixes up a tasty brew from the, so called ear of a lizard which is actually soda, pumpkins somehow learn to smile, bobbing for ap- ples becomes a favorite past-time, and everyone turns into horrible looking monsters. The spirit of Halloween strikes all and costume parties are everywhere. 34 Turkey Run The Hale Hall men were unable once again to capture the elusive bird. Though they searched from the basement of Hale to the top floor the turkeys were impossible to trap. It seems as though the Hale Hall trap- pers were turned into a bunch of turkeys themselves. The real birds were donated to a local charity. McCarthy Visits U of E The former Senator Eugene McCarthy- visited the U of E in October. He spoke on The Challenge to America . An- swering questions at the end of his speech, McCarthy, who ran as a Dem- ocrat in the 1968 primaries, said he was planning an independent campaign in 1976. He said he hoped to be on the ballot in all 50 states and hoped that the young people on campuses would swing behind him with their support. Some 250 gathered to listen and speak with McCarthy. 36 City Elections and India Dancer In the fall. Mayor Russell Lloyd was again re-elected as mayor of our fair city, Evans ville. Needless to say, he was overjoyed. Also this fall U of E was honored to have the very talented native dancer, Marjusri. Homecoming Fall week-end began October 23 with the Homecoming queen elections. The high point of the week-end was the football game that Saturday at 1:30. At half-time Miss Beth Buening, a junior Hughes Hall resident, was crowned U of E Football Homecoming Queen. Miss Christi Spaulding, a junior and a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority was proclaimed first runner-up. Other activities were a pep rally, lawn dis- plays, car decorating, a dance, class reunions, and a special rock concert with Loggins and Messina at Robert ' s Stadium. 39 Loggins and Messina in concert Jesse James Day ' ' Ah, Wilderness First Play of UET Theatre . . . Eugene O ' Neill ' s comedy opened in Shanklin November 7 under the direction of John Da- vid Lutz. O ' Neill often referred to this play as a comedy of recollection. The play is his dream of the joyful and exciting process of growing up. It depicts an image of the child- hood most people remember but, never ac- tually knew. Cast included: Mark Lipps, Tom Shinnaman, Stu Miller, Darrell Trout - man, Dave Kell, Rebecca Guy, Donn Kas- per, Dolly Meenan, Richard Smith, Nancy Wagner, Rhona Justice, Mark Young, Lau- rie Ross, Jeri Gibson, and Jeff Richards. This performance was one of the finalists for the American College Theatre Festival. 42 Modern library . . . 45 U-sing The theme was the bicenten- nial. Each group selected music that would carry out this tribute to America. The Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity took the over -all trophy as well as best in the men ' s division. The Chi Omega Social Sorority won the first place trophy for the wom- en ' s division. Nine organiza- tions participated. 46 Pop ' s Concert Harmony 76 The Pop ' s Concert is sponsored and performed by Sigma Alpha Iota and Phi Mu Alpha Music Fra- ternities. The various students exhibit their tal- ent in song and dance. This year was centered on the different types of music that has evolved since America became a nation. Colorful outfits and gleaming smiles tell you that these students not only have worked hours upon end to put together such a show but are real performers. Basketball homecoming Banners, lovely ladies, elgible bachelors, shout- ing cheers, and let ' s not forget the Aces basketball team. Yes, that ' s what goes to make up an Evans - ville Basketball Homecom- ing. Debbie Price, a jun- ior, was crowned queen to reign over the festivites and Mike Stacy was pro- claimed Bachelor of the Year. Sheila McNichols was first runner-up and Kent Alder was also the first runner up for Bache- lor of the Year. The Phi Mu Sorority and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity received the Spirit Week awards. Night of the Iguana Tennesse William ' s play, The Night of Iguana is based on William ' s life. He takes different lonely moments of great despair which he has at one time experienced and in- flects them on his characters. The play takes place in the Costa Verde Hotel on the West Coast of Mexico in a town called Puerto Barrio. Williams had been in Mexico for a long period of time and it was there that he found much of the meaning to life. The answer to life for him was, To reach the point of despair and go past it with courage. The cast included; Scott Lank, Becky Guy, Rey Mazzocco, Bill Goulet, Jeff Shure, Joy John- son, Dave Zook, Jamie Wise, Tom Butoryak, Carolyn Lancet, Laurie Ross, Darrell Troutman, Stephanie Suplee, Mark Young, Maria Hernandez, and Sarah Hernan- dez. USO show Angel Flight and Arnold Air Society went all American for their 1976 production which was March 6. The USO Show is an annual event. All the exist- ing talent of the two groups in pooled together to give you a wide variety of entertainment. The director for the 1976 USO Show was Angel Paula Fischer. Along with the performance there is also a raffle. The win- ner has the choice of $10 or a date with an Angel of your chosing. 52 Basketball marathon Musical Madness . . A rock, a tree, a squirrel, and all of them are simply U of E students who went Musically Mad April 3 and 4. With the theme Hurray For Hollywood , the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and the Sigma Epsilon Fraternity received the first place trophy. Second place went to the Alpha Phi Sorority and the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. Third place was the Chi Omega Sorority. %  •  Ml IIIIU ' I n  n I Mill 1 • i i ' .t 55 Our Town Thorton Wilder ' s Our Town is a play about belonging. Be- longing to a family, but more than that to a country and to a nation. There are no real props in the play only two wooden frames for scenery. The people live, eat, and sleep, near one another but never really get to know the other. Not until death can they look back and realize how fruitless their lives had been. The main characters in Wilder ' s play were: Tom Shinnaman, Dave Kell, Jan Ong, Scott Lank, Bill Goulet, Maria Madinger, and Rhona Justice. 56 Hughes hall fire Sunday, April 4 at about 4:10 in the afternoon, a fire broke out in Hughes Hall demolish- ing two rooms and causing minor damage to other rooms. The cause of the fire that destroyed a portion of the third floor was attributed to electri- cal causes. The students evacuated quickly after the fire alarm. Steel door frames were buckled, paint peeled from the walls, and the fire resistant doors and carpet were charred by the blaze. Thirty -five stu- dents were displaced by the fire. The fraternities and other Hughes ' residents absorbed the displaced stu- dents. No one was seriously hurt in the fire. ■I W fli Flapjack fire fun follies When the fire struck Hughes Hall it seemed unlikely the students whose belongings were destroyed would ever be com- pensated. Som eone came up with the idea to get students, faculty, and administrators to participate in a contest where they would have sponsors who would donate so much per pan- cake. Nearly 100 students and three administrators were present. Stacks of flapjacks greeted every contestant. Judges around the tables tal- lied the number of pancakes eaten. Ron Moose Weinell with five minutes left ate pan- cakes number 26, 27, and fin- ally finishing number 28, he won the contest, A team called the munchies took a first also for the largest number of pancakes consumed by a group. They had a total of 65 pancakes in 45 minutes. A total of $1, 213 was raised for students in the fire. Miss University of Evansville Ten contestants competed for the title of Miss U of E April 11. The new Miss U of E, Don- na Brown was selected. Later she found that she had received employment at Opryland. She would be unable to go to the Miss Indiana Pageant there- fore, she had to resign her crown. First runner-up Linda Cowell was then given the tide. (Upper Left) Phi Tau Derby The Phi Tau Derby is the kick-off for spring week activities. All the proceeds from the Derby go to the Cancer Society. The Phi Tau Derby Queen, Janice McClusky, was crowned at the Derby Dance. The queen is the one who received the largest donation for the Cancer Society. Morton Hall won the five -legged race, the chariot design, and the egg toss. Plus, they took the over-all trophy. Alpha Phi won the clothes line and the chariot race. 62 Sunshine The winter ' s snow fades away and the spring flowers begin to blossom with the sun ' s warming rays. That ' s the time you see the lawns around campus scattered with skimpy clad bodies, blankets to stretch out on, and bottles after bottles of suntan oils. Yes, winter is finally over. Outdoor classes . . . By May 14 the classrooms are stuffy, the pro- fessors a little cranky, and you have spring fever. That ' s the time to move your classes out- side so you can hear the song of the bird and feel the sun against your face. Godspell . During Spring Week, Godspell was presented by the University Theatre. Godspell is a celebration and a re- bellion against the traditions in reli- gion. It is the musical gospel of Mat- thew which is an experience rather than a production. Cast members in- cluded: R. Scott Lank, Stephen Finch, Kim Bitz, Norman Bra nden- stein. Donna Brown, Sheila Chester, Rebecca Guy, Larry Johnson, Donna Kasper, Sharon Rolf, Sue Schribee, Richard Smith and Jamie Wise. God- spell was under the direction of John David Lutz. 66 67 spring Week . . . Spring Week is the time when a young man ' s heart turns to fancy and a girl ' s turns to thoughts of love. At the U of E Spring Week is a gala af- fair. Audobon Day, the barn party, Gymkhana, bike races, trivia con- test, and bingo gives students a chance to kick off their shoes after a winter of classes and several weeks of spring fever. Some 1100 students made their way to Audobon State Park when classes were cancelled Friday of Spring Week. And the Chi Omega Sorority took first in the Little 39 bike race as TKE won the Big 39 again. 68 69 Chi O teams led in Little 39 . . . 73 Graduation 1976 After four years of hard study and some play ... or perhaps vice versa, this is the proverbial end of the road. It ' s raining so you ' re sit- ting in scenic Roberts Stadium . . . but your parents are here and some of your friends are graduating with you . . . maybe it won ' t be so bad. You wait through however many de- grees before your row starts to move and you head for your diploma. Noth- ing more can go wrong . . . except maybe they mispronounce your name . . . or you ' re not in the right order . . . or the guy in front of you turns an unexpected handspring. I3ut now it ' s over and you have a diploma . . . ready? 76 77 Graduation ' 76 What happens now depends on each gradu- ate. What has happened also depended on each graduate. Whatever they did . . . or no matter how long it might have taken . . . it ' s over. And . . . maybe it wasn ' t so bad. The Manor -It ' s not a place, it ' s more of an abstract feeling. Perhaps it ' s concepts and values that we were devoid of before it. Perhaps it ' s irreplacable time, spent, squandered and cherished, willingly. 83 84 85 It lives on forever. Time changes the way we will view it. But time can never lessen the emotions and love that we each experience for it. sports y 91 93 The University of Evansville has long been noted for its basketball prowess, but only in recent years have the football Aces shown similar adeptness of the grid- iron. Coach Jim Byers seemingly has ideas of forging as strong a tradition of excellence on the football field as the basketball Aces have on the hardwood. Posting an 8-1 record last year in regular season play, this year ' s Aces suffered three heartbreakers by a total deficit of only 12 points, 11 points less than the 23 point loss in last year ' s single setback. Almost, they say, only counts in horseshoes, handgrenades, and atomic bombs, yet almost is the only way to describe such a cam- paign as this one. U of E ' s football program has come a long way, and it appears to be headed straight up. Led by seven seniors, Aces boost soccer record to 6-6. Mike Piatt held the high mark for field goals in a single game. 105 U of E wrestlers improve last year ' s record 109 UE matmen enjoyed a good season this year by defeating such teams as DePauw and Hanover. Led by Coach Bill Parker, the wrestlers also de- feated Valparaiso in a 38-8 point match. Ill A U of E Swim team place two All- Americans The height of UE ' s swimming season came with two mem- bers being named Ail -Ameri- cans. Diver Tom Henricks and swimmer Mike Waldorf re- ceived the honors. Five aquat- ic Aces went to the national meet, a tribute to the team that took the conference and ended with a 10-4 season. 113 UE went into the ICC playoffs as a dark horse and came out number three. Sadri Akin came out the team ' s top play- er followed by his doubles partner. Ken Oberheide. 114 U of E racketmen have strong season UE strides on to Jeff Korb established himself as a strong base of the UE track team by winning all of his races but one. Other members of the young team such as Joe May and Mel- vin Osby proved that next year ' s team should at least equal the growing strength ex- hibited this year. 116 Aces post good season on baseball diamond 121 Diamondmen take first place in I.C.C. 122 126 Women ' s intercollegiate sports grew stronger this season with better records being posted throughout the year. The inter- nal strength of the program has boasted morale from all sides. 127 Teamwork and balance led to good season 128 I t; ? Softball proved a strong hold for a quickly developing wo- men ' s intercollegiate program. This year was highlighted by the first small college tourney where the female Aces placed a strong second. 130 U of E women take second place in state 131 Football kicks off ' 75-76 IM season 132 Hughes repeats as Men ' s grid iron Champs. Women Crown Moore Hall as new IM football Queens. Mike Eineman directed Hughes Hall to its second consecutive football crown. LCA and Hale Hall took second and third places honors to copy last years final grid standings. Coach Mitch Gieselman must have known what he was doing as Hughes failed to suffer a single setback and placed more than its fair share of players on the dorms ' all star team. The women from Moore Hall took this year ' s women ' s foot- ball laurels by finishing their season undefeated and topping the tournament field. Led by four returning all -stars, in- cluding quarterback Pam Hen- dricks, Moore had to battle all the way with tough Morton Hall who placed seven team mem- bers on this years A league all-star team. 133 I Martha Owens and Toni Lauer led the AOPi ' s to a victory in intramural tennis. The Chio Omega sororitu took second followed by a close running third place Brentano. Hale Hall took first place in the men ' s competition followed by Sig Ep ' s Tye Reams. 134 Volleyball and tennis: two favorite fall IM sports 135 Golf added to women ' s IM competition: Hughes men win LCA has three winners in IM wrestling Inramural wrestling was dominated by the men of LCA. Mark Guard, Phil Kockmeyer and Mike Rupperecht, all took first places in their weight classes. On the golf course, Hughes Hall men knocked the LCA ' s out of their num- ber one position in IM golf. Time Swindle led the dorm team by de- feating LCA ' s Ruddy Bauer. Hale Hall placed third, led by Mike Wicker - sham. 137 Hughes guys and gals really bowl ' em over Table tennis tournament dominated by BSU and AOPi Led by Linda Nordhaus and Steve Harbin, Hughes Hall dominated all others in intra- mural bowling. Mike Sosinski also from Hughes Hall was top bowler in the league. Tau Kap- pa Epsilon had a small lead through much of the season but the Hughes men were consistent in their efforts to top them. With three weeks left in the season BUD was undefeated but could not withstand the stiff competition of the Hughes Hall gals. Lekan Adegbie, BSU, out- ponged Hughes Hall ' s James Tex Kilburn to take first place in the singles division of man ' s table tennis. Adegbie teamed up with Bill Felsher to top the dynamic duo of Kilburn and Bob Doc Kinsey in dou- bles play and put BSU in first place with Hughes running a close second. AOPI easily took first place in the women ' s table tennis tourn ament with ZTA in second place. Brenda Keller of AOPi won the 1 division champion- ship and Linda Hudson of Chi Omega defeated all others to win top honors in division 2. 139 Bears top GDI ' s to win IM-B-ball championship Led by Beth Murray, BUD tops womens IM B-ball BSU, Wick ' s Pies, Tappa Kegga Day and the the GDI ' s ended regular season play unde- feated to take their respective league ti- tles but none could withstand the tough competiton in tournament action. The end of season tournament included the top four teams from each of the four leagues. Al- though four teams went into the tourna- ment undefeated all fell as the Bears, with an 8-1 record going into the tournament, surprised the ranks by emerging as the champs. Led by Esley McClung, Dave Wint, Jacques Williams and Kenny Flas- poehler the Bears defeated the GDI ' s in the final game to secure the title. In women ' s b-ball action BUD took top honors by topping Brentano. Susan Hirsh- Chi O, Deb Robertson -Morton, Beth Mur- ray -BUD, Nance McDowell -Brentano and Barb Keepes -Morton made up the women ' s 1 all-star team for IM basketball. 142 Intramurals: One to one sports . . . or team sports 144 BSU runs away with first place in IM track meet 145 TKE and Brentano outpower all competition Through stiff competition the women of Brentano Hall came up with an exciting first place in IM Softball action by defeat- ing unbeaten Morton one in a playoff game. Brent ano ' s only loss of the season came in their last game against a slow starting Hughes Hall team who ended the season 6-4. Moore Hall finished with third place. The men of Tau Kappa Epsilon finished in first place in peti- tion league softball and in a playoff series against nonpeti- tion winners, the Bags, man- aged to become the top team in both leagues. The Lamda Chi Alphas finished in second place and Hale Hall surprised everyone by finishing third. 147 W Fall IM Eports 1 Men Jr OOtDail Tennis i -A Hughes «■ orb LCA P LCA Hale Hughes Cross Country Golf Hale ... ■ Hughes TKE f feT LCA PKT Hale Fall IM Sports Women Football Moore Morton Hughes Badminton Morton Brentano Moore Tennis AOPI ChiO Brentano Golf Moore, Morton Bud, Hughes ZTA, PhiMu Winter IM Sports Men Bowling Hughe TKE LCA Basketball BSU Hale LCA swimming LCA Hale Hughes Table Tennis BSU Hughes SPE Winter IM Sports Women Bowling Hughes Bud Brentano Basketball Brentano Morton Swimming Brentano cpo Hughes Table Tennis AOPi ZTA Moore Spring IM Sports Men Paddleball Hale TKE hughes Softball TKE LCA Hale Decatholon Hale LCA Hughes Track BSU Hale TKE 148 Final Intramural Results Men Hale 2565 TKE 2376 LCA 2299 Hughes SPE PKT SAE BSU Women Moore 2155 Bud ■ 2152 Morton 2146 Brentano AOPi Hughes ChiO ZTA PhiMu Outstanding Female Athlete Terri Droege Outstanding Male Athlete Brian Lauer Adams a - DEBORAH S.
