Bluegrass is a unique type of musical form, spawned from country origin s and shot throughout with flashes of blues and traditional folk. Audience participation is a must and the students who took part in the event on the circle did their best to make the concert a success. 26 Frosh Picnic The week of September 15th was designated as freshman orientation week. Various activities were plan- ned to acquaint the incoming fresh- man with the campus. Orientation activities culminated with the annual picnic for the new students and their parents. RUSH - A dozen parties designed to coerce young men into going greek. The Tke ' s had a lawn party, the Sig Ep ' s an A-Go-GO , and the students danced till ex- hausted. The SAE ' s gave a luau and every- body came. The Phi Tau ' s had a greaser party where everyone slid back into the 50s. And Lambda Chi wound up things with the Watermellon Bust. Coke parties, skits, preferential , bids, meeting new friends and having fun is just the beginning of women ' s rush . The sororities try to show the new girls what sorority life and their parti- cular sorority is like. Each sorority holds two informal parties where all of the girls get a chance to meet the sorority women. Preferential parties are held by each sorority where they start the selection process to see who they will take for new sisters. 31 Rush . . . A moment of silence followed by an exclamation of joy. A new sister rushes to the suite of her sorority. Then, everyone goes to the circle where new sisters are presented to the sorority. I Presentation Presentation Ball - A special night where new pledges are honored. All of the sororities join together to create a special mood and a night to remember for their new sisters. As each pledge is presented by her escort she is given her sorority ' s flower as a remembrance of this night. 33 Halloween Trick or Treat the treat is the Halloween party. The trick is bobbing for apples without getting your hair wet. A bandana helps, but then you have to worry about those long sleeves . . . i A girl who isn ' t really a girl, a sad clown and a grinning pump- kin are all appropriate on Hallo- ween . At midnight the girl changed back into a boy, the clown smiled and the pumpkin . . . stayed a pumpkin. Two out of three isn ' t bad . Homecoming Homecoming is lawn displays, dances queen elections and a general merry making courtesy of the Alumni Associa- tion and the Union Board. There happens to be a football game every year as well but with all of the other activities it is easy to miss the fact. This year U. of E. played Missou- ri State and turned out the victor. Competition for Homecoming Queen was close as always, with Karen Knotts winning the honor. Dulcie Sinn was the runner up. Dulcie ' s campaign was a bit unusu- al. She choose to use bits of feminist philosophy instead of the coustomary photo-posters. Turkey Day Hale Hall ' s annual Tur- key Chase was a success - at least for the turkey . Forty participants chased the elusive bird through the halls of Hale but were unable to capture him. Danny Rogers won the award for the most unusual outfit. The most practical costume went to Mark Balin. The turkey ended up donated to a local home for the elderly „ U of E Sing In University Sing, sponsored by Sigma Alpha lota, was held November 16th. The groups participated in the annual event. Phi Mu cap- tured 1st place honors in the women ' s division and also the trophy for the best over all group. Phi Kappa Tau took the top award in the men ' s division as well as the award for the best direc- tor. Alpha Omicron Pi and Lamba Chi Alpha took 2nd place awards for the women ' s and men ' s divisions respectively. 39 Homecoming and The 50 ' s U of E ' s Basketball Homecoming was a great success with Ms. Mary Greenfield being crowned queen for 1974. The 50 ' s Dance was only one of the many activities which were planned for 50 ' s Week. For the dance, students turned out in bobby socks and rolled up jeans to dance their way back into the 50 ' s to the music of the Rock Island Band. 40 Streakin ' As the weather warmed up, so did the students. Several tried their hand at streaking. The night runners dazzled the campus with just a few bare necessities: sneakers, ties, and crazy hats. These co-eds sprinted across campus to a waiting van which took them to safety, but not before our photographer could snap a picture. 41 Pops Concert The Fifth Annual Pops Concert was pre- sented by the Sigma Alpha lota and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music honor societies on January 11, 12, 13, atShanklin Theatre. Sign of the times was the theme. Proceeds go to the Romayne Benedict and Wesley Shepard Music Scholarship Fund which provides two music scholarships to incoming freshmen. 42 44 Musical Madness- a time when the students can show their musical cre- ativity. Hughes Hall captured top honors in the 1 st division with Morton Hall taking second place. In the second catagory, Zeta Tau Alpha won and Chi Omega took second. The combined talents Alpha Omicron Pi and Lambda Chi Alpha won the third division as well as the trophy for best over-all group. Nancy Oltman of Chi Omega was given the award for best director. Audubon Day If the U of E ' s Engineering students could figure a way to harness all the energy expended at Audubon Day, the energy crisis would be over. The annual Spring Week activity brings a crowd of students flocking to Audubon Park for a day of fun and games. Some of the fun is in the form of organized competition, such as the traditional tug-of-war, but more often it is unorganized, and it was hard to tell who was enjoying the day more. 46 i Miss U of E This year ' s Miss U of E competition brought 11 contestants to the Shanklin Theatre Stage. The competition, spon- sored by Union Board, is part of the Miss America preliminary eliminations, the winner automatically going on to partici- pate in the Miss Indiana Pageant. ZTA ' s Theodora VanWinkle was honored as Miss Congeniality and Sandra Swain, of Chi Omega, won both the swimsuit and talent competition to become Miss (J of E. bpring There was more to Spring Week than Audubon Day. Activities ran through- out the week and included May Honors, the Gymkahana race and a barn party which was held in the Indian. And the good times rolled on. A 50 Little ' 39 Little ' 39-the girl ' s chance to prove they are just as good as the guys. Hughes Hall won the 1 st place trophy in the annual event with Moore Hall and Chi Omega coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Big ' 39 Race The Big 39 Bike Race culminated Spring Week activities with the TKE fraternity walking away with 1st place for the second year in a row. Riders for the TKE ' s victorious team were Gene Scott, Gene Deubel, Mark Durnil and Steve Thomas. Sigma Phi Epsilon came in second while the Lambda Chi Alpha team settled for third place. 52 53 Commencement - a time when the period of extended adoles- cense comes to an end, when the student must abandon his carefree world and enter into the world as an adult. June 9 was the end of one life and the beginning of a new one for nearly 900 students who received their hard earned degrees. Pres. Under the direction of John David Lutz, U. E. performers portrayed a raft of fops, swains, and lovers. The play centers around the romance between Rosalind (Liz Wagner) and Orlando (Dan Agan). The banished Rosalind disguised as the male Ganymede, meets a fleeing Orlando in the forest, where Orlando confesses his love for Rosalind. Throughout the play pass many amusing characters. Dave Westfall played the tumbling clown Touchstone and Rebecca Guy was the robust wench Audrey. This play traveled to regional competition in Fort Wayne for the American Theatre Festival and also toured to Indianapolis and Hammond high schools. Ortmeyer Phebe Pat Smith Duke Senior Mark Miller William Hera Marsha Morris The Hostage The absurd was brought to the stage of Shanklin Theatre when in early February the drama department presented Brendan Behan ' s play The Hostage. The play was set in a disreputable Dublin boarding house and Bill Goulet opened the play with an introduction written by Dr. Dudley Thomas. The play itself dealt with a Cockney soldier taken prisoner by the IRA in a repri- sal for one of their own members held for ex- ecution by the British. The play was full of lusty song and dance and colorful characters drawn from Dublin ' s low life. The characters included Kathy Baker as the innocent girl amid the tainted women in the brothal, Bob Wagner as the bragging owner of the house, Bill Goulet as the hostage, and Dave Westfall was quite dainty and very amusing in his role as Princess Grace. This contemporary play, written by Lan- ford Wilson and directed by John David Lutz, presents sixteen people in the dying toen of Eldritch who focus their evil on one person, Skelly Manor, not seeing the evil in themselves. The play itself was contructed as if it were a huge jigsaw puzzle, where the pieces were revealed and rearranged as the play progressed. The structure of the play was emphasized by the use of lighting and stop action of the characters, who appeared on the stage simultaniously . The set, too, was extremely versatile as it was used to represent several locations within the town. Jeri Gibson played the 14 year old crippled girl whose curiosity about her young friend Robert (David Kelt) became entangled in the lives of the other townspeople. Jeff Richards was very convincing in his role of the old man Skelly Manor. 64 a a L Eva Jackson Josh Johnson Skelly Manor Peck Johnson Mavis Johnson Patsey Johnson Evelyn Jackson Lena Truit Cheri Campbell Kim Ross Richard Smith Chris Harmon Laurie Butsch Dave Kell Pat Smith Sherry Evans Bill Goulet Jeri Gibson Dan Agan Jeff Richards D.E. The Beaux Strategem Director Douglas Hubbell chose The Beaux Strategem, a play by George Farquhar and written in 1707, as the year ' s final major production in Shanklin Theatre. Although the play was written in the early 13th century, the U.E. drama department decided to move the play setting to the Napoleanic order. Also, even though the plot of the play deals with the universal subject of love and marriage and the ethics of divorce, the Cat and mouse strategies between the sexes are timely for any generation. Jeff Stackhouse and Dave Westfall were cast as robbers playing the roles of a rich romantic and his servant, while Chris Harmon as Dorinda and Rhona Justice as RMs Sullen, plotted to win the hearts of the males in an entertaining plot. Also, Dave Kell portrayed a much applaud- ed Count Bel lair . 66 CAST LIST Cherry Boniface Aimwell Archer Dorinda Mrs. Sullen Sul len Scrub Gibbet Rebecca Guy Richard Smith Jeff Stack ho use David Westfall Chris Harman Rhona Justice D.E. One Acts Students taking the drama department ' s directing class soon discover that their biggest project is to direct a one act play. The play is of the student ' s choosing and casting is usually within the department. The first one act shown here is The in- terview and was directed by Shannon Chastain. The play was a comment on the mechanization of society, stereotyping, and the impersonal attitudes of people. The second one act was Home Free and was directed by Rebecca Guy. The one acts are a small but interesting part of the drama department and are well worth the time to see as they provide an in- sight to what students can accomplish off stage. Behind The Scenes of the Drama Dept. U.E. ' S drama department is something unique. They have formed their own exclusive clan, but they can get by with their small clique because they are celebrities. The students know the actors and come to see the plays because the performances are good. Unfortunately though, all most students see tn what goes on on stage a few nights of the year. There is much more to each performance, however, than just the production nights and more people than just the actors are involved. The year ' s list of plays are chosen in the fall and then the plays are adapted so that they will best be understood by local audiences. After the plays are chosen, the real work begins. Drama Students Everywhere At Once Shanklin is filled with unseen but impor- tant parts of the plays. Backstage is the shop where students work to build the sets for each play. Upstairs one can find an assort- ment of costumes for all eras and here students often work late hours making all clothing and shoes for each production. Students are also in charge of the upstairs lighting booth. Downstairs are found the dressing rooms where students learn to apply cosmetics that can transform them from a 24 year old girl to a 70 year old man. Also downstairs is the experimental theatre where students and faculty spend many hours to make each play such an experience. The U .E. drama department deserves recognition for all its work in bringing such a claimed entertain- ment to the U . E . campus . Ceramics student Bill Carlson using the pottery wheel to make a bowl (ABOVE). Kim Brown watches closely to keep the paint within the lines (LEFT), Mary Giesting learning to work with acrylic paints ( RIGH T). Art Department The U .E . has a well structured art de- partment, but for all its work and fine showings, it is often unrecognized. Art students can be found at work across the campus. In the center of campus is a building which houses the ceramic equipment and part of the ROTC detachment has been converted into a room for sculpting. Not far away is the shop where students work welding metal together for metal sculptures and fashioning jewelry. In Krannart, the top floor is stacked with paintings of all types. Aside from these classes students can enroll in drawing, design, art appreciation, graphics, or water color classes . Works of art are always on display in the Krannart foyer and this year students saw huge wood and metal sculptures erected on campus lawns. Music Department Another active department on campus is the music department. The Department offers classes in band, orchestra, and all types of ensembles, conducting, arranging, and music appreciation. Music students devote hours of practice to their favorite instruments, always working for individual achievement. Many music majors must also find time for activities outside of classes such as accompanying voice students and playing for the Evansville Philharmonic. Aside from classes, the department offers extra activities for the benefit of all U .E. students. This year in the fall, music ensembles presented small one-half hour concerts outside Krannart. All year long fine entertainment can be heard in Wheeler Hall, as senior musicians and instructors present recitals. This year there were also a few unusual concerts—one given by music instructors and another presented at midnight. Carol Dillinger during a con- cert in Hyde Hall (TOP LEFT) Joe Lipton, Viola Instructor (LEFT). Marcie Kendall play- ing the cello during orchestra (ABOVE). Laurence Shapiro Directing the orchestra. Hansel Gretel Each year the University of Evansville presents two Lyric Theatre Productions as a part of classwork for music students. In November the class presented Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck as their first production. Casting and rehearsals began early in the school year and roles were open to students, faculty, and members of the Evansville community. The play was ac- companied by two pianists, who undertook the task of transposing the music from an orchestra score to piano parts. The play was presented at the Alhombre Theatre for two weekends and was given as matinees at Evansville schools and also toured to Washington, Indiana. Ww.M Jacques Brel Is Alive Well Living In Paris The last show to be seen on Shanklin ' s stage this year was Jaques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris. This production presented a change from the normal dramatic fare of the drama department as JBIAAWALIP is not a play but rather a musical review of Jacques Brel ' s music. The show itself consisted of twenty-five songs adapted by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman and the cast was made up of four experienced U.E. drama majors who helped create the sim- ple and sincere mood of Brel ' s music. The show was the first summer production given to raise money for scholarships for drama students . CAST LIST Kathy Baker Liz Wagner McFadzean Michael Fairman David Westfall Harlaxton Manor 84-85 New Courses 86-87 A Single Candle 88-89 Students Travel 90-91 Adventures 92-93 Harlaxton Manor For the third straight year Har- laxton Manor provided students an opportunity to study and live in England. Drawn to the manor from all parts of the states and for a variety of reasons, students con- verged on the manor in the fall and soon made this castle their home. Anglo-American relations were stressed through contacts at the pubs, invitations to homes for tea, and through the weekly lecture series where prominent speakers and musicians entertained at the manor. Shown working in the English hospital is Sue Sparks with an English nurse and patient (LEFT). Studies at the manor were as important as the fun. Shown here is Virginia Young (ABOVE). 85 New Courses This year nursing and archae- ology were added to the cirriculum. The Harlaxton nursing program was the first experiment of its kind in the U. S. Nursing students worked with the local nursing staff and learned the differences between the American and English health systems. The archaeology class allowed for students to help uncover an ancient Roman site near the manor. 87 Better to light a single candle The energy crises was quite a reality at the manor. Candles re- placed hallway lights, as both lights and heat were turned off at night. Students often went to early classes wrapped in blankets, but as one student said, You really didn ' t feel (the crises) that much because the whole atmosphere of the manor helped you adjust to it. Students were provided the opportunity to travel almost every weekend. Some of the fields trips included Edinbourgh, Wales,Stratford-on-Avon, London, York, Hadrian ' s Wall, Greece, and Russia. The trips were structured as far as traveling was concerned, but students were on their own once the bus stopped. Not to be excluded were the many planned excursions across the continent during the five week Ch istmas break. Harlaxton Manor viewed from the side yard (ABOVE). Early in the year students participated in a BBC production Follow the Eagles, in which parts of the manor were changed into a 19th century German home. At Christmas students pre- sented a play, The Real Inspector Hound, directed by John Stephens. Enthusiastic students met the challenge of a year abroad and experienced many new adventures to be long remembered .
