Student Publications P.O.Box 329 EvansvUle, Indiana 47701 ' Located in the Union Building ' THE LINC Yearbook (812)479-2850 TO: The Student Body FROM: The 1975 LinC Staff RE: LinC Dedication There always seems to be one person, either faculty member or adminis- trator, who goes out of their way to do as much as possible to help students alleviate some of the problems associated with college life. This year, as in every year since May 1964, one lady has put this task above all others. A part of the Union since her arrival on campus, this lady is never too busy to great visitors to the Union with a friendly smile and a cheerful hi . In an interview appearing in the September 21, 1964 issue of the Crescent, she expressed a desire to make the Union a Home away from Home to the stu- dents; A place where a student could be treated as individuals. She encouraged student participation. To this end, she was instrumental in acquiring office space for various student organizations such as the Student Association, Student Publications, Interfraternity, and Panhellenic Council. In recognition of her years of service to the student body, the 1975 LinC Staff hereby dedicates this edition of the UE LinC to: LOUISE M. With nothing better to do, students turned their at- tention to building snowmen (women ?), or having all out war with snowballs. Friday, few snowballs were again lofted, but in fewer numbers as most students used the snow as an excuse to sleep in, once more 78 Hubbell directs Ceremony of Innocence 80 . . . Director Hubbell was assisted in the production by Stage man- ager John Wright and Assistant stage manager Judy Smaltz 81 Board of Trustees continues tradition The Student Association had taken its stand on a tuition in- crease, and the message was clear: No increase for any rea- son, UE President Wallace B. Graves characterized that type of opposition as unconstructive ' and ignorant of the economic factors affecting the Univer- sity. Looking back on the cir- ,| cumstances surrounding the Board of Trustees ' decision of March 18 to raise tuition $189 per year, it is evident Dr. Graves was correct. Students were unaware of financial considerations which prompted the Trustees ' action; their ignorance was caused by the failure of the Administra- tion to trust the student body with the information upon which those considerations were founded. The official announce- ment of the increase sounded uncomfortably familiar, like an old record scratched and worn from frequent use. In- flation was the villian, it said, and a raise was necessaiy for UE to again have a balanced budget in 1975-76. What was omitted in the release was the fact that the financial difficulty assailing most private universities had arrived in Evansville. Spending on all capital asset accounts were frozen March 11 when Dr. Frank McKenna, Vice President for Administration, had projected a budget deficit of $128,034 for the 1974-75 fiscal year. Falling enrollment was cited as the principle cause of the deficit, which last fall was almost two percent below ear- lier estimates. Concern about dropping enrollment, an annual fact since 1973, prompted an expenditure of $289,000 from reserve funds for an 18 month promotional campaign by an Oklahoma advertising firm. The student body first be- came aware of these factors May 2 when a team of student investigators reported the story in the Crescent. The Trustees, however, knew of the deficit and enrollment problems when they approved the tuition raise on March 18. It is obvious Dr. Graves wishes constructive student criticism to be based upon misleading information spoon- fed them by his staff. It is also obvious the pres- ident feels student leaders are ' ■mi not responsible enough to make l| literate decisions based upon concrete evidence, but will n consistently vote with their pocketbook and not with their heads. The University of Evans- ville is not Sears Roebuck and Co. , and if it is to be run as such, the student should be granted the security of a guarantee. Education is a cooperative enterprise between all phases of the collegiate community. Exclusion of any faction from the processes by which educa- tional direction is shaped cheapens that education and transforms the pursuit of truth into a sham. American, English holidays celebrated Harlaxton means many things to many people, one of these is celebration. Har- laxton students celebrate everything from Halloween to Guy Fawkes Day in a Bloody good way. Halloween brought out Shady Ladies and other as- sorted derelicts for a cos- tume party and hayride, with a midway stop at the local pub, which helped make the hayride much more interest- ing to say the least. Thanksgiving brought a student planned worship ser- vice. The simple fact that being at Harlaxton is such a unique experience made the meaning of Thanksgiving a little clearer to everyone, of course the fact that pumpkin pie had been imported for the occasion didn ' t hurt. Students even invented an event to celebrate when every- one dressed in their best to sit down to a real Elizabethan banquet, complete with ser- ving wenches, food throwing, dueling, a pig ' s head and jes- ters. Numerous other events were celebrated by Harlaxton students for various reasons. Guy Fawkes Day, the English equivilant of our July 4th, brought the children of the village to the Manor for a bonfire and fireworks display. For added excitement one little boy ' s parka caught fire from a falling spark, no one was hurt and the event was a big success. Various other social func- tions allowed residents of Harlaxton Manor to become better friends with the people of the area. All in all Harlaxton stu- dents participated fully in the social life of England and this participation added a much greater dimension to their stay at Harlaxton Manor. 191 Students start coffee house Nurses rub-down for pay Events besides these also went on at Harlaxton, every Friday night a student run coffee house. The Olde Brown Shoe, gave townspeople and students a chance to show off their talents. The Sophomore nursing class opened the Har- laxton Massage Parlor to raise money for their cap- ping ceremony. For two weeks customers paid for an expert backrub and went away sighing for more. Other exciting activities included the Bo Diddley Memorial Drinking Contest, trying to keep warm, trying to find clean eating utensils, and the all time favorite, guessing who was in the shower stall next to you. Every once in a while, in between overnight excur- sions that last three days, people managed to put in a few hours of studying. It seems that for the last weeks of the semester the social life comes to a standstill while an outbreak of Clutch Fever takes over the Manor. ' 1 Harlaxton Aces participate in soccer, basketball against English foes Sports occupied a large segment of the time of those athletically inclined people, even those who weren ' t. As the Harlaxton Conglomera- tion, Evansville ' s one and only English soccer team took to the field, eager to try their inexperienced feet against those that had been playing almost all their lives. The Conglomeration soon learned that the going would be rough. After some excellent matches, all de- feats, but close ones, the Harlaxton Conglormeration ended the season with a smashing victory over a team from the local pub, the Gregory Arms. The victory celebration had just finished when an English version of the Aces took to the court. Hampered by typically English rainy weather, they found it hard to live up to the reputation left by last years victorious team. Once again defeats outnumbered victories, but the good times had by all made the season a success. 193 Harlaxton life leaves memories for a lifetime Guiness . . . Newcastle Brown . . . Harlaxton is a dreamland, it is a fantasy existence, something that cannot quite be explained to anyone who hasn ' t been there. It enables a person to do things that are only dreams to most people. You can go places, meet people, and see things that just a short while before were only dreams to you too! It can force you to grow, but only if you ' re ready to try. If you are not it can be a painful experience. No matter what happens, you return home as different person, with memories. Memories of people who in a few short weeks become your best friends or worst enemies ... of parties that can never be topped ... of being in a foreign country and realizing that you don ' t speak the language ... of standing for hours with a thumb in the air waiting for a lift ... of hearing strange noises in the middle of the night ... of people you will never see again ...
